Notes: Summary The pharmacokinetics of the H2-receptor antagonist famotidine, after oral administration of a 20 mg tablet, has been studied in 10 elderly patients with normal renal function (CLCR≧59 ml·min−1, Mean=80 ml·min−1), 5 elderly patients with renal insufficiency (CLCR≦38 ml·min−1, Mean=15 ml·min−1), and 6 healthy young volunteers. Elimination half-life in the elderly patients with renal insufficiency was significantly prolonged compared to the elderly patients with normal renal function and the young volunteers. The correlation coefficient between creatinine clearance and the elimination rate constant of famotidine was 0.672. Mean urinary recovery of unchanged drug up to 24 h in the young volunteers was 44%. The mean renal clearance of famotidine in the young volunteers (270 ml·min−1) was substantially greater than the creatinine clearance, 128 ml·min−1, which suggests the possibility of tubular secretion of famotidine.

Notes: 〈list xml:id="l1" style="custom"〉1The age-related changes in mean arterial pressure (MAP), heart rate (HR), and baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) were studied in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats from 4 to 20 weeks of age.2Intra-arterial blood pressure (BP) was continuously recorded for 24 h in conscious, freely moving rats. Twenty-four hour MAP and HR were calculated by an online computer. Baroreflex sensitivity was measured by phenylephrine infusion.3In SHR, BRS was significantly lower than in WKY as early as 4-5 weeks, at which time MAP in SHR was only slightly raised. During subsequent weeks, rapid increase in MAP occurred in SHR, in association with progressive bradycardia.4It was concluded that a reduced BRS may be detected in young prehypertensive SHR and this impairment of BRS may be central in origin.

Notes: Abstract A multiple-output logic element using an optical interference system is proposed. The system acts as a logic gate array operating in parallel at certain positions divided over one period of the output fringe. A photoinduced refractive-index change material is incorporated in the system to perform the optical transformation of optical inputs into the phase change of a readout beam. It is shown that the logic gates obtained can be controlled arbitrarily in number and sorts by adjusting either the shift or the division of the output fringe. As an example, logic gates of AND, OR, NAND, NOR are implemented in parallel in the preliminary experiments.

Notes: Abstract Retardation of the fatigue crack growth after overloading was investigated in conjunction with the craze deformation at the fatigue crack tip in polymethylmethacrylate. The craze deformation was measured by optical interference and analysed numerically with reference to a previously proposed craze model. In the base line loading, the craze stress concentrates at the crack tip with the applied load and, hence, the non-uniform stress distribution is attained at the maximum load. The overload alters this stress distribution. Just after overloading, the crack tip stress does not reach the previous level, even at the same maximum load. The reduced crack tip stress correlates well with the retarded duration after the overload. It is concluded, therefore, that the craze stress reduction at the crack tip is the cause of crack growth retardation.

Notes: Abstract Continuous measurements of the craze contour have been undertaken for fatigue crack propagation in polymethylmethacrylate. The craze contour was determined by an interference fringe method, using equipment specially constructed for continuous load cycling, mounted on the stage of an optical microscope. It was found that there was a very great variation in the size of the craze for a fixed loading programme, although the crack growth rate showed a good correlation with the applied stress intensity range. A general result is that the craze length in fatigue was found to be greater than that for continuous crack propagation under simple fracture. This result suggested that it would be instructive to examine an extension of the Dugdale line-zone model, where the craze stress is not assumed to be constant along the length of the craze. It is shown that this modified line-zone model can provide some understanding of the observed results for craze deformation in fatigue.
