Notes: The results of critical threshold experiments on four commonly occurring heavy minerals are described. The data are presented, in conjunction with comparable quartz data, using the non-dimensional Shields’ Curve and the Movability Number (U*/ws). The results indicate that critical shear stress for material of high density is overestimated by use of Shields’ Curve, under smooth boundary conditions. Grain settling velocity is found to be a good indicator for the critical shear stress for grains of a wide density range. A physical explanation for the results is proposed.

Notes: Marrow from cervical, lumbar and femur bones of 5 steers and 5 cows fed only on native range (grass fed) and 5 steers and 5 cows fed a finishing ration (grain fed) was analyzed for cholesterol content. The cholesterol content of the marrow was significantly different when diet or anatomical locations were compared. Bovine marrow from grass-fed animals averaged 119.6 mg/100g and marrow from grain-fed animals averaged 150.6 mg/100g marrow. The cholesterol content of marrow from the cervical, lumbar, and femur was 190.1, 124.1, and 91.0 mg/100g marrow, respectively. Mechanically deboned meat (MDM) and beef lean had a mean cholesterol content of 153.3 and 50.9 mg/100g tissue. Spinal cord material in MDM can account for the increased concentration of cholesterol in some MDM samples over the values for lean and marrow.

Notes: The feeding periodicity of Mugil cephalus (striped mullet) was investigated during the summer and autumn of 1979 using percentage body weight made up of stomach contents as an indicator of feeding intensity. One study site was freshwater, the other was estuarine and both were tidally influenced. Mullet at both sites feed diurnally, with maximum intensity occurring at about 11.00 hours and little or no feeding occurring at night. Fish from the freshwater site have larger standard length-specific intestine lengths and also include more plant material in their diet than do mullet from the estuarine site. At both sites fish longer than 28 cm standard length (s.l.) tend to be female; the difference from a 50:50 sex ratio is highly significant in both cases. Females longer than 28 cm s.l. outnumber all other sex and size combinations at the freshwater site, but comprise only 28% of fish collected at the estuarine site.

Notes: Spotted seatrout, Cynoscion nebulosus (Cuvier), and spot, Leiostomus xanthurus Lacèpéde, from two sites along Florida's west coast were collected, weighed, sexed and measured. A systematic search for plerocercoids of the cestode Poecilancistrium caryophyllum yielded infection prevalences of 81.9% for C. nebulosus and 25.0% for L. xanthurus. The maximum infection intensity was 10 (mean = 2.65) plerocercoids per fish in C. nebulosus and six (mean = 1.69) per fish in L. xanthurus. Significant correlations were found between infection prevalence and length in C. nebulosus, and a significant correlation was observed between intensity and length in both species. Condition coefficient (K) and intensity were negatively correlated in C. nebulosus but not in L. xanthurus. An iterative computer technique based on the truncated negative binomial distribution indicated no parasite-induced mortality occurred in either species. Sand drum, Umbrina coroides Cuvier, is reported as a new host record for P. caryophyllum.

Notes: Summary Nasutitermes octopilis Banks is an abundant termite in the Kartabo area and other forested regions of Guyana. It lives in moist dead wood, with a gallery development similar to that seen in some species of Rhinotermitidæ. It does not build covered runways; instead, it tunnels in soil and forest floor litter.N. octopilis soldiers can withstand ant attack more effectively than soldiers of other commonNasutitermes species in the erea. Their secretion appears to be repellent to ants, and renders worker termites selected from groups of workers and soldiers that have been in combat with one or more ants less acceptable as food to certain ant species. Pronounced differences in chemical composition between the secretions ofN. octopilis soldiers and other members of the genus are paralleled by differences in reactions elicited from ants. No evidence of toxicity or difference in “stickiness” from soldier secretions of members of other species of the genus was obtained.N. octopilis soldiers are very slow to fire their secretion, and do not rush out when the galleries are disturbed. Instead, they remain with the workers, and, by firing sparingly, can provide protection for longer intervals than similar-sized nasutes which fire more readily. In addition, secretions of otherNasutitermes species do not seem to render their combat-veteran workers less acceptable as food items. The abundance of the other species ofNasutitermes seems to be related to the building of covered runways and durable carton nests.

Notes: Abstract Experimental data are described on the threshold of transport of quartz, ilmenite, and cassiterite grains under oscillatory flow in a flume and the results are compared to those of other investigators. The results show that for a given particle size, critical shear stress (τcrit) increases with increasing wave period and that τcrit increases with both grain size and grain density. These data are compared with prediction equations.

Notes: Abstract Observations of tidal current velocities, their structure throughout the water column and associated sediment distribution patterns were made in 1972 and 1980. The results demonstrated: 1. an increase in the tidal current speeds and an enhancement in the longshore component; 2. a trend toward a more logarithmic velocity distribution in the water column; and 3. a general increase in grain size, but the development of alower mud flat. Such significant changes could relate to the construction of an embankment, as part of a land reclamation scheme, or to the reversion to a longer-term period of erosion over this region of intertidal flat.

Notes: Abstract The morphology and mobility of bedforms within a sand wave field having a water depth of 30 to 40 m have been studied by side-scan sonar surveys at different tidal stages and under various wave climates. Large sand waves with heights of 4 to 7 m retained their orientation throughout the survey period, Small sand waves with heights less than 2 to 3 m changed their height over a tidal cycle and their location (relative to larger sand waves) between surveys. The maximum change appeared to be related to ebb current acceleration. Megaripple wavelengths were reduced under surface wave action.

Notes: Summary Five viruses isolated from 114 hunter-killed doves (Columba species) in Tennessee, U.S.A. in 1975 were shown to be related paramyxoviruses which represent a new serologically distinct group of avian paramyxoviruses. We propose that this subtype be designated as PMV-7 in the current system of nomenclature.

Notes: Summary Representatives of paramyxoviruses isolated from waterfowl in the U.S.A., goose/Delaware/1053/76, and Japan, pintail/Wakuya/20/78, were shown to be serologically closely related but distinct from other avian paramyxoviruses. Another isolate, from domestic ducks in the U.S.A., was shown to be representative of a further distinct serotype of avian paramyxoviruses. We propose that, in the current system of nomenclature these serotypes be designated PMV-8, for which the prototype strain would be PMV-8/goose/Delaware/1053/76 and PMV-9, for which the prototype strain would be PMV-9/domestic duck/New York/22/78.
