Notes: Hypophysectomized (Hypo-X) rats do not develop contact sensitivity to dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB). Daily treatment with prolactin or growth hormone completely restores the DNCB-reactivity of Hypo-X animals. Treatment of such animals with ACTH, FSH, LH, TSH or HCG has no restoring potential. Treatment with ACTH in addition to prolactin or growth hormone antagonizes restoration of Hypo-X rats. These experiments indicate that the pituitary gland has the potential of regulating contact sensitivity.

Notes: Hypophysectomized (Hypo-X) rats did not develop contact dermatitis in response to dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB). Syngeneic pituitary grafts placed under the kidney capsule or daily treatment with prolactin restored the DNCB-reactivity of Hypo-X animals. Combined treatment with other pituitary hormones was ineffective. Treatment of normal rats with a potent prolactin antagonist drug, bromocriptine, was as effective in inhibiting contact sensitivity as was hypophysectomy. These results indicate that contact sensitivity is a prolactin dependent reaction.

Notes: Abstract Mixing models for bioreactors on the basis of the tanks-in-series concept are presented and a suitable parameter-estimation method is introduced. The Monte-Carlo-optimization procedure with the inhomogeneity-curve included in the objective function is used. Results of the parameter optimization procedure are given for stirred-tank-bioreactors equipped with one and three Rushton turbines under aerated conditions. The model designed for the stirredtank with three Rushton turbines is capable to describe the mixing properties, while in case of the stirred-tank with one Rushton turbine the simulated radial circulation time does not correlate with the measured one.

Notes: Summary A comparative pharmacokinetic study was performed with two types of suppository each containing 20 mg piroxicam. The bioavailability of piroxicam was studied in 24 healthy volunteers in a double blind, randomised, cross over study. No significant difference was found in the pharmacokinetic parameters [AUC(0–72 h), AUC, Cmax, t1/2β calculated from plasma concentration time curves, indicating that the two preparations were bioequivalent.

Notes: Summary Seven fragments of the spike (S) gene cDNA of transmissible gastroenteritis virus (TGEV), as well as the full length cDNA, were cloned and expressed in baculovirus vectors. Piglets were immunized with cells infected with the recombinant viruses. Each of the recombinants induced TGEV-specific antibodies detected in a fixed cell enzyme immunoassay. The amino terminal half of the S protein, containing all four major antigenic sites (A, B, C and D), and encoded by a 2.2 kb fragment of the S gene, induced virus neutralizing (VN) antibody titers comparable with those induced by the complete S protein. Recombinant proteins lacking the A antigenic site, or with a deletion including the putative receptor binding sites and the D antigenic site, were not capable of inducing levels of VN antibodies similar to those induced by the whole S protein.

Notes: Summary The authors have applied intraosseous phlebography 38 times in 33 children, in order to assess the extent of damage to the femoral head circulation in fractures of the femoral neck and other disorders. Contrast medium was injected mostly into the epiphysis, but eventually into the metaphysis too. Results of these examinations have been important guidelines in the management of the disease, i.e. if the venous drainage of the contrast medium was delayed or absent, or if the contrast medium was congested in the head, the weightbearing had to be releaved until regenerative signs of the femoral head were seen.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The authors examined the growth of the body size of pheasant, partridge and mallard, the O2-consumption, the CO2-output and the energy production up to the end of the juvenile phase. In the case of the pheasant, the values of the base requirement, the maintenance requirement and the energyproduction consumption were determined. The rearing of the animals and the determination of the above parameters in the three game birds took place in each case under air temperatures set by the maintenance technology and with appropriate feeding. In order to establish the energy consumption (O2-consumption, CO2-output), indirect calometric methods were used in theVötsch controlled environment chamber with theNoyons diaphorometer. Average values were developed from the individual oberservations and presented graphically after logarithmic transformation. The graphs allowed conclusions on the biological phases present and the critical change of phases. According to the parameters measured, moulting plays an important role in the phase changes and in the accompanying changes in the temperature regulation. The authors point out that recognition of the critical biological development phases is now essential for the rational feeding of the birds and for their maintenance. The heat production determined indirectly by calorimeter allows the calculation of the ME-content of the dispensed food necessary for the age and the biological development phase and of the birds' growth and production-energy demand. The examination data can also be further used as a basis for the planning and building of breeding systems and equipment.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Radiale Dichtedifferenzfunktionen für PC anda-PS werden im Temperaturbereich zwischen 393 K und 563 K aus Röntgenweitwinkel-Messungen berechnet.
Notes: Summary Radial difference distribution functions were calculated for PC anda-PS in a temperature range from 293 K to 455 K using wide angle X-ray scattering. Corrections of experimental scattering curves were examined. An assignment for some distances to intra- and intermolecular correlations was made. Next neighbour distances obtained from RDDFs are in good agreement with theoretically computed distances.

Notes: Abstract The in vitro activity of daptomycin-metronidazole combinations against mixed cultures of gram-positive facultative cocci and strains of theBacteroides fragilis group was investigated. Metronidazole did not influence the high activity of daptomycin against strains ofStaphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis andEnterococcus faecalis in the absence or presence of the co-culturedBacteroides strains. In contrast, theEnterococcus faecalis isolates protected the co-culturedBacteroides strains against the killing effect of metronidazole, even at a concentration four- or eightfold the MIC of metronidazole. Killing curve experiments confirmed this protective effect of different isolates ofEnterococcus faecalis.
