    Notes: Abstract A rapid method for determining traces of radiostrontium in milk and drinking water is described. The technique involves a batch treatment of the milk sample with a cation exchanger (DOWEX 50W X8) followed by a solvent extraction with a crown ether (DC18C6) and a precipitation of SrCO3. In the case of water, the strontium is extracted directly with the crown ether. The average separation yield is 74% for milk and 91% for water. The overall separation procedure takes about 8 hours. Activities as low as 0.03 Bq/1 can be determined with a low background GM-counter.

    Notes: Abstract 9Be induced radioactivation was used to study the trace determination of 19 elements at 3 different ion beam energies (Elab=14, 32 and 63 MeV9Be2+). Nine nuclear reactions, yielding radionuclides with half-lives longer than 2.5 m, present potential analytical features. Beside the very sensitive detection of B and N, the multielemental determination of Na, Si, Ca, Sc, and Zn is possible with a9Be ion beam of appropriate incident energy. Nuclear interferences have also been investigated and quantified.

    Notes: Abstract The influence of matrix physical state on the95mTc decay in M2 99(95m)TcX6 has been studied. In the solid, the95gTc retention was constant (83%) independently of the matrix amount up to a limiting value of the95mTcF 6 2− /K2 99TcF6 ratio. Then the decrease of matrix amount led to a decrease of the95gTc retention to 34%. This value remained constant upon further decrease of the matrix. In frozen solutions, the95gTc retention was found to be 18–20% independently of the type of compounds and their concentrations up to 10−2 M. In the same range of salt concentrations, the retention in solution was found to be 3%. The increase of salt concentration to 2·10−2 M led to an increase of retention in frozen solutions but did not affect its value in solution.

    Notes: Abstract The photochemical aquation of K2 TcBr6 in 2M HRr, 1M HClO4 and 1M H2SO4 has been studied. The absorption spectra of the various Tc(IV) species were measured after the electrophoretic separation. The spectrophotometric changes and the yield of each species as a function of the UV irradiation time were determined. After 25 hours of irradiation of HBr and HClO4 solutions the main species were the cationic ones (∼80%) but in H2SO4 solution the neutral species reached a yield of 90%. The oxidation of Tc(IV) species to TcO 4 − proceeded more rapidly and extensively in HClO4 than in HBr and H2SO4.

    Notes: Abstract 11B induced radioactivation was used to study the trace determination of light elements with 1≤Z≤17. 49 nuclear reactions were investigated with ion beam energies ranging from Elab=10 MeV to Elab=27 MeV. Five elements were found to be determinable nondestructively, selectively and sensitively: Li, Be, B, Mg and Si. Nuclear interferences have also been defined and quantified. The technique has been applied to simultaneous Li-B trace determinations in glass samples and to Mg determination in Al2O3 ceramic material.

    Notes: Summary The capacity of immunoglobulin for intravenous application (IgG-IV) to interact with Fc receptors of human monocytes and macrophages was tested by quantifying the inhibition of phagocytosis of IgG-sensitized erythrocytes. To this end a spectrometric phagocytosis test has been used. When compared with IgG for i.m. use (IgG-IM), all IgG-IV had reduced activity. This reduction was related, in part, to the reduced amount of IgG dimers and polymers in IgG-IV. On a weight basis dimeric IgG and polymeric IgG exerted 6-fold and 14-fold higher activity, respectively, than monomeric IgG. When this difference was corrected for, chemically modified IgG-IV still had significantly reduced inhibitory activity; DEAE-Sephadex-treated IgG and acid-treated IgG had an activity similar to IgG-IM, and PEG-treated IgG showed a slightly reduced activity. Pepsin-treated IgG was 〉100-fold less active than IgG-IM. The reactivity of IgG-IV with monocyte and macrophage Fc receptors was closely correlated. The most conspicuous differences found were related to the concentration at which IgG was used. Thus, β-propiolactone-treated IgG and plasmin-treated IgG were found to have significantly reduced activity at concentrations 〉20 μg/ml, but almost normal activity when used at lower concentrations.

    Notes: Abstract The reduction of99mTc by SnCl2 in the presence of 1,7-bis (2-pyridyl)-2,6-diazaheptane (DPTN) has been investigated in borate buffer solutions with pHs ranging from 6.7 to 9.5. The resulting cationic, neutral and anionic complexes, in addition to TcO2 and TcO 4 − impurities, were separated by high voltage paper electrophoresis. The cationic complex turned into neutral and then into an anionic form via hydrolysis. These three species were also separated by gel filtration on a Bio-Gel P-2 column; their formation yields, stability, and the rate of their hydrolysis are presented as a function of the pH, and the results are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract The aquation of TcBr 6 2− in perchlorate solutions at various hydrogen ion concentrations and ionic strengths has been investigated. Although the same products form in all cases the proportions of the cationic and neutral products depend on the [H+] and the ionic strength. Differences in LiClO4/HClO4 and NaClO4/HClO4 can be attributed to differences in the activities, although at constant ionic strength. A rate constant of 1.75·10−5 s−1 was found for the aquation at μ=1, together with an activation energy of 101.6±12.5 kJ/mol.

    Notes: Abstract A novel procedure for measuring the concentrations of lithium and beryllium in different inorganic and biological samples has been studied using18O heavy-ion activation analysis. The specific reactions,7Li(18O,αn)2cF and9Be(180,2α)19O, are sensitive and selective if the bombardment energy is 25-MeV18O4+. The detection limits for non-destructive analyses are 10 ng Li and 2 ng Be for a 100-second cyclic irradiation. The technique has been tested by analyzing NBS reference materials. It can be applied to a large range of solid samples.
