Notes: Abstract Picocyanobacteria, which specifically excited the phycobilin pigments by green light, were numerically counted under an epifluorescence microscope in the Kuroshio and the Oyashio between 1 and 9 July 1983, and in coastal waters between 10 and 12 August 1983 off Japan. The fluorescence, and the various morphological and chemical characters of the picocyanobacteria were evaluated by using monospecific strains isolated from the study area. Plasma volume determined on the epifluorescence microscopic photographs was converted into cellular organic carbon using a relation obtained from the isolates. Percentages of the picocyanobacteria biomass in terms of cellular carbon ranged between 8.3 to 79.4% of the total picophytoplankton (〈3 μm), and between 4.7 to 46.4% of the total phytoplankton. The larger percentages of the picocyanobacteria occurred consistently in low chlorophyll waters.

Notes: Abstract Spectral absorption of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) by natural phytoplankton and photosynthetic rates under blue, green, red and white lights with various intensities were determined in the thermally stratified open sea off Shikoku Island, Japan, between 9 June and 8 July 1982. Two characteristic phytoplankton populations, sun- and shade-types, were recognized above and below the 10% light depth, respectively, from photosynthetic responses. The shade-type is characterized by a small photosynthesis maximum at low optimum light intensity, severe photo-inhibition and steep initial slope of photosynthetic rate in comparison with the sun-type. Photosynthetic rates of both types were highest in blue light among three other lights at a given intensity; this “effective use of blue light” is expected to be advantageous mostly for the shade-type because the blue light field predominated at greater depths. Together with these photosynthetic responses and the blue light environment, the subsurface population was expected to maintain effective utilization of light in its habitat. An increase of cell pigment concentration in a low-light environment presumably induced phytoplankton to harvest light energy effectively. Quantum yields determined varied between 0.02 to 0.12 mole C E-1, although no obvious difference was noticed in different light sources and growth habitats.

Notes: Abstract The carbon-isotope selectivity in the multiphoton dissociation of CF3Br is studied in the collisional region of supersonic free jet. The isotopic abundance of12C and13C in C2F6 formed by recombination of the dissociation products is measured with a quadrupole mass spectrometer. An enrichmet factor of 9.4 is obtained for12C with the 9R(30)CO2 laser line while the factor of 6.9 is obtained for13C with the 9P(16) line.

Notes: Summary Twenty patients with essential hypertension were given 400 mg acebutolol once daily for 24 weeks. In order to study if side effects resembling the “Practolol syndrome” developed, ocular effects were sought and antinuclear antibody (ANA) in blood was assessed before and after treatment. ANA was negative both before and after the study in 17 patients; in one patient ANA was positive, but the titre (1:10) was low and did not change during the study. Acebutolol produced no undesirable effects on cornea, conjunctiva or lens. During acebutolol treatment, tear secretion was reduced but tear lysozyme concentration was not significantly altered. Overall, acebutolol had no undesirable action similar to the practolol-induced syndrome, nor did it cause such common clinical ocular symptoms such as dry or gritty eyes.

Notes: In the time-dependent coupled cluster approach the excitation energies can be obtained as eigenvalues of a generally non-Hermitian matrix characterizing the homogeneous part of a linear response equation. This matrix consists of the Hermitian configuration interaction part as well as of a non-Hermitian part which describes the "renormalization'' due to ground state correlations. The relationship between a singular behavior of the ground state coupled cluster equations and the existence of vanishingly small excitation energies in the linear response formalism is pointed out. The explicit form of the required matrix elements in the orthogonally spin-adapted version of the theory is given for configuration spaces restricted to single and double excitations. A numerical test of the formalism for π-electron models of trans-butadiene and benzene is carried out and the relationship of the time-dependent coupled cluster approach with other many body approaches to excitation energies calculation is discussed.

Notes: The dependence of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy on temperature and composition has been investigated for various (Fe,Co)–rare-earth amorphous binary alloy films prepared by evaporation. The temperature dependence of the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy is proportional to the third power of the rare-earth sublattice magnetization. The perpendicular magnetic anisotropy consists of two terms related to concentration. One is proportional to the rare-earth content and the other to its square. Both terms can be explained by a large rare-earth single-ion anisotropy.

Notes: The magnetic properties of the M-mica intercalation compounds (M=Mn,Fe,Co, and Ni) in which M elements form a two-dimensional lattice between mica layers have been investigated. The content of the intercalated M element, x, was varied up to about 22 wt. %, which is about 81% with respect to the upper limit of x. The ac susceptibility measurements revealed the magnetic ordering around 10 K for the Fe- (x≥8.0 wt. %), Co- (x≥7.4 wt. %), and Ni-mica intercalation compounds, but did not for the Mn-mica. These magnetic orders are considered to be the two-dimensional ones, caused from the intralayer superexchange interaction between M2+ (and Fe3+) ions.

Notes: Structure and magnetic properties of the rapidly quenched SmTiFe11 alloy ribbons fabricated under various quenching rates were systematically examined. Phase transformation from an equilibrium ThMn12-type structure (tetragonal) to a metastable TbCu7-type disordered structure (hexagonal) was found for the ribbons fabricated around the roll velocity, VR(approximately-equal-to)30 m/s. Magnetocrystalline anisotropy changed from uniaxial (Ku1=5.0×107 erg/cm3) to in-plane anistropy in accordance with the structure change from ThMn12- to TbCu7-type structure. Ms and Tc varied from 125 emu/g and 320 °C (ThMn12 type) to 114 emu/g and 242 °C (TbCu7 type), respectively. The maximum hard magnetic properties for SmTiFe11 alloy ribbons, iHc=3 kOe, (BH)max=3 MGOe, were obtained for the ribbons with a ThMn12-type structure.
