Notes: Abstract Effects of Toxoplasma gondii infection on the host immune responses were investigated at an early stage of infection. The spontaneous generation of chemiluminescence of peritoneal exudate cells was elevated as early as 1 h after infection of mice with the parasite. Significant enhancement of spontaneous chemiluminescence (CL) and increased survival after challenge with relatively virulent toxoplasma were observed in animals infected with avirulent toxoplasma 24 h previously.

Notes: Summary Kraft and ethanol organosolv lignins from Picea abies and Fagus sylvatica were carboxymethylated with bromoacetic acid. Of the total hydroxyl groups in the lignins, 60–70% were carboxymethylated. The reaction led to an increase of the number-average molecular weights. The moisture adsorption of the carboxymethylated products is about one and a half as high as that of the original lignins. There are no remarkable differences between the solubilities of the treated and untreated products.

Notes: Abstract We report on intracavity phase conjugation via resonant degenerate 4-wave mixing in atomic sodium vapor with the use of transverse optical Zeeman pumping as a versatile nonlinear mechanism. Under appropriate conditions the phase conjugate wave is found to display bistability, polarization switching and magnetically-induced selfoscillations. Our measurements are shown to be in fair agreement with theoretical predictions based on a simple analytic treatment for a homogeneously broadened coupled 4-level system.

Notes: Summary Initial single and double trisomics of S. tuberosum Group Tuberosum cv. Gineke were successfully crossed with and backcrossed to clones obtained through inbreeding of self-compatible dihaploids of the same variety. Some trisomics showed reduced flowering or flower abnormalities and contributed therefore only to a small extent. Berry-set and seed-set varied considerably. There was no relation between these phenomena, nor was there any relation between either berry-or seed-set and the identity of the extra chromosome in the female parent. Seed-set seemed to be influenced by the male parent. When a more inbred male parent was used in the crosses with trisomics this often resulted in less seed per cross. There was no clear relation between seed-set and stainability of the pollen grains, but both the strong selection for good pollen and the high level of self-compatibility, have apparently contributed to the success of the crosses. The double trisomic plants yielded less seed than most single trisomics. Only three of the single trisomics produced stainable pollen and two of them yielded progeny when used as male parent in crosses or selfings. In the progenies several of the trisomic types could be distinguished on the basis of plant morphology in the young seedling stage. For ten different trisomics the morphotype is being described. The average rate of female transmission of the extra chromosome was about twenty per cent, but there was a wide variation, both between and within the various trisomic types. The results indicated that for chromosomes 3 and 8 the rate of transmission was higher than the average value. In one out of two trisomic types male transmission of the extra chromosome occurred, with a rate of 4.7%. The possible causes for the observed differences in female transmission of the extra chromosome are being discussed.

Notes: Summary Motile cells (mast cells, granulocytes, lymphoid cells) are described in the mucosa of the cloacal urodaeum and proctodaeum of the female domestic fowl. Diffuse lymphoid tissue with lymphatic nodules occurs in the urodaeum at the ureteral ostium. Small local aggregations of lymphoid tissue can be observed in the mucosa of the proctodaeum. Cells originating from these sites penetrate the basal lamina of the epithelium and are then found between the epithelial cells. In the subepithelial layers the motile cells sometimes are in contact with each other. Mast cells (tissue basophils) form contact zones, resembling desmosomes or half desmosomes, with smooth muscle cells. In the mast cells three types of granules can be distinguished. Their ultrastructure is discussed in comparison with that in similar cells of the guinea pig.

Notes: Summary The epithela of the three divisions (coprodaeum, urodaeum, proctodaeum) of the cloaca of the hen, and of the excretory ducts (colon, ureter, vagina) which join the divisions, are described using light microscopy, and scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Each region of the cloaca has its typical epithelium. Special attention is focussed in this study on the boundaries between the different epithelia. The coprodaeal epithelium does not differ considerably from that of the colon; a transitional zone is not visible. Distinct border zones, however, are observed between the other regions (ureter — urodaeum; vagina — urodaeum and proctodaeum; urodaeum-proctodaeum; proctodaeum — cutis). Although the vaginal opening is generally thought to lie in the urodaeum, our investigations show that at the vaginal opening into the cloaca the ciliated epithelium changes, on one border to a secretory epithelium characteristic of the urodaeum and on the other border to that characteristic of the proctodaeum. These observations are discussed in relation to functional aspects.
