Notes: Orientation of the complex Knipovich-Lena spreading/transform system closely follows the secondary shear and extensional orientations that existed within adjacent continental crust prior to rifting. Major dextral faults and shear zones within continental crust appear to have affected both the lower crust and upper mantle during extension and to have caused the localization of the early transform rift system.

Notes: The measurements of the polarization dependence of field-induced refractive index changes in GaAs/AlAs multiple quantum wells, which are directly measured by using the modulation spectroscopy method for the TE and TM modes, are described. Clear polarization dependences, such as differences in the spectra shape and the peak wavelength, were observed. The polarization dependences originate from the different excitonic transitions: the n=1 heavy-hole and light-hole exciton for the TE mode and the n=1 light-hole exciton for the TM mode. The experimental results show qualitatively good agreement with the theoretical calculation.

Notes: Abstract Samples of hair from 370 subjects were analysed by neutron activation. The samples were taken from residents of nine different countries: Japan, France, Ivory Coast, Brasil, Paraguay, Canary Islands, Papua New Guinea, Italy and New Zealand. The selenium determination was made using the76Se(n,γ)77mSe reaction. It was found that the average selenium concentration in the hair of Japanese subjects, both those living in Japan and those living in foreign countries was higher (total average: 0.59±0.14 mg/kg) than those of subjects from other countries (total average: 0.42±0.13 mg/kg). Our results from the determination of the selenium concentration in the hair of individuals from different countries show significant differences between different countries, nevertheless, the selenium content in human hair was small amounts. Since this is likely due to differences in diet. This method was able to analyze quickly for many samples.

Notes: Abstract Prostaglandin E1 was administered intravenously to 10 patients who had the adult respiratory distress syndrome associated with severe infection in order to investigate its hemodynamic effects. Infusion of PGE1 significantly decreased the mean pulmonary arterial pressure, mean systemic arterial pressure, pulmonary vascular resistance and systemic vascular resistance, and increased the cardiac index, oxygen delivery and oxygen consumption. No significant difference was noted in the intrapulmonary shunt fraction. These results indicate that administration of PGE1 improves pulmonary hemodynamics and tissue oxygenation in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome, by reducing right ventricular afterload and increasing the cardiac index.

Notes: Summary This study was aimed at elucidating the brainstem-spinal mechanisms of postural suppression evoked by stimulating the dorsal portion of the caudal tegmental field (DTP) in the pons. For this purpose, we first sampled a group of reticulospinal neurons located in the medial part of medullary reticular formation, which were activated ortho-dromically and antidromically by stimulating the DTF area and the first lumbar spinal segment, respectively (DTF-RS neurons; N = 26). These DTF-RS neurons were located within the nucleus reticularis gigantocellularis (NRGc) and projected their descending axons to the lumbar spinal cord through the ventrolateral funiculus. The postsynaptic inhibitory effects of single DTF-RS neurons upon hindlimb alpha-MNs intracellularly recorded (N = 78) were then studied with spike-triggered averaging. Twelve DTF-RS neurons evoked IPSPs in 21 hindlimb alpha-MNs. Five DTF-RS neurons exerted postsynaptic inhibitory effects upon more than one alpha-MNs. These alpha-MNs were located from L5 to S1 segments of the spinal cord. A mean latency of IPSPs which was measured from the onset of the trigger spike was 5.1 ms with time to peak of 1.8 ms, and the mean segmental delay of the IPSPs was 1.5 ms, which was measured from the onset of the descending axonal volley recorded extracellularly adjacent to alpha-MNs. Amplitudes of the IPSPs were augmented with an increase in the firing frequencies of the DTF-RS neurons, the increase being produced by iontophoretic application of glutamate. These characteristics of the IPSPs suggest that reticular effects are mediated at least by a single spinal inhibitory interneuron. These results suggest that the DTF-NRGc system participates in generalized motor inhibition.

Notes: Summary A new method for three-dimensional reconstruction of transmitter-identified neurons is presented which involves “en bloc” immunofluorescence histochemistry and confocal scanning microscopy. The technique was applied to different types of neurons in the rat brain and lamprey spinal cord. Thick sections or tissue “blocs” (50–200 μm thick) were incubated with antisera against neuropeptides or monoaminergic markers, followed by fluorescent secondary antibodies. Three-dimensional reconstructions were obtained by scanning the preparations in sequential focal planes with a thin laser beam, while sampling the emitted light in each focal plane. The method is convenient and can be applied to a wide variety of neuron types. The reconstructions obtained are accurate since the “optical serial sections” of the specimen are perfectly aligned, and optic disturbances such as “halo” phenomena do not occur.

Notes: Summary Sulfhydryl compounds such as reduced glutathione, cysteine and 2-mercaptopropionylglycine, a hepato-protective agent, activated Cu, Zn-superoxide dismutase purified from rat liver at low concentrations (below 10μM). Furthermore we found evidence indicating that this activation is achieved by reducing Cu2+ present in the catalytic site of the dismutase, and thereby promoting the dismutation of superoxide anions.

Notes: Summary Rats given a dose of carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) immediately received injections of glucagon and insulin every 4h. They frequently died after 4h and showed a significantly higher mortality between 8h and 28h as compared to the control rats where such deaths occurred 16h later. At 8h, the derangements of SGPT values and prothrombin time were significantly greater in the hormone-treated rats than in the control rats. In these CCl4-intoxicated rats, hepatic reduced glutathione content at 4h was significantly reduced after hormone treatment. The treatment significantly enhanced CCl4 metabolism, conversion of14CCl4 into14CO2 in vitro, by microsomes isolated from the liver, whereas it did not affect the microsomal cytochrome P450 content. These results suggest that glucagon and insulin treatment increased CCl4 hepatotoxicity in rats through activating the cytochrome P450-dependent mono-oxygenase system. This would merit consideration for the clinical application of this treatment.
