    Notes: We have fabricated superconducting thin films on MgO(100) substrates with nearly pure Tl2Ba2Ca2Cu3O10 (2:2:2:3) phase using pulsed laser evaporation and post-annealing. The films had c axes perpendicular to the substrates. Superconducting films with onset temperatures of 125 K and zero resistance at 110 K were obtained. X-ray microprobe fluorescence measurements indicate that a typical composition of films is Tl0.66Ba1.77Ca1.46Cu3Ox, which is low in Tl compared to that expected for the 2:2:2:3 phase. A typical grain size is greater than 10 μm as revealed by scanning electron microscopy.

    Notes: We compare the superlattice modulation, microstructure, and epitaxy of Tl2Ba2Ca2Cu3O10 thin films grown on MgO [100] and SrTiO3 [100] substrates by dc diode sputtering. Films grown on MgO were found to be quite clean with the c axis perpendicular to the substrate. However, no in-plane orientational relationship to the substrate was found. Films grown on SrTiO3, on the other hand, showed very good epitaxy to the substrate despite the presence of second phases. Films grown on MgO also exhibited a longer coherence length of the superlattice modulation than those grown on SrTiO3 under identical conditions.

    Notes: Tl-Ba-Ca-Cu-O superconducting thin films with zero-resistance temperatures up to 115 K have been prepared using a Tl2 O3 vapor process on Ba-Ca-Cu-O precursor thin films. The Ba-Ca-Cu-O thin films were made by laser deposition on Y-stabilized ZrO2 substrates. This technique minimizes problems caused by the toxicity of Tl2 O3, and its subsequent decomposition to the volatile and toxic Tl2 O upon heating. Therefore, it may have practical application in the fabrication of high Tc Tl-Ba-Ca-Cu-O superconducting thin-film devices.

    Notes: High-density recording media require materials with a high magnetization and high coercivity as well as chemical stability, wear, and corrosion resistance. We explore the potential of granular metal films for recording media. Films of Fe granules about 150 A(ring) in size embedded in an amorphous SiO2 matrix exhibit coercivities as high as 3 kOe at low temperatures and 1.1 kOe at room temperature, and magnetizations of about 150 emu/g. The methods with which these materials are fabricated, the essential microstructure characterization, and magnetic measurements are described.

    Notes: Alloys of FexHf100−x (20≤x≤100) were fabricated by a vapor-quench method. The amorphous state, as verified by x-ray diffraction, is realized over a wide composition range of 20≤x≤94. The magnetic phase diagram was determined. The variation with Fe content of the magnetic ordering temperature (Tc) in Fe-Hf amorphous alloys shows a maximum at xp(approximately-equal-to)87. In contrast, the effective magnetic hyperfine field and therefore the Fe moment increases monotonically with x. Amorphous pure Fe is likely to be magnetic (Tc ∼200 K) with a large magnetic moment. At higher Fe concentrations (x〉95), the samples are crystalline alloys and strongly ferromagnetic. These sharp changes of the magnetic properties are consequences of structural differences, a fact which has been observed in every Fe-early transition metal alloy system reported thus far. In general, the magnetic properties and hyperfine interactions of amorphous Fe-Hf alloys are very similar to those of amorphous Fe-Zr alloys.

    Notes: Fe57 Mössbauer spectra were taken from 300 K down to 4.2 K for two single-crystal samples of Y1.8Er0.2Fe14B, one cut with its [001] axis normal to the surface, the other with its diagonal of [100], [010], and [001] axes normal to the surface. The former sample has shown that the angle between the Fe spin and the [001] increases continuously below ∼90 K. This qualitatively agrees with the spin reorientation (i.e., the easy axis of magnetization rotates away from the [001] toward [100] on cooling below ∼90 K) which have already been observed by torque magnetometry. The latter sample has shown that the Fe spin actually rotates continuously; abrupt change of Fe spin direction, which have been already suggested to occur in Er2Fe14B, does not occur in Y1.8Er0.2Fe14B. The samples were so thick that the intensity of strong absorption lines were saturated. We have derived a formula with which the saturation effect can be corrected in order to determine the angle of the Fe spin direction correctly.

    Notes: Binary alloys of FexTa100−x were made by high-rate sputtering. A sharply defined boundary separates the composition ranges in which crystalline alloys (93≤x≤100) and amorphous alloys (15≤x≤90) are formed. The amorphous alloys with Fe concentrations up to the threshold of xc(approximately-equal-to)65 are nonmagnetic. For the samples with x〉xc, the magnetic ordering temperature (Tc) varies monotonically with Fe content to 200 K for a-Fe90Ta10. However, the crystalline alloys, with slightly higher Fe content, are strongly ferromagnetic. Their Tc's are several hundred degrees higher, accompanied by large increases in magnetic moment and hyperfine fields. This discontinuity illustrates the sensitivity with which the magnetic properties of Fe-transition metal alloys depend on structure. In contrast, no discontinuity has been observed in Co-Ta alloys.

    Notes: We have studied the consequence of structure on the magnetic properties of 304 stainless steel in two distinct crystalline states. Ordinary 304 stainless steel has an fcc structure and is nonmagnetic at room temperature. By using a vapor quenching method, we have fabricated single-phase metastable bcc 304 stainless steel which is strongly ferromagnetic. Films a few μm thick have been made by high-rate sputter deposition onto substrates at room temperature or liquid-nitrogen temperature. Vibrating sample magnetometry and 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy reveal that the bcc phase has a magnetization of 130 emu/g, due largely to the Fe moment. The Curie temperature is found to be excess of 550 °C. Upon subsequent annealing above 550 °C, the metastable bcc state transforms back into the usual nonmagnetic fcc phase. The changes in the magnetic properties and the structure of these films during the transformation are examined.

    Notes: Magnetic granular solids consist of ultrafine metal granules of nanometer sizes embedded in an insulating medium. The magnetic properties are dictated by the microstructure such as particle size, metal volume fraction, which are process controlled. We report the results of a series of granular Fe60(SiO2)40 films in which the particle size has been systematically varied. The magnetic coercivity, ranging from 500 to 2200 Oe, increases with particle size. The ferromagnetic-superparamagnetic transition had been studied by SQUID magnetometry and Mössbauer spectroscopy. The value of the magnetic anisotropy energy is found to be much larger than that due to magnetocrystalline anisotropy.

    Notes: Measurements of the transport critical-current density (Jc), magnetization Jc, and magnetoresistance in a number of bulk sintered samples of Y1Ba2Cu3Ox from several different laboratories indicate that the transport Jc is limited by weak-link regions between high Jc regions. The weak-link Jc has a Josephson character, decreasing by two orders of magnitude as the magnetic field is increased from 0.1 to 10 mT at 77 K. An examination of the grain-boundary region in Y1Ba2Cu3Ox shows no observable impurities or second phases to the scale of the [001] lattice planes (∼12 A(ring)). The effect of intrinsic conduction anisotropy is discussed. A current-transfer model is proposed in which weak conduction along the c axis plays a role in limiting Jc at grain boundaries. Orienting the grains in the powder state during processing may result in enhanced transport Jc in bulk conductors.
