    Notes: The atmospheric environmental exposure system for synchrotron radiation (SR) lithography has been integrated using the Photon Factory storage ring (2.5 GeV). The system, composed of a highly reliable beamline, an SR extracting chamber and a prototype SR stepper, aims at attaining higher accuracy and throughput. Based on a fail-safe mechanism notion, a double-vacuum protection system, in which two sets of a fast closing valve and acoustic delay line are installed in the main beamline and branch beamline, respectively, has been organized. Vacuum breakdown tests indicated that any vacuum breakdown, a beryllium (Be) window rupture in the worst case, exerts little influence on the storage ring ultrahigh vacuum. The SR extracting chamber, equipped with a Be window and an extraction window, is filled with helium at atmospheric pressure. Particularly, the 50-μm-thick, 35-mm-diam Be window, vacuum-sealed by a Viton O-ring, was preliminarily employed and, so far, has operated successfully, giving a 25-mm square exposure area. In terms of practical availability and simplicity, the SR stepper in an atmospheric environment has been constructed. A novel differential mode linear Fresnel zone plate alignment method, which can detect an alignment error between a mask and a wafer during exposure, was developed.

    Notes: Abstract Grass puffer Fugu niphobles, captured in November 1986 at Shimoda, Japan, and then reared at different temperatures ranging from 10 to 29°C, was examined for microflora changes in the skin, gill and intestines. At 10°C, the skin and gill were colonized mainly by Pseudomonas, Flavobacterium and Moraxella, while at 29°C Vibrio and Flavobacterium appeared abundantly. The intestinal microflora, consisting of Vibrio, Pseudomonas and Flavobacterium, revealed little temperature dependence, although the intrageneric composition of Vibrio changed conspicuously depending on the change of water temperature. Vibrio group 1, tentatively identified as V. alginolyticus, was detected in all tissues examined at 20 and 29°C. This, along with the fact that V. alginolyticus produces tetrodotoxin, suggests that the tetrodotoxin contained in puffer is, at least partly, accounted for by this bacterial species inhabiting intestines.

    Notes: Summary Fine structural and immunocytochemical characterization of rabbit lymphoid cell lines transformed by human T-lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) was carried out. All nine cell lines tested were reactive with anti-HTLV-I-positive human, monkey, and rabbit sera and monoclonal antibody to HTLV-Ip 19, but not with anti-HTLV-I-negative sera and monoclonal antibodies to human Ia and pan-T antigens. All cell lines were strongly positive for monoclonal antibodies to rabbit Ia and pan-T antigens. Ultrastructurally, each cell line contained C-type virus particles in varying numbers in the extracellular space. These particles showed replication patterns similar to those in HTLV-I or simian T-lymphotropic virus type I (STLV-I)-producing human or monkey cells. In addition, anti-HTLV-I-positive rabbit serum gave positive immunoreactivity to HTLV-I or STLV-I by indirect immunoferritin method. These results indicate that the ultramorphology and replication patterns of HTLV-I in rabbit cell lines are indistinguishable from those of HTLV-I in human and monkey cell lines, HTLV-I in rabbit cells shares the common surface antigenic determinants with HTLV-I or STLV-I in human or monkey cells, and that these cells are definitely rabbit T cells bearing their own Ia antigens.
