    Notes: Abstract We have carried our constant strain-rate compression tests on polycrystalline Cr2O3 and Cr2O3 doped with 0.09 wt. % Y2O3 to establish whether there exists an effect of Y2O3 on the plasticity of Cr2O3. This study is motivated by previous work on the oxidation of alloys containing reactive-element additions. In that work, it has been observed that the addition of oxygen-active elements, such as Y to alloys that form Cr2O3 or Al2O3 oxide layers upon exposure at high temperature, strongly enhances the adhesion of the oxide layer to the base alloy as compared with alloys without reactive-element additions. We have found that at 1200°C (1) chromia exhibits limited plasticity at high temperatures, and (2) the presence of Y in the oxides does not enhance plasticity compared with addition-free oxides.

    Notes: Summary The retention of 32 monocyclic aromatic compounds and 14 polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) has been studied on four different bonded phases in each of two mobile phases. An additional data set of 21 monocyclic aromatics judiciously chosen for their well-established solvatochromic parameters, 12 PAHs and 12 polychlorinated biphenyls (containing up to 10 chlorines), were studied on a single column. The results indicate that despite the accuracy of the solvatochromic linear solvation energy method for predicting and correlating the octanol/water partition coefficients and water solubilities of these environmentally important materials, the methodology is limited to only certain types of bonded phases. As a corollary to this observation, we caution others that the common practice of estimating log Kow (Kow=octanol-water partition coefficient) based on measurement of the reversed-phase capacity factors should be limited to specific types of columns.

    Notes: Abstract Scalar and vector mathematical identities involving an integral of singularities distributed over a surface and sometimes over a field can be employed to define field values of a quantity of interest. As the volume excluding the singular point from the field tends to zero, the field value is derived. The expressions that result become singular as the point of interest in the field approaches the boundary. Derivation of limiting integral expressions as the field point tends to the surface having a distribution of first and second degree singularities is the main task reported. The limiting expressions for vector values require evaluation as generalized Cauchy Principal-Value Integrals for which some aspect of symmetry in a local region excluding the singularity is required. A contribution from the integral over the local region doubles the value of the identities at a point on the boundary. For a doublet distribution, a singular term arises from the local-region integration that cancels a similar singularity in the integral over the remaining surface. This local contribution for doublets depends explicitly upon the shape of the local region as well as non-orthogonality of the surface coordinate axes. The resulting expressions for surface integrals reproduce known relations for line integrals in two-dimensional fields.
