Notes:
Summary The vascular systems of the deep fasciae of adult, newborn and foetal lower extremities are displayed in microscopic preparations. 1. The arterial inflow to the vascular system of the fascia stems from cutaneous arteries and arteries of the subfascial areolar tissue. The venous drainage is by cutaneous venae comitantes, perforating veins and small collecting veins of the subfascial areolar tissue. 2. By means of numerous arterio-arterial and intervenous anastomoses the typical vascular magistrals form a polygonal fascial network, which lies on the subcutaneous side of the fascia. 3. The terminal vascular system of the fascial network is characterized by a capillary network accompanying the vascular magistrals. Numerous capillaries, arterioles and venules run between the superficial collagen fibre bundles of the fascia and are thus oriented parallel to the fibre texture. 4. In addition, periarterial capillary cuffs, free tortuous capillaries, looped as well as meandering or knotted arterio-venous shunts are found. 5. In cases where larger collagen fibre bundles are crossing blood vessels circumscribed alterations in lumen of the smaller arteries and veins of the fascial network are occassionally seen. 6. In stratified fascial sheets or stronger fasciae (e.g. tractus iliotibialis fasciae latae) there is an intrafascial vascular network. It supplies deeper layers of the fascia, intrafascial fat and areolar tissue. At the fascial openings for cutaneous vessels branchlets are given off for the vasa vasorum et nervorum. 7. There are regional differences in the vascular systems of the fascia. These differences are related to the variations in texture of the fasciae. 8. At the periosteum, fascial muscle origins, tendon insertions, subfascial areolar tissue and tendon sheathes the angio-architecture of the intrafascial network or underside vessels of the fasciae are especially differentiated. 9. Collagen fibre fasciculi which spread out from the fascial texture and subcutaneous fasciae possess their own vascular systems. 10. The fascial network participates in the vascularisation of the prefascial areolar tissue. Vascular patches with plane capillary networks, looped capillaries and solitary arteriovenous shunts form in the neighbourhood of joints several overlying vascular planes of prefascial areolar tissue. 11. Cutaneous nerves within the prefascial areolar tissue are enclosed within a dense conjunctival capillary sleeve. A fascial nerve network with typical angioarchitecture wa s also prepared. 12. The differentiation of the vascular system of the fascia and its connections with the surroundings develops from a foetal vascular plexus in the second half of intrauterine life. The final stage, especially of the terminal flow path, is not yet determined perinatally.
