    Notes: Abstract We have reviewed some of the factors which contribute to lung damage by various toxicants. These include disposition of the chemical, its metabolism, individual cell type susceptibility and the potential for the tissue to repair. We have discussed the use of biochemical parameters to measure the functional activity of individual cell types in order to predict the damage to specific cell types and concluded that careful morphological analysis of lung tissue is likely to provide a more sensitive and informative measure of specific cell type injury. However, in order to investigate the mechanism of toxicity of pulmonary toxicants it is essential to establish the primary biochemical event that leads to cell damage and morphological change. The importance of separating the relevant biochemical change(s) from the cascade of biochemical events associated with dead and dying cells and the reparative response of the lung is emphasised.

    Notes: Abstract Public policy making in resources management is greatly influenced by the institutional arrangements that arise out of the legal powers, administrative structures, and financial provisions of the decision system. In British Columbia, the institutional arrangements for energy planning in the province have been greatly altered by the passage of the Utilities Commission Act in 1980. This act redefines the policy implementation process for energy in British Columbia and provides for the regulation of the province's power utility, B.C. Hydro. This is the first time that the hitherto autonomous utility has been subject to regulation and the Utilities Commission Act represents a major reform in the institutional arrangements for energy planning in the province. The article evaluates the effectiveness of the 1980 B.C. Utilities Commission Act and assesses the impact of the legislation upon the institutional arrangements for energy planning in the province. Data for the article were derived from written sources and a series of personal interviews with key participants involved with energy planning in B.C. It is shown that the act represented a major departure in the management of energy resources in B.C. Moreover the implementation of the act's provisions, particularly in regard to B.C. Hydro, had a dramatic impact on the development of new energy projects in the province. It is suggested that while the political and economic climate during the period also favored restraint, the major influence on “taming” the utility was passage of the Utilities Commission Act. The article concludes by exploring the implications of policy changes that have occurred as a consequence of the act's impact on B.C. Hydro.

    Notes: Plasma levels of catecholamines, cortisol, and glucose were monitored in rainbow trout during a 6-week forced swimming exercise programme. Compared to resting non-exercised controls, resting trained fish had lower levels of epinephrine, norephinephrine, cortisol, and glucose during the last 3 weeks of training. Initially, trained fish that were swimming had higher levels of epinephrine than resting trained fish. After 2 weeks of exercise, swimming did not significantly elevate epinephrine levels in trained fish. Glucose levels were consistently greater in swimming fish than in resting fish. At the end of the training period, exercised trout had lower (15–20%) oxygen consumption rates while resting or swimming than unexercised fish.After a 5-month forced swimming exercise programme plasma levels of catecholamines and glucose were monitored in trained and untrained cannulated rainbow trout after 2 min of mild agitation. Trained fish showed an immediate (within 1 min) increase in the levels of epinephrine, but not norepinephrine and a delayed (within 15 min) increase in the levels of plasma glucose. Epinephrine levels returned to pre-stress levels within 15 min. Untrained fish had no significant increase in the plasma levels of norepinephrine, epinephrine, or glucose.

    Notes: Dense oriented superconducting Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O films having zero resistance as high as 100 K have been made using a technique in which spray deposited and pyrolyzed films are densified by either melt quenching or flux sintering. The highest Tc films were those prepared with PbO as a dopant/flux on MgO substrates. Films without lead doping prepared on both BeO and MgO substrates yielded resistive transitions of 81–83 K. For these latter films, it was demonstrated that a subsequent anneal in argon enhanced the Tc to 87 K. The films were characterized by x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and four-point probe resistance measurements. The critical current density of a film having a Tc of 81 K was 4000 A/cm2 at 78 K and 14 000 A/cm2 at 55K.

    Notes: At a time when hospital mortality for adult cardiac operations is continuing to fall, the combined mitral valve coronary bypass subset remains at relatively high risk. Efforts to improve results should be directed toward a more general application of mitral reconstruction in this population, tailoring the type of repair to the pathological anatomy of valve dysfunction. Other promising therapeutic measures include the liberal use of reperfusion therapy in the acute papillary muscle dysfunction group, better selection patients for operation, and perhaps operative recommendation to a greater proportion of the more stable patients that previously were treated medically. Finally increasing the general awareness of this problem should hasten the development of improved management strategies.

    Notes: We have lased the new material, LiSrAlF6:Cr3+ (Cr3+:LiSAF). The single crystals were grown by the horizontal zone melting technique. The spectroscopic properties of Cr3+:LiSAF are similar to those of other low-field Cr3+-doped systems, although the emission cross section is strongly π polarized and is also somewhat larger than has been measured for other fluoride hosts. The free-running lasing wavelength of Cr3+:LiSAF is 825 nm, and the tuning range extends from at least 780 to 920 nm. Using Kr laser pumping, we obtained slope efficiencies of 36% and 14% by utilizing output couplings of 4.8% and 0.8%, respectively. On the basis of these results, the extrapolated maximum efficiency of 53% is determined, to be compared to the quantum defect-limited value of 78%. It is concluded that a moderate level of excited state absorption (ESA) loss is responsible for the reduced efficiency of the Cr3+:LiSAF system. This contrasts with the related results previously obtained for LiCaAlF6:Cr3+, where it was concluded that the effects of ESA were negligible [IEEE J. Quantum Electron. QE-24, 2243 (1988)].
