Notes: We studied the sensitivity of a radiation detector based on metastable superconducting grains. Radiation is detected by the phase transition from the superconducting to the normal-conducting state of a grain induced by energy absorption. Metastable states of tin and cadmium grains were tested. The phase boundary of a large sample of grains was found to be broadened due to variations of the phase diagrams of single grains. Therefore, the use of superconductors with a low critical temperature Tc and an operation temperature close to Tc seems advisable to increase the sensitivity of the detector. For Cd grains a sensitivity normalized to the grain volume of 12 eV/μm3 was achieved for the detection of γ rays. These grains showed an instability in the superconducting to normal-conducting phase transition for temperatures below 350 mK.

Notes: Abstract Eighteen non-anxious volunteers underwent sleep recordings and daytime tests of sleepiness, performance, and mood while receiving, either alprazolam 0.5 mg b.i.d. or diazepam 5 mg b.i.d. for 7 consecutive days. Recordings and tests were done before treatment and on the 1st and 7th days of treatment. Nocturnal sleep changes were similar for both groups; there were no statistically significant changes in mood. However, levels of daytime sleepiness differed. Alprazolam subjects showed more daytime sedation than diazepam subjects on treatment day 1, but showed a significant decreased in Day 1–7 daytime sedation. Although diazepam subjects were less sedated at the onset, they showed no tolerance to this effect; thus by treatment day 7, the two groups did not differ in levels of daytime sleepiness. Results suggested that tolerance to alprazolam's sedative effects (which develops during the 1st week of treatment) may be separable from tolerance to its antianxiety effects (which develops after at least 4 weeks). As daytime sedation is common and potentially dangerous with most anxiolytics, selective tolerance to this side effect is highly desirable.

Notes: Abstract Twelve volunteers with a complaint of chronic insomnia participated in a placebo-controlled, doubleblind, crossover study of the effects of buspirone t.i.d. on sleep pattern and daytime function. The drug was tested alone and in combination with flurazepam or triazolam. Buspirone alone did not impair objective measures of daytime wakefulness or performance. Impaired alertness was seen the day after bedtime administration of flurazepam but not after triazolam; buspirone did not alter these effects. Buspirone did not affect the Multiple Sleep Latency Test, a sensitive measure of changes in daytime alertness.

Notes: Summary Electrophoretic mobility differences in polyacrylamide gels were detected between (35S)-methionine-labelled nucleoproteins (NPs) induced in monolayer cells by 15 human and 4 avian reference strains of influenza viruses. The (35S)-methionine-labelled tryptic peptides of nucleoproteins of these strains were also analyzed by peptide mapping technique. Based on several detectable hydrophilic peptides the NPs could be arranged in 7 clearly differentiable groups. After radioiodination of NPs from 4 human and 3 avian reference strains the tryptic peptide patterns showed one clear difference between human and avian strains.

Notes: Abstract Nuclear fission accompanied by long-range alpha particles has been investigated. Fission was induced by irradiating a natural uranium target with 13.5 MeV deuterons. The alpha energy and angular distributions are similar to those observed in spontaneous or thermal neutron induced fission. The correlation angle between alpha particles and light fission fragments has a most probable value of $$\bar \vartheta _{l f - \alpha } = 82.1^\circ \pm 0.9^\circ $$ and a dispersion (FWHM) of Δϑ=18.4°±1.2°. The mean value and dispersion of the energy distribution are $$\bar {\rm E}_\alpha = 14.8 \pm 1.0 MeV$$ and ΔE=9.1±1.2 MeV (FWHM), respectively. The peak-to-valley ratio of the ternary fission fragment mass distribution is found to increase with increasing alpha energy. For near-symmetric mass division, a strong broadening of the angular distribution is observed. The results are discussed in the frame of a multichannel-fission model.

Notes: Summary Pulse prednisolone hemisuccinate therapy (500 mg given intravenously on three occasions over two weeks) has been combined with either intramuscular sodium aurothiomalate or azathioprine in an assessment of 30 patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Significant improvement in a variety of clinical and biochemical assessments was seen in both groups. Both treatments were well tolerated by the patients and prednisolone appeared to accelerate the response to sodium aurothiomalate and azathioprine but there was no great evidence that it enhanced it.

Notes: Abstract Fragment mass distributions are presented obtained in the heavy-ion reactions22Ne+249Cf,32S+238U,40Ar+232Th and56Fe+208Pb leading to composite systems with equal nuclear charge numberZ=108. The experiments were performed at the heavy-ion cyclotron U 300 of the Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions in Dubna. The spectrometer DEMAS was used to measure the time-of-flight values and the laboratory angles of the correlated fragments. The shape of the mass distributions strongly depends on the initial mass asymmetry. When decreasing the bombarding energy down to values near the Coulomb barrier, the mass distributions obtained in the reactions32S+238U and40Ar+232Th exhibit relative maxima ofM≈205 interpreted to be due to stabilizing effects of nuclear shells during the fragmentation process.

Notes: Genomic RNA of the Respiratory syntical virus (RS-virus) was used as a template to synthesize calfthymus DNA-primed cDNAs. These cDNAs were subsequently cloned into the E. coli plasmid pBR 322 at the PstI-site. By hybridization 6 recombinants with virusspecific cDNAs representing 10% of the whole genome could be isolated.
