Notes: Summary 1. Electric organ discharges (EOD) were measured in a wave-type electric fish,Apteronotus, with an array of electrodes. 2. The EOD waveform observed in the transient area (area where the equipotential lines converged) was a triphasic one in comparison to a biphasic one in the rest of the area. Electronic circuit simulation suggested that the triphasic waveform resulted from incomplete electrocyte synchronization within the electric organ. 3. The EOD field was obtained by computer simulation using the finite-element-method. The simulated results were used for calculation of the transepidermal potential difference distribution. This distribution is discussed with respect to sensitivity differences of electroreceptors in various parts of the fish.

Notes: [Auszug] The presence of residual entropy implies a lack of thermal equilibrium in the crystal below a certain temperature. In fact, we have observed relaxational heat-capacity anomalies of - 100 K for ordinary ice5 and 115 K for heavy ice6, and have studied the associated enthalpy relaxation by subjecting ...

Notes: Summary The case is described of a 35-year-old housewife diagnosed as having membranous lipodystrophy (as described by Nasu et al. in 1970 and called lipomembranous polycystic osteodysplasia by Hakola in 1972). The main symptom of this patient was a slowly progressive dementia. Skeletal symptoms were not seen. The computerized tomogram of the brain showed calcification of bilateral basal ganglia and the plain roentgenograms of the bones revealed cystic radiolucent areas at the distal end of the bones of the patient's extremities. Histological examination of the curetted material from the right talus revealed a ‘membranocystic’ pattern. The fatty tissue curetted from the cyst of the talus and the lysosomal enzymes of the white blood cells were biochemically normal. A possible relationship between this disease entity and connective disorders is considered.

Notes: The computer program PAAS has been in use for about two years and recently several useful features have been added, which help to predict and interpret mass spectra of peptides and their residues particularly for determining amino acid sequences.

Notes: Secondary ion mass spectra of tryptic peprides of human globin α-, β-, γ and α-chains were studied. Almost all mass peaks of protonated molecular ions of tryptic peptides were observed and they were very stable and abundant. The present results show the possibilities for quantitative analysis of two γ-globin species: Aγ and Gγ chains, and for structural analysis of unknown abnormal hemoglobins.

Notes: Field desorption mass spectra of tryptic peptides of normal human hemoglobin α-, β-, γ-, δ-chains and abnormal β-chain of hemoglobin S were studied. Almost all mass peaks of the protonated molecular ions of tryptic peptides and many doubly charged ions were observed. The molecular weights of all tryptic peptides were estimated from the mass spectra, the heaviest mass being m/z 2955, and coincided with the values obtained from the known amino acid sequences. The different chains of hemoglobin can be distinguished by their field desorption mass spectra. The mass spectrum of abnormal β-chain of hemoglobin S (sickle-cell-anemia) showed a shift of the characteristic line due to the mutation of amino acid.

Notes: This paper presents a computer program to determine all the possible combinations of amino acid residues in a peptide with a fixed molecular weight. The program can also give the sequence of a peptide using the results of PTH amino acids released by Edman degradation.

Notes: Abstract A catheter-tip pH sensor was developed for possible clinical and biomedical application, using an ion-sensitive field-effect transistor (i.s.f.e.t.). Its signal drift in buffer solutions during continuous measurement was less than 3 mV in 24 h (equivalent to about 0·05 pH in 24 h). The electric insulation was perfect when soaked in buffer solutions for more than 3 months. A continuousin vivo pH measurement was successfully achieved in nonheparinised arterial blood of a japanese monkey. There was no significant sign of clot formation for 8 hours. It revealed quick responses to respiratory acidosis and alkalosis, and the observed pH values were in accordance with those confirmed by a blood pH analyser. Also, a catheter-tip pCO2 sensor was prepared, using the catheter-tip pH i.s.f.e.t. The response time was 2 min for a 90% change in CO2 tension. The muscle pCO2 monitoring tested with it indicated a similar result to those with medical mass spectrometer.
