Notes: Summary A man aged 64, with a history of chronic trichloroethylene intoxication, presented early headache, impairment of memory, and “stehende Redensarten”, later on mental deterioration with muteness and oral tendency. He died of bronchopneumonia. The brain was studied by light and electron microscopy. Numerous inflated cells, intraneuronal argentophil Pick bodies and central chromatolysis of neurons were found throughout the cerebral cortex. Widespread diffuse fibrillary gliosis was the finding bearing a striking resemblance to “progressive subcortical gliosis”. Severe loss of nerve cells was observed in the temporal lobe (except the posterior of T1) and moderate or mild loss in the gyrus rectus, insula, gyrus cinguli, and partial areas of the frontal, parietal, and occipital lobes. By electron microscopy, the argentophil Pick bodies consisted of a conglomeration of randomly arranged short 100–150Å filaments, ribosomes, vesicles mitochondria, and scanty paired helical filaments. The present case was considered to represent a rare case of Pick's disease of the temporo-fronto-parieto-occipital type or panencephalic type.

Notes: Summary A primary Burkitt-type lymphoma of the central nervous system (CNS) is presented. The right temporoparietal tumor in a woman of 55 was diagnosed histologically as a Burkitt-type lymphoma. Primary Burkitt-type lymphoma of the CNS is extremely rare and has been reported previously only four times. This is the first case reported in Eastern Asia.

Notes: Abstract Hematocrit and hemoglobin concentration of yellowtail blood elevated more than 30% during severe hypoxia for 35 or 40 min. About 40% of the hematocrit elevation is considered to have been caused by erythrocyte supply from the spleen, and about 60% by hemoconcentration due to water shift out of the circulating plasma. Osmotic swelling of erythrocytes is considered not to have occurred, judging from the constant level in the saturation index of the blood.

Notes: The genetic control of hybrid resistance to BALB/c fibrosarcoma Meth-A was investigated. A Meth-A tumour grew slower in (BALB/c X C57BL/6)F1 and reciprocal hybrid mice than in syngeneic BALB/c mice and was also found to grow slower in females than in males. Significant F1 resistance was demonstrated after both subcutaneous and intraperitoneal injection of tumour cells. However, (BALB/c X DBA/2)F1 mice did not show any significant resistance to Meth-A. In H-2 linkage studies of [BALB/c X (BALB/c X C57BL/6)] backcross mice, no statistically significant differences in the resistance of H-2 heterozygotes and homozygotes to Meth-A were observed. These results indicated that F1 hybrid resistance to Meth-A was controlled by non-H-2-linked resistance factor(s). No linkage was observed between resistance to Meth-A and coat colour c- and b-loci.

Notes: Tissues peripheral to well-developed papules of colloid milium were chosen for biopsy and electron microscopy examination. Evidence was presented that colloid is derived from elastic fibres through sequential degenerative changes. In the upper to middle dermis of the peripheral tissue, a number of abnormal masses in the vicinity of small colloid depositions were observed. Ultrastructurally, those abnormal masses were degenerating elastic fibres in which “electron-dense layers” of normal elastic fibre increased in amount, although their electron density diminished. Electron-light layers were gradually diminished in quantity. Degenerated elastic fibres finally became granulo-fibrillar and were indistinguishable from colloid. Many fibrils which closely resembled 10 nm tubular microfibrils of normal elastic fibre were observed in the granulo-fibrillar substance. Since one stage of the degeneration of elastic fibre which eventually leads to the formation of colloid milium was very similar to that of actinic elastosis, a direct role of sunlight in the formation of colloid milium is suggested.

Notes: Summary Glow discharge polymerizations of allyltrimethylsilane (ATMS) and trimethylvinyloxysilane (TMVOS) were investigated by elemental analysis and infrared spectroscopy. The formed polymers were far different in elemental composition from the starting materials, and possessed high carbon and hydrogen contents. There was less difference in an infrared-spectral sense between the two polymers from ATMS and TMVOS. A polymer-forming process in a discharge state is discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract
Notes: Abstract With the help of UPS spectroscopy, it has been shown that N2O decomposes into N2 and surface Cu2O over copper catalysts in the temperature range −150, −100°C. The surface oxide oxygen dissolved into the bulk above 100°C to some extent.

Notes: Summary In adrenal medullary cells, carbachol evokes the secretion of catecholamines with simultaneous uptake of45Ca. Highly selective agonists for α2-adrenoceptors, clonidine, naphazoline, guanfacine, tramazoline and oxymetazoline inhibited carbachol evoked secretion of catecholamines in a dose-dependent manner. These α2-agonists also inhibited the uptake of45Ca evoked by carbachol with similar dose-response curve to inhibition of catecholamine secretion. On the contrary, highly selective agonists for α1-adrenoceptors, phenylephrine and norfenefrine did not inhibit the secretion of catecholamines and cellular uptake of45Ca. The inhibition by α2-agonists was not restored either by the increase in carbachol, or Ca concentrations, suggesting that the mode of inhibition was distinct from competition at cholinergic receptors or Ca-channels. It is likely that α2-agonists inhibited the secretion of catecholamines via the inhibition of Ca uptake which was probably caused through the activation of α2-adrenoceptors.

Notes: Summary Gelation of syndiotacticity-rich poly(vinyl alcohol)-phenol-water mitxture is studied. The gels were transparent differing from aqueous gels which were turbid. For the same degree of polymerization and concentration the melting point of the gel increased with increasing syndiotacticity. The dimension of a crosslink also increased with increasing syndiotacticity. The instability of the solution of syndiotactic poly(vinyl alcohol) is discussed.
