Notes: Summary Dendritic arborization pattern, spatial and synaptic relations of various neuron types and the terminal distribution of afferent axons of various origin were studied in the medial superior olivary nucleus of the cat using Golgi, degeneration, electron microscope and horseradish peroxidase techniques. Three types of neurons clearly different in morphological features, distribution, neighbourhood relations, input and output characteristics were distinguished: (1) fusiform cells having specific dendritic orientations and arborization patterns and synaptic relations to various types of terminal axon arborizations (2) multipolar neurons with wavy dendrites bearing spine-like appendages, receiving relatively few synaptic contacts and having a locally arborizing axon, and (3) elongated marginal cells, largely restricted to the fibrous capsule of the nucleus. The fusiform and marginal neurons were identified by retrograde peroxidase labeling as the olivo-collicular projection cells. Ultrastructural analysis of normal and experimental material revealed the presence of four distinct kinds of axon terminals differing in size, synaptic vesicles type, relation to postsynaptic targets and in origin: (i) large terminals with multiple extended asymmetric synaptic membrane specializations and containing round, clear vesicles arise from the spherical cells of the ipsilateral anteroventral cochlear nucleus, (ii) most of the small axon terminal profiles — engaged in asymmetric synaptic contacts — originated from the trapezoid nucleus, (iii) terminal boutons containing pleomorphic vesicles belong to fibers descending from the ipsilateral multipolar neurons in the central nucleus of the inferior colliculus and from the nuclei of the lateral lemniscus while (iv) boutons containing exclusively ovoid vesicles and remaining intact after complete deafferentation of the nucleus were considered to be of local origin.

Notes: Abstract We investigated the reaction of the cellular immune system of liver and blood in the C57BL/6 mouse to a metastasizing Lewis lung carcinoma. The cellular immune system of the liver consists of mature and immature macrophages, B-cells, T-cells including their subpopulations, and natural killer cells, and their percentage frequencies differ significantly from those in the corresponding mononuclear blood cell (MBC) compartment. This suggests that the hepatic immune cells represent a system with autonomous function showing a typical homing of its members. Imminent metastasis to the liver is signalled by impressive alterations in the percentage frequencies of nonparenchymal liver cells (NPLC). There are a dramatic loss of mature macrophages, an increase in immature macrophages, a reduction of T-helper cells leading to a low CD4/CD8 ratio, and an increase in natural killer cells. In the blood, the corresponding precursor cells show comparable changes with a delay of at least 2 days. Early metastasis is accompanied by a significant increase in mononuclear NPLC producing tumour necrosis factor α. The alterations in percentage frequencies of the NPLC during tumour metastasis differ markedly from the changes in these cells in the liver during endotoxinaemia.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract
Notes: Abstract A wide range of halogen containing reagents (metal halides, oxyhalides, acid halides, etc.) are found to interact from the gas phase with exchange ions of zeolites and to effect dealumination at elevated temperatures. The incorporation of extraneous ions into the framework by this technique is not impossible theoretically. The importance of the method in the preparation of dealuminated and/or metal containing catalysts is discussed.

Notes: [Auszug] The gene coding for the modification methylase of Bacillus sphaericus R had previously been cloned in this laboratory and had been shown to be expressed in Escherichia coli from its own promoter5. The recombinant plasmid pES2 carries the methylase gene on a 2.5 kilobase (kb) EcoRl fragment inserted ...

Notes: Summary The authors report the case of a mother and her infant who both suffered from acute lymphoid leukemia (ALL). Both leukemic processes proved to be Ph1 positive and of “0” cell character. In addition to the clinical and hematological findings the results of HLA antigen determination and cytogenetic studies are presented.

Notes: Summary Platelet-associated IgG (PAIgG) was detected by means of anti-human IgG coated polyacrylamide beads (“Immunobeads”) technique in 32 patients with chronic ITP. Both a direct test (with in vivo sensitized platelets) and an indirect test (with in vitro loaded platelets) were carried out. The percent of rosette forming beads was both in the direct test (41.2%) and in the indirect test (32.6%) significantly higher in the cases of chronic ITP patients than in the controls (2.5% and 3.2%, respectively). These results confirm the diagnostic value of this new, relatively simple and rapid method in routine clinical practice.
