Notes: Summary In completion to electrophysiological studies in man auditory evoked brain stem potentials of the guinea pig were recorded by way of the far-field technique. Two age groups of albino and pigmented guinea pigs were compared with regard to several parameters of the response. The four groups showed significant differences in auditory threshold. Albinos exhibited lower thresholds and a minor hearing loss in age. Changes in response pattern could not be found as components of the aging process. Beside higher thresholds old guinea pigs showed reduced amplitudes to high-frequency stimuli. The effect of age at the peripheral stations of the auditory pathway is discussed in the lights of these results.

Notes: Summary The effects of N-methyl-formimino-methylester were studied in albino mice. Very short exposure (0.5 and 1 s) to the concentrated vapour led to an increase of the neural olfactory threshold to geraniol by a factor of 105–107. There was a slow recovery of the olfactory sensitivity and after about 40 days the threshold values returned to normal.

Notes: [Auszug] Lovelock2 first reported the presence of methyl chloride in the atmosphere at the 1-2 p.p.b. level (1 p.p.b. = 1 part in 109 by volume) and showed that its concentrations were highest in air whose origins were oceanic rather than continental. Measurements in seawater confirmed that the ocean could ...

Notes: Abstract Aldosterone, when added in vitro to defined nephron segments, dissected from adrenalectomized rabbits, restores the depressed Na+−K+-ATPase activity in the thick ascending limb of the loop of Henle and in the cortical collecting tubule within 1 h of incubation. The direct effect is specific and, as demonstrated for the cortical collecting tubule, dose-dependent. The time course of aldosterone-mediated Na+−K+-ATPase activation is compatible with the conjecture of changes in the enzyme lipid environment.

Notes: Summary Auditory brain stem responses of the guinea pig were recorded at five electrode positions located on a line from the ipsilateral to the contralateral mastoid. With monaural stimuli the amplitudes of the first two potentials had their maxima at ipsilateral recording locations, the third potential showed no significant changes at the five electrode positions, while the fourth and fifth potential had their maxima at contralateral recording sites. With binaural stimuli the amplitudes of all potentials showed a symmetric distribution with respect to the vertex. Moreover, binaural interactions could be inferred by comparing the sum of the monaural with the binaural responses. Clinical aspects are discussed in the light of these results.

Notes: Abstract In a clinical study the participation of histamine in the allergenic response of patients with food allergy was investigated. The resting levels of gastric tissue and plasma histamines of 10 patients were slightly higher than the respective values of normal volunteers. 5 minutes after local intragastral allergenic provocation a decline of the mucosal histamine content of the allergen-treated area was noticed. Parallel investigations on the mast cell content of the stomach mucosa revealed a parallel decrease of theo-phthaldialdehyde stained cells, whereas the number of toluidine blue stained cells remained unchanged. These data are in accordance with an antigen-induced IgE-dependent liberation of the mast cell histamine stores.

Notes: Abstract The relative variances in stratospheric observations of longlived trace gases CH4, N2O, CF2Cl2, CFCl3 show large differences. These differences are greatly reduced when the local mean standard deviation is normalized to the local vertical gradient. This ratio, called ‘equivalent displacement height’ exhibits a characteristic vertical profile which is very similar for all the longlived trace gases, as well as for O3. With the help of this ratio, it is demonstrated that the variances are essentially due to natural causes, i.e., transport. Using the mixing length hypothesis a theoretical expression for the equivalent displacement height is derived. From it the meridional slope of the mixing surfaces and the mixing length can be calculated as function of the altitude. Additional information is obtained on the variance of that slope. The uncertainty of the measured mean trace gas profiles is defined.

Notes: Summary Finite elastic deformations of an elastic string subjected to a vertical and a normal force are investigated, supplementing earlier results by Dickey and adding some new results, including considerations of the stability of the solutions. The relation of the solutions of the exact nonlinear theory to an approximate engineering theory of Föppl is discussed.

Notes: Summary N-methyl-formimino-methylester (MFM), a highly volatile chemical substance, causes massive, transient sensory-cell degeneration in the main, but not in the vomeronasal olfactory sensory epithelium of mice. After MFM-treatment it appears possible to study the accessory olfactory system after chemical “deafferentation” of the main system.
