Notes: Summary We have partially characterized the specificity of serum lectins from the scorpionVaejovis spinigerus Wood. Agglutination, crossed-absorption and hemagglutination-inhibition patterns were similar but not identical to serum lectins from other members from the family Vaejovidae, and different from the Buthidae species studied so far.V. spinigerus serum lectins bind sialic acids and sialoconjugates, but also bind 2-keto-3-deoxyoctonate, uronic acids and N-acylaminosugars, all substances present in bacterial cell walls suggesting that they might be involved in defense functions.

Notes: Abstract Two children aged 18 and 30 months presented with severe renovascular hypertensio. Initially, surgical intervention was postponed because of the patients' young age. Adequate control of the hypertension and reversal of its sequelae were achieved with aggressive medical management. At present, both patients, aged 9 and 12 years respectively, have discontinued all medication, have achieved normal growth, are normotensive and have normal renal function.

Notes: The effect of oxygen retained on beet powder on the stability of betanine and vulgaxanthine I was studied at 35°C as a function of aw (“dry”-0.75). moisture content, added aluminium oxide powder and headspace gases (N2, air). Limited degradation was observed under N2 or air and aw± 0.41. Deterioration was accelerated at aw± 0.52 and the presence of added Al2O3. This was interpreted as a lack of liquid phase mobility which retarded the reaction up to ± 0.5 aw. Above 0.5 aw the transition in the mechanism was related to the concentration of the dissolved 02 in the liquid phase, which controlled the deterioration rate. The latter was strongly affected by the added Al2O3. In the presence of aluminium oxide, the very fast pigment oxidation suggested a catalytic reaction.

Notes: Data on the composition of Israeli orange juice, grapefruit juice, orange peel and grapefruit peel were analyzed. Significant differences were found mainly between the juice and peel in the content of isocitric acid, ash, minerals, total pectin, total flavonoids, chlorides, phosphates, chloramine-T number and arginine. The significance of these findings in detecting juice adulteration with peel extract solids is discussed. The chemical and amino acids characteristics of the citrus products analyzed may be used to establish guidelines required for detecting citrus juice adulteration.

Notes: The effect of water activity (“dry”– 0.84) and moisture content on the stability of beet pigments (betanine and vulgaxanthine I) was investigated in beet powder stored at 35°C. Pigment deterioration followed a first order reaction. Water activity and moisture content had a pronounced exponential effect on pigment stability. A decrease of approximately one order of magnitude in pigment stability was observed when aw was increased from 0.32 to 0.75. Storing the powder at aw of 0.12 or below resulted in practically no deterioration of the pigments over a period of several months. Profound differences in pigment stability were attributed to sorption hysteresis and system composition.

Notes: Abstract This paper, as part of a series on elastic wave scattering, presents results of measurements and calculations on scattering of ultrasonic waves by a solid spherical inclusion (tungsten carbide) embedded in titanium alloy by the diffusion bonding process. Both direct scattering and mode-converted scattering angular distributions are reported for shear and compressional incident waves. The consequences upon the signals when transmitter and receiver were interchanged are explored in a reciprocity rule.

Notes: Summary Considerable acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity was detected in anAedes aegypti established cell line. The enzyme is blocked by 10−6 M eserine sulfate, displays excess substrate inhibition and slowly hydrolyzes butyrylthiocholine. A 2-fold stimulation of AChE activity was shown after 2 days exposure to 3×10−7 M β-ecdysone. AChE activity found in the fresh medium is the contribution of the fetal calf serum portion. A direct relationship between levels of serum and the AChE activity in the cultured cells was demonstrated.

Notes: Summary Lectins which bind sialic acid-containing receptors are present in the hemolymph of the scorpionParuroctonus mesaensis Stahnke. Glycoproteins like bovine submaxillary mucin, fetuin and human orosomucoid behave as strong inhibitors forParuroctonus lectins; desialylation of glycoproteins results in a drastic reduction of their inhibitory capabilities confirming that sialic acids are the terminal monosaccharides ofParuroctonus lectin receptors.
