Notes: Ultrasonic scanning in patients with symptoms of threatened abortion occasionally revealed an echo-free area between the membranes and the uterine wall. The echo-free area was found in patients at 11 to 20 weeks gestation who had a live fetus and is believed to represent blood. Seven smaller haematomas of less than 35 ml gradually disappeared and the pregnancies continued until term. Three patients who had haematomas of more than 50 ml subsequently aborted or had a premature delivery.

Notes: It has recently been established that Si self-interstitials are generated during annealing of high-concentration Sb layers in Si. In the present work, we make use of samples grown with molecular-beam epitaxy. We monitor, at different times and temperatures, the diffusion enhancement or retardation of deep B or Sb marker layers next to a 1.1×1020 cm−3 Sb box, as well as the formation of Sb precipitates within the box. It is concluded that the interstitials are not associated with precipitate growth, but that they are generated from formation of Sb-vacancy complexes, primarily involving 2 Sb atoms. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Pelagic North Sea whiting Merlagius merlangus fed at night, while demersal whiting fed by day. The estimated specific daily ration ranged from 4·38 to 7·84% in 1992 and from 3·99 to 10·31% in 1993 using the in situ rate of gastric evacuation. Using Andersen's evacuation model the specific daily ration ranged from 0·41 to 1·66% in 1992 and from 0·78 to 1·75% in 1993. The specific daily rations were significantly different where energy density of stomach content by length class of whiting was significantly different between the two layers and years. The fact that daily ration was related to prey composition and energy density of the prey and spatial distribution of the whiting, demonstrates the need for a sampling design that includes both pelagic and demersal layers when quantifying the food consumption of whiting.

Notes: We show that transient electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra of short lived radical pairs can be written formally as a superposition of Lorentzian-like lines and the corresponding dispersive lines. The coefficients to these spectral components depend strongly on the frequency and amplitude of the microwave (mw) field and consequently a variety of spectral forms may result. The coefficients, and thus the spectral form, are determined by the interradical interaction induced rate of change of the longitudinal and transversal electron spin polarization. The longitudinal polarization is responsible for the well known chemically induced dynamic electron polarization (CIDEP) which changes the intensity of the lines without affecting the line shape. The transversal polarization is shown to be responsible for the antiphase structure (APS) in accordance with our previous proposition [J. Chem. Phys. 109, 8743 (1998)]. A simple one re-encounter model calculation illustrates and explains qualitatively most of the observed APS characteristics. Numerical calculations are used to discuss anomalously large APS splitting. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Saithe Pollachius virens, tracked diurnally with a split-beam echosounder, showed no relationship between size and swimming speed. The average and the median swimming speeds were 1·05 m s−1(±0·09 m s−1) and 0·93 m s−1, respectively. However, ping-to-ping speeds up to 3·34 m s−1 were measured for 25–29 cm fish, whose swimming speeds were significantly higher at night (1·08 m s−1) than during the day (0·72 m s−1). The high average swimming speed could be related to the foraging or streaming part of the population and not to potential weakness of the methodology. However, the uncertainty of target location increased with depth and resulted in calculated average swimming speeds of 0·15 m s−1 even for a stationary target. With increasing swimming speed the average error decreased to 0 m s−1 for speeds 〉0·34 m s−1. Species identity was verified by trawling in a pelagic layer and on the bottom.

Notes: The energy density (ED, kJ g-1 wet mass) of saithe Pollachius virens, haddock Melanogrammus aeglefinus, whiting Merlangius merlangus, Norway pout Trisopterus esmarki, herring Clupea harengus, sprat Sprattus sprattus, sandeel Ammodytes marinus and pearlsides Maurolicus Muelleri, from the North Sea, increased with total length, LT. However, there was not always a significant (P〉0·05) linear relationship between LT and ED. Seasonal differences in ED were obvious in mature fish, while geographical differences were insignificant. For all species there was a highly significant correlation (P〈0·0001) between the percent dry mass of the fish (DS) and ED. A general relationship was established for gadoids and sandeel ED=–3·1492+0·3459 DS and herring ED=–4·6395+0·4170 DS. Thus seasonal and size-specific data on ED needed for bioenergetics and gastric evacuation models can be determined simply from DS, which is considerably less costly and time consuming than calorimetry or proximate analysis.

Notes: Aims:  Ossifying fibromyxoid tumour is a rare lesion that generally occurs in the soft tissues of proximal limbs/girdle, or head and neck. Histologically, it usually consists of bland, mitotically inactive, S100+ cells in a fibromyxoid matrix with a characteristic peripheral ossification. However, we present two cases that deviated from this pattern.Material and methods:  One tumour, which was removed from the axilla of a 55-year-old female, was unusual in its large size (120 mm in diameter) and in its restriction of bone formation to its central zones. The other tumour, which occurred in a 62-year-old female, was remarkable in its acral location on the hand and high mitotic activity (four mitoses per high-power field). These features caused concern and follow-up of the patients was recommended. So far there have been no recurrences (25 and 18 months after surgery, respectively). An additional previously undescribed feature was the presence of fibronexus-like structures by electron microscopy in the second case. However, a myofibroblastic phenotype was not supported by the immunohistochemical findings. Conclusion:  Though a distinct entity, ossifying fibromyxoid tumour may exhibit a wider clinicopathological spectrum than generally recognized.

Notes: Summary In five totally pancreatectomized human subjects the secretion of gut-derived glucagons was stimulated by ingestion of a meal rich in fat and carbohydrates. Glucagon-like immunoreactivity in plasma, measured with an antiserum against the 6–15 sequence, increased fivefold in response to the meal. Glucagon like immunoreactivity measured with an antiserum against the C-terminal sequence was initially normal (12–13 pmol/l), increased slightly (to 20 pmol/l), and then decreased (to approximately 6 pmol/1). The Chromatographic profile of glucagon-like immunoreactivity in plasma at maximum stimulation was studied after concentration by affinity chromatography. Both assay systems identified two peaks (at Kd-values of 0.30 and 0.60–0.65, and 0.30 and 0.70, respectively). The position at Kd 0.70 corresponds to that of glucagon 1–29. The same components may be identified in plasma from normal subjects. It is concluded that the human intestine is capable of generating all of the molecular forms of glucagon which normally are present in plasma.

Notes: Summary The efficacy of terbutaline inhaled from different aerosol systems was studied in 13 adult asthmatics. Terbutaline 1 mg was delivered from a pressurised aerosol, 1 and 4 mg were inhaled from a nebuliser, 1 mg was inhaled through a pressurised aerosol with a pear-shaped, 750 ml spacer, and 1 mg was inhaled from a nebuliser with Intermittent Positive Pressure Ventilation (I.P.P.V.). An open, randomized, cross-over design was used. The bronchodilator effect was evaluated by recording hourly flow-volume curves and the FEV1.0 for 5 h after treatment. No significant difference in bronchodilatation was observed after inhalation of 1 mg terbutaline from different aerosol systems, except following use of the nebuliser, which required approximately four times as much terbutaline to obtain the same effect as the ordinary spray.
