Notes: Abstract We used geologic and geochemical techniques to document the change with time of the distribution and concentration of contaminated bottom sediments in southern Lake Champlain near an International Paper Company plant. Our work, initiated in 1972, was expanded on behalf of Vermont citizens in a class-action suit against the International Paper Company. To update our 1972–1973 results, we collected nine cores in 1988 upstream and downstream from the paper plant effluent diffuser. Water content, volatile solids, organic carbon, and three ratios, Al/Si, Cl/Si, and S/Si, in addition to megascopic and microscopic observations, were evaluated to identify and trace the distribution of effluent and to measure the thickness of sediment affected by or containing components of effluent. Analyses were carried out on samples from the cores as well as from effluent collected directly from the plant's waste treatment facility. In 1973, two years after the plant opened, we cored near the diffuser; sediment contaminated with effluent was 4.5 cm thick. In 1988, in the same area, sediment contaminated with effluent was 17 cm thick. In 15 years, water content increased from 72 to 85 percent, volatile solids from 7 to 20 percent, and organic carbon from 2 to 12 percent. Cl/Si and S/Si were high only near the diffuser and were zero elsewhere. In the area of the diffuser, contaminated sediment appears to be accumulating at a rate of about 1 cm/yr. At a control location 22 km upstream (south) from the plant, the top, poorly consoli-dated layer was only 1 cm or less thick both in 1973 and in 1988. The class-action suit was settled in favor of the plaintiffs for $5 million.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary A deteriorating nutritional condition combined with the loss of body mass is one of the most noticeable symptoms of cancer. In order to answer the question to what extent absorption disorders in the small intestine are responsible for the malnutrition which develops, we studied 54 oncologic patients using modified D-xylose absorption tests. After the oral and intravenous administration of 10 g D-xylose at different times, the degree of absorption dependent on time was determined on the basis of a biophysical model. When accompanied by general nonspecific tumor symptoms, the frequency of absorption restrictions was increased. An established relation was found between the extent of small intestinal absorption, on the one hand, and the degree of spreading (staging) and the degree of histological differentiation of the carcinoma, on the other hand. Enteral absorption disorders represent a partial cause for the development of malnutrition in cancer patients and must be viewed as a result of a metabolic situation which is distinctly catabolic.

Notes: Abstract We study the resonant magnetopolaron effects in parabolic quantum wells in a tilted magnetic field. The renormalization of the first excited level, which is resonant with the ground state level plus one longitudinal-optical phonon is calculated at the resonance using an improved resonance approximation to be ΔE=γαβ where α is the polaron coupling constant. The exponent β and the factor γ are calculated in dependence on the tilt angle of the magnetic field and the confinement energy.

Notes: Abstract The relationship between herpes simplex virus (HSV) and oral mucositis was investigated in children undergoing antineoplastic chemotherapy. HSV culture was performed in 20 children with stomatitis developing after antineoplastic chemotherapy. Viral isolates were typed and susceptibility to acyclovir was investigated. The virus was isolated from oral lesions in 10 of 20 children with severe oral mucositis. Viral reactivation was the most likely explanation in most cases, since HSV was isolated in 9 of 13 seropositive patients (and in 1 patient with unknown anti-HSV serology), but in no seronegative patient. HSV type 1 was isolated more frequently than HSV type 2 (8 versus 2). Acyclovir showed standard in vitro activity against all isolates. Our results suggest that oral mucositis in children receiving antineoplastic treatment is probably multifactorial in origin and that HSV can be an important cofactor, especially in children who are seropositive for HSV. In our Centre, acyclovir remains active in vitro against this opportunistic pathogen and could be employed in prophylaxis and therapy.

Notes: Abstract Accurate, confirmed mass excess values have been determined for the nuclei60, 62Fe,68Ni,69Cu, and73, 75Ga by theQ-value method. The mass of74Zn requires further study. Good agreement was found between experimentally determined mass values and those from mass model predictions.
