    Notes: Summary In the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) of paralyzed cats under urethane anaesthesia, an extensive disinhibitory region (DIR) outside the inhibitory surround of the receptive field (RF) was found in both sustained and transient cells. Its extent is comparable to that of McIlwain's periphery effect (1964). The responses to a light spot, flashed into different parts of the RF center, were used to assess the effect of different background patterns, located over the DIR, on responsiveness and receptive field organization. A straight line background cutting across the RF center led to a marked shrinkage in RF size and to a suppression of the center response. In sustained cells, these influences were not due to the light flux of the background, but were mainly due to the spatial property of the line itself. This was demonstrated by comparing the effect of a straight line background with that of a zigzag line or of distributed dots. The light flux for the different patterns and their spatial weighting was the same, so that they differed from each other solely in their form. A straight line background elicited much stronger suppression of the center response and more marked shrinkage of the RF than if the component dots are dispersed over a wider area, but keeping the radial distances of the individual dots from the RF-center constant. The data suggest that the dispersion of the component dots in different backgrounds plays an important role as response amplitude and RF diameter increase proportional to the dispersive area of the background patterns. For transient cells, all backgrounds used showed similar effects on center responses and RF diameter, indicating that for them it was the light flux of the backgrounds rather than their spatial property that caused the effects.

    Notes: Summary Recently, special attention has been given in the literature, to the problems of accurately computing the least-squares solution of very largescale over-determined systems of linear equations which occur in geodetic applications. In particular, it has been suggested that one can solve such problems iteratively by applying the block SOR (Successive Overrelaxation) and EGS1 (Extrapolated Gauss Seidel 1) plus semi-iterative methods to a linear system with coefficient matrix 2-cyclic or 3-cyclic. The comparison of 2-block SOR and 3-block SOR was made in [1] and showed that the 2-block SOR is better. In [6], the authors also proved that 3-block EGS1-SI is better than 3-block SOR. Here, we first show that the 2-block DJ (Double Jacobi)-SI, GS-SI and EGS1-SI methods are equivalent and all of them are equivalent to the 3-block EGS1-SI method; then, we prove that the composite methods and 2-block SOR have the same asymptotic rate of convergence, but the former has a better average rate of convergence; finally, numerical experiments are reported, and confirm that the 3-block EGS1-SI is better than the 2-block SOR.

    Notes: YBaCuO superconducting thin films were prepared by multilayer deposition on different kinds of substrates. High Tc with an onset of 94 K and a zero resistance at 84 K has been obtained by deposition on pure ZrO2 substrates. The nature of zero resistance as well as the dR/dT characteristic above Tc and the influence of substrates are discussed.

The present study was carried out to determine whether rilmenidine, a recently introduced antihypertensive agent which acts on α2-adrenoceptors, has partial agonist activity on prejunctional α2-adrenoceptors in guinea-pig atria.2. Isolated preparations of guinea-pig atria were incubated with [3H]-noradrenaline and the efflux of radioactivity induced by stimulation of intramural sympathetic nerves was used as an index of release of transmitter noradrenaline.3. Rilmenidine (1 μmol/1) inhibited noradrenaline release evoked by short trains (five, 20 and 50 pulses) of sympathetic nerve stimulation and this inhibitory effect of rilmenidine was antagonized by the α2-adrenoceptor antagonists, idazoxan (0.1 and 0.3 umol/1) and rauwolscine (0.3 umol/1) whereas it was not affected by the α1-adrenoceptor antagonist prazosin (0.1 μmol/1).4. On the other hand, rilmenidine (1 μmol/1) enhanced noradrenaline release evoked by long trains (150 and 300 pulses) of stimulation and this effect was also abolished by idazoxan (0.1 μmol/1).5. These findings suggest that the effects of rilmenidine on transmitter release depend on the degree of auto-inhibition: when the concentration of noradrenaline in the biophase of the prejunctional α2-adrenoceptors is low, rilmenidine acts as an agonist, but when the concentration is high it acts as an antagonist. Thus, rilmenidine, like clonidine, is a partial agonist on prejunctional α2-adrenoceptors in guinea-pig atria.

The nitric oxide (NO) synthesis inhibitor NG-monomethyl-l-arginine (l-NMMA), but not d-NMMA, inhibited the NANC-mediated relaxations of the rat anococcygeus muscle, but did not affect the relaxation produced by sodium nitroprusside.2. The inhibitory effect of l-NMMA was reversed by l-arginine but not by d-arginine, and prior exposure to l-arginine blocked the effect of l-NMMA.3. The noradrenergically mediated contractions of the anococcygeus elicited by field stimulation were slightly enhanced by l-NMMA, but the response to noradrenaline was not affected.4. The results suggest that NANC transmission in the rat anococcygeus muscle involves the generation of NO from arginine.

    Notes: Al films deposited on Pt layers developed voids after annealing between 200 and 300 °C. Void formation in the Al was also observed when the Pt layer was deposited above the Al film. The amount of Al surrounding the voids increased as the voids grew. The void growth seems to saturate when all the Pt is consumed to form Pt2Al3, and the rate of void growth decreases as the thickness of the initial Al film increases. We believe the controlling mechanism is diffusion along the Al/Pt interface made possible by compound formation there.

    Notes: Abstract The feasibility of a new mechanical testing technique is described. This technique allows the collection of load-relaxation type data at higher strain rates than is possible in a conventional load-relaxation test. This technique was used on commercial purity aluminium and 304 stainless steel at strain rates up to 5 sec−1. Good agreement with Hart's state variable model for plastic deformation was found.
