    Notes: Abstract Extracts of thirty six Agaricales fungi were assayed for their antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538, Bacillus subtilis ATCC 6633 and Escherichia coli UCCL51. Approximately thirty species showed activity against one or more of the tested organisms.

    Notes: Summary Ultrastructural and histochemical studies performed on the skeletal elements of the tail fins of six representative species of teleosts enabled the following observations to be made. The electron microscopic pattern of amorphous substance deposition, and the diameter of the collagen fibrils, in lepidotrichia closely resemble those which are typical of cartilage. In addition, lepidotrichia contain chondroitin sulfate AC as the only sulfated glycosaminoglycan, and this glycosaminoglycan shows high levels of interaction with collagen, both features being characteristic of cartilage. Furthermore, the histochemical data presented in this paper suggest that not all of the glycosaminoglycans present in lepidotrichia are bound to protein cores to form proteoglycans. Each actinotrichium consists of a single ultrastructural entity of remarkable width and, thus, is not composed of a bundle of discretely separated collagen fibrils but rather of hyperpolymerized collagen molecules. This aspect differs from the arrangement pattern of all the other interstitial collagens, suggesting that actinotrichia may contain a new type of collagen.

    Notes: Abstract The efficacy of 2′-deoxyguanosine (GdR) on the induction of binucleate cells in onion root tips was studied. GdR inhibits plant cytokinesis during the last part of the mitotic period. Apparently, this deoxynucleoside causes a considerable slowing down in the mitotic rate (50%) and also has a slight effect as an inhibitor of cytokinesis (30%). The effect on the mitotic rate was established with 1 mM colchicine (metaphase rate) and with 5 mM caffeine (telophase rate). Since 1 mM GdR has a remarkable potentiating action on inhibition of cytokinesis by caffeine, we postulate that GdR, or a phosphorylated derivative from it, inhibits cytokinesis by a similar mechanism as caffeine. According to our postulation, GdR interferes with a certain ATPase activity required for membrane fusion of the Golgi vesicles during plant cytokinesis.

    Notes: Summary Two different types of ependymal cells were found in the subcommissural organ (SCO) of Natrix maura. Most secretory cells showed morphological features resembling the general structure and ultrastructure of cells in the SCO of other vertebrates. This report describes a second population of cells lining a portion of the dorsal groove of the SCO. These cells were not selectively stained by chromalum-hematoxylin and, under the electron microscope, they were characterized by scarce surface differentiations, sparse apical cytoplasm and short basal processes. Flat, parallel cisternae of the rough endoplasmic reticulum produced vesicles that appeared to be transported to the well-developed Golgi apparatus. Dense secretory granules about 200 nm in diameter were found in the Golgi region. Similar granules were seen in the vicinity of the apical plasma membrane; some of them opened toward the ventricle. All these characteristics clearly differentiate this cell group from the other secretory cells lining the SCO laterally and ventrally.

    Notes: Summary A morphologic study of the structure of the tail fin in eight species of teleosts was performed by aid of the Picrosirius-polarization method, which is a specific histochemical method for the detection of collagen in tissue sections. This structure is composed mainly of skeletal elements, the fin rays, covered by skin. Fin rays are bound to each other and to the surrounding tissues by a series of collagenous ligaments forming a complex, highly pliable and resistant structure. Although the general structural pattern of tail fins was consistent in all species studied, the comparative aspects reported in this paper show that variations in the form and size of their components are responsible for the morphologic diversities which are closely related to specific functional adaptations. Morphometric data on the number and size of actinotrichia in normal adult specimens are presented.
