Notes: By combining 1 MeV high-voltage-high-resolution electron microscopy with convergent-beam electron diffraction (CBED), the crystal structure of a perovskite-related compound, Ca4YFe5O13, is determined. The crystal has orthorhombic symmetry with lattice parameters a = 5.46, b = 37.4 and c = 5.54 Å. The space group is determined to be centrosymmetric Pnma by selecting the point group from the CBED patterns. The structure images taken from two principle-axis directions, which are interpreted on the basis of the calculated images, reveal that the structure consists of a succession of the stacking of FeO6 octahedra (O layer) and FeO4 tetrahedra (T layer) and is represented by the stacking sequence of ...OTOOTOTOOTO... along the b axis repeated at intervals of 37.4 Å. It is shown that the Ca4YFe5O13 crystal structure can be described in terms of unit-cell-level twinning of Ca2Fe2O5.

Notes: The defect blocks formed in β''-alumina by electron irradiation are examined by 1 MV high-resolution electron microscopy. In order to explain the fact that two distinctly different types of defect images appear even in a single 1 MV micrograph, a new structural model is constructed in place of the two models so far reported. In the model proposed, two spinel-like blocks on either side of the eliminated conduction plane are directly combined by the vectors including x, y components to form cubic close packing of oxygen layers in the resultant defect blocks. The arrangements of cations in the defect block are slightly different from those expected from the spinel structure.

Notes: A niobium tungsten bronze crystal with a nominal composition 3 Nb2O5.8WO3 gives circular diffuse scattering in the electron diffraction pattern. The diffuse rings change shape and size when the crystal is reduced at high temperature. The observations are explained by improving the cluster model proposed by De Ridder, Van Tendeloo, Van Dyck & Amelinckx [Phys. Status Solidi A (1977), 41, 555–560]; the present clusters are composed of nine pentagonal-tunnel sites. The 1 MV high-resolution electron microscope images reveal that the clusters have several different atomic arrangements and compositions. The relation between the clusters and the micro-domains, formed in the initial stage of long-range ordering, is clarified.

Notes: Electron-induced defects in β′′′′-alumina, Na2O.3MgO.7Al2O3, are examined by high resolution electron microscopy. The phenomena can be reasonably explained in the same manner as previously done for a similar case in β′′′′-alumina [Matsui & Horiuchi (1981). Acta Cryst. A37, 51–61]; two spinel-like blocks (each having six oxygen layers) on both sides of the lost conduction plane are directly combined to form cubic close packing of twelve oxygen layers through the minimum shift vectors. The arrangements of cations in a resultant defect block are slightly different from those in the spinel lamella of the same thickness.

Notes: The modulations from the ideal crystal structures are detected for the non-stoichiometric compound YFe2O4 and related compounds such as YbFe2O〈inf/〉4, Yb2Fe3O7 and Yb3Fe4O10 through the extra reflections in the electron-diffraction patterns. Those reflections observed in YFe2O3.91 might possibly be related to the characteristic magnetic behavior denoted as `parasitic ferrimagnetism'.

Notes: Abstract Interface states in the ferroelectric-semiconductor junction have been investigated from analyses of DLTS andC-V data. Two trap levels are located at 0.21 and 0.36 eV below the conduction band near the silicon side of the interface in the MFS (Metal-Ferroelectric-Semiconductor) structure. The interface states density has been drastically reduced by putting an oxide layer between ferroelectric and semiconductor with certain heat treatment in H2 atmosphere at 500 °C. It has been found that the MFMOS (Metal-Ferroelectric-Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor) structure shows the least interface states density (less than 1011cm−2eV−1) with the maximal dielectric constant of PbTiO3 thin films.

Notes: Abstract Phase relationships in the system Si3N4-SiO2-La2O3 have been investigated after cooling from 1700° C. Two phases, 2Si3N4·La2O3 (monoclinic) and La5 (SiO4)3N (hexagonal), were identified; the other two phases in the system, LaSiO2N (monoclinic) and La4Si2O7N2 (monoclinic), were found to dissociate to La5 (SiO4)3N and a glass after cooling from temperatures above 1650° C. The unit cells of 2Si3N4·La2O3, LaSiO2N and La4Si2O7N2 have been determined and compared with those of preceding works. The results are discussed in relation to the intergranular phases observed when Si3N4 is sintered with La2O3 additions.
