    Notes: Summary Motilin was demonstrated by the immunoperoxidase technique in endocrine cells of the gastrointestinal tract using several specific antisera. Motilin-like immunoreactivity could only be demonstrated with one of these antisera and was observed in Purkinje cells and dendrites of the cerebellum, in pyramidal cells and dendrites of the cerebral cortex and in dendrites of the CA3 field of the hippocampus of the rat. Very low motilin-like immunoreactivity was found in cerebellum as well as in cerebral cortex using radioimmunoassay. However, using reverse phase liquid chromatography combined with UV-detection and radioimmunoassay, no peak of a peptide corresponding to synthetic motilin was detectable in rat cerebellar extracts, in contrast to findings in rat duodenum. The results do not suggest that motilin is an intrinsic neuroactive substance of the cerebellum.

    Notes: Summary A novel peptide hormone, atrial natriuretic factor/cardiodilatin (ANP/CDD), was recently isolated and characterized from mammalian heart. Its presence has been demonstrated in several organs that contribute to water and sodium homeostasis, such as salivary glands. This study demonstrates the presence of ANP/CDD immunoreactivity in the salt gland of Pekin ducks by high performance liquid chromatography, radioimmunoassay and immunocytochemistry, using a specific antibody against atriopeptide I. A small number of distinct, ovoid or cuboid shaped ANP/CDD-immunoreactive cells were localized in the connective tissue surrounding and separating the central secretory tubules, whereas no immunostaining was observed in the peripheral tubules. Salt glands of ducks that were adapted to salt water revealed a significant hypertrophy of their secretory lobules. However, no differences were found between the number or localization of immunoreactive cells in the salt gland of salt water-acclimatized ducks and non-stimulated glands of ducks that were housed with ad libitum access to fresh water. Our results indicate that ANP/CDD may play a role in the regulation of sodium secretion in the salt gland of aquatic birds.

    Notes: Summary In the oligodendrocytes of cerebellum and spinal cord and in the Schwann cells of peripheral nerves of cat, albino mouse, and Japanese waltzing mouse lipopigment bodies of different size and shape are deposited, which exhibit a characteristic internal structure. The following three subtypes can be distinguished: (1) Granules completely surrounded by a membrane and containing regularly speced lamellae, (2) granules consisting of a granular matrix with elucidations, and (3) granules with bifurcating stacks of lamellae. Thus, their structure is distinct from that found in nerve cells and other glial cells and allows the diagnosis of oligodendrocyte or Schwann cell. The significance of these granules in relation to function and aging is briefly discussed.

    Notes: We have measured minority-carrier lifetimes of up to 4.9 μs in GaAs layers that have been grown by low-pressure organometallic vapor phase epitaxy. These lifetimes, representing a major improvement compared with previously obtained results, are governed by radiative recombination processes. Carbon incorporation during crystal growth at low arsine partial pressures is of prime importance in understanding the origin of these very long lifetimes.

    Notes: Accessions of Beta macrocarpa Guss., collected on the Canary Islands, were tetraploid (2n = 36). Three of these accessions were studied in detail. The plants were rather uniform in their morphological appearance, both within and between accessions, and were annual and fully self-compatible. Meiosis was completely diploidised, suggesting an alloploid nature of the tetraploid species. Crosses with diploid B. vulgaris yielded triploid hybrids which were sterile or nearly so; a few descendants of such hybrids were highly aneuploid. Crosses between tetraploid B. macrocarpa and autotetraploid cytotypes of B. vulgaris showed variable results, only part of these crosses yielded tetraploid hybrids. The tetraploid hybrids exhibited somewhat higher fertility than the triploids. An F2 generation showed partial hybrid dwarfness, partial fertility and segregation for carliness and coloration of the hypocotyl. All hybrids had multivalents at meiosis (averages: 2.5—5.4 multivalents per pollen mother cell), indicating suppression of the diploidised meiosis. The possibilities of application of the diploidised meiosis in breeding sugar beet are discussed.

    Notes: Summary Trophoblastic cells with their strictly controlled propensity for invasive growth hereby bear limited resemblance to malignant cells. Therefore, detailed description of molecular characteristics of this cell type in comparison to histologically related tumor cells may aid in defining physiologically relevant differences. In view of the potential importance of selective protein-carbohydrate interactions in recognitive processes, labelled neoglycoproteins were employed to evaluate systematically the presence and distribution of sugar receptors in tumor cells of chorionepithelioma and in trophoblastic cells of an early stage of gestation. Control reactions in glycohistochemistry, involving prolonged incubation, pH variation and use of nucleotides excluded the possiblity that glycosidases or glycosyltransferases grovern the sugar-specific binding to the tissue sections. Pronounced differences were detected in the expression of receptors (lectins) for α- and β-glucosides as well as for N-acetylgalactosamine and N-acetylglucosamine. Further differences were revealed by probing both types of tissue with lactosylated, fucosylated, xylosylated and sialylated carrier protein. Upon developmental maturation of the normal cells in placenta the extent of binding of the neoglyco-proteins decreased. The glycohistochemical differences between malignant and normally developing trophoblastic cells were found to be reflected in the alteration of expression of certain endogenous lectins, as ascertained by affinity chromatography and gel electrophoretic analysis. Consequently, we assume that the transient presence of certain endogenous lectins during early stages of gestation and their differential expression in relation to tumor cells of chorionepithelioma may be relevant for the special invasive and adhesive behavior of human trophoblastic cells.
