Description / Table of Contents: Riassunto Si impiega l'analisi a fotoni appaiati per miscele di bosoni insieme all'approssimazione dell'«hypernetted chain» per studiare le proprietà dello stato fondamentale di un'impurezza inglobata nell'4He liquido.
Notes: Summary The paired-phonon analysis for boson mixtures is employed in conjunction with the hypernetted-chain approximation to study the ground-state properties of an impurity embedded in liquid4He. Chemical potentials, volume coefficients and other thermodynamic quantities as well as some of the most interesting optimal correlation functions are calculated for various impurities interacting with the4He background atoms via Lennard-Jones potentials of differing strength.

Notes: Summary 1. The common vampire bat,Desmodus rotundus, is known to be capable of detecting temperature differences. In the experiments described here two animals were trained to give preference to the radiation emitted by a warm signal unit (the negative unit was left at room temperature). The distance between the decision line and the signal units was 8, 12 or 16 cm. Both animals responded to radiation as low as 0.5 × 10−4 W cm−2 (Fig. 3). 2. Based on calculations of the radiation emitted by the human skin, vampires should be capable of detecting warm-blooded animals at a distance up to 16 cm (Fig. 4). This sense for thermal radiation may aid these bats in localizing or selecting a suitable biting site. 3. Histological studies of the bats' facial structures indicate that thermal stimuli are most probably perceived in the three pits surrounding the central nose leaf: the thin, hairless and glandless skin is underlaid with dense connective tissue. Thermography reveals that the surface temperature of the nasal region is up to 9 °C lower than that of the neighboring parts of the face (Fig. 2).

Notes: Using a generalized Fermi hypernetted chain method on a Jastrow trial ground-state wave function, which includes a dependence on the z component of the nuclear spin, it is shown that spin correlations make a significant contribution to the ground-state energy of liquid 3He, accounting for much of the energy necessary to stabilize unpolarized liquid 3He relative to completely polarized 3He.

Notes: Chemical engineering of coal hydrogenation in sump phase reactors. The science of chemical engineering was still in its infancy when the hydrogenation of coal was developed from 1924 onwards at Ludwigshafen, Rhineland. The term backmixing, for example, was unknown. Nevertheless, the scale-up from a pilot to a production reactor was performed correctly at that time. Even with today's knowledge, the IG Farben sump phase reactors could not have been better designed. Almost four decades have meanwhile elapsed since the cessation of coal hydrogenation in Germany (1945). Nowadays high pressure reactors having more than 50 times the volume of the IG reactors can be produced. Considerable advances have also been made in measurement and control engineering. Hence new chemical engineering questions and solutions arise. If coal hydrogenation is to be performed on a significant industrial scale in 10 to 20 years, this will be economically feasible only by exploiting the possibilities of large reactors having a throughput of 1 to 3 million tons of coal per annum.
