Notes: Summary The collective volume of Leydig cells in prenatally pinealectomized newborn rats declined as sharply as in intact newborn rats. Also, the collective volume in pups born in the dark declined in a fashion similar to that in pups born in the light. The results indicate that neither the pineal gland nor the light is responsible for the neonatal shrinkage of Leydig cells.

Notes: Summary Multiple faceted gallstones with an internal fissure have been examined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. In vivo. the fissures probably contain only water vapor. The fissure may be produced by dehydration or water trapping during the stone formation process.

Notes: Abstract Fractionation of sulfur isotopes and selenium was measured between coexisting pyrite and chalcopyrite and between coexisting pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite from the Besshi deposit of Kieslager-type, Central Shikoku, Japan. In all the pyrite-chalcopyrite pairs studied, 34S is enriched in pyrite relative to chalcopyrite, while selenium is enriched conversely in chalcopyrite relative to pyrite. The mean △34Spy-cp value is +0.53±0.36 per mil, and the mean value of the distribution coefficient of selenium, Dcp-py, is 2.58±0.64. In all the pyrrhotite-chalcopyrite pairs studied, the two minerals are very close to each other both in sulfur isotope and Se/S ratios. The mean △34Spo-cp value is −0.08±0.16 per mil and the mean Dcp-po value is 0.99±0.05. The results have been discussed in comparison with similar data obtained for the Hitachi deposits of Kieslager-type, Japan (Yamamoto et al. 1983).

Notes: Summary The acute and long-term hypotensive effects of low doses of nifedipine, and the correlation between the fall in the blood pressure (BP) and the plasma nifedipine concentration, were investigated in patients with essential hypertension. The oral administration of nifedipine 5 mg rapidly decreased BP from 163±22/101±10 to 127±12/82±9 mmHg (mean±SD; p〈0.001), and increased heart rate from 72±8 to 76±6 beats/min (p〈0.05), plasma renin activity rose from 1.2±0.6 to 1.4±0.8 ng/ml/h (p〈0.05), and plasma nifedipine concentration was 75.6±22.0 ng/ml 30 min after administration (n=7). The nifedipine concentration was significantly correlated both with the fall in BP (r=0.410, p〈0.02, n=31) and the rise in the heart rate (r=0.412, p〈0.02, n=31). Treatment with nifedipine 5 mg t.d.s. alone or in combination either with propranolol 10 mg t.d.s., or thiazide 1 tablet daily, or propranolol and thiazide, controlled BP in 36 patients during the 22 week study period. During the long-term nifedipine therapy, the plasma nifedipine level was significantly correlated with the fall in systolic (r=0.577, p〈0.01, n=20) and diastolic (r=0.595, p〈0.01, n=20) BP. It was concluded that the plasma nifedipine concentration could be correlated with the fall in BP, and that low doses of nifedipine, either as monotherapy or in combination, were effective in the acute and long-term treatment of patients with essential hypertension.

Notes: Summary The hypotensive effect of acute and long-term, intravenous and oral administration of the calcium antagonist, diltiazem, was investigated in 8 normotensive volunteers and 55 patients with essential hypertension. Diltiazem i.v. infusion of 45 mg/h (0.5 mg/min, then 1.0 mg/min, each for 30 min rapidly decreased both blood pressure (BP) from 164±22/98±8 to 144±15/86±9 mmHg (mean±SD) and total peripheral resistance from 32.6±8.4 to 25.3±5.4 mmHg/l/min (p〈0.001), and increased stroke volume from 58.2±9.5 to 64.2±8.6 ml/beat (p〈0.05). It altered neither heart rate nor cardiac output in the hypertensives (n=10). Oral diltiazem 60 mg rapidly decreased BP from 155±10/103±6 to 142±12/90±8 mmHg after 3 hours (p〈0.01/p〈0.001) in hypertensives (n=8), but not in normotensives (n=8). Diltiazem 90 mg p.o. decreased BP from 157±15/102±9 to 129±13/83±8 mmHg (p〈0.01) in hypertensives (n=15), and reduced the heart rate from 71±8 to 65±8 beats/min (p〈0.01). The drug did not change plasma renin activity either in normotensives or hypertensives. The fall in diastolic BP was correlated with the plasma diltiazem concentration (r=0.910, n=6, p〈0.05). Long-term treatment with diltiazem 30mg t.d.s. decreased BP from 163±12/104±8 to 145±9/88±9 mmHg (p〈0.001, n=13), and 60mg t.d.s. decreased BP from 169±15/102±6 to 148±13/87±8 mmHg (p〈0.001, n=8), and significantly reduced the heart rate (p〈0.01) in hypertensives. Thus, the hypotensive action of diltiazem, which is due to arterial dilatation, is effective, either on intravenous or oral administration, during acute and long-term treatment of essential hypertension.

Notes: An effective method for reducing the formation of curd in canned salmon is described. The process consists of applying an aqueous extract of papaya latex powder to the surfaces of raw salmon segments prior to conventional vacuum seaming and heat sterilization. It is based on the idea that large curd-forming proteins, once reduced to peptide and polypeptide fragments, will no longer coagulate when heated. A substantial reduction in curd formation was achieved in canned coho and sockeye salmon.

Notes: Summary This study was performed employing cytogerontologic analysis to investigate the in vitro proliferative capacity of the fibroblasts of scar and normal dermis obtained from the same individual. Scarderived fibroblasts had a shorter in vitro lifespan, longer cell population doubling time, diminished cell numbers at confluency and lower percentages of cell able to incoporate 3H-thymidine than comparable firoblasts derived from normal dermis. These results may indicate that the growth characteristics of scar-derived fibroblasts resemble those of late-passage levels of normal dermal fibroblasts.

Notes: Summary Hamster embryos in utero on the 11th or 12th day of gestation were treated simultaneously with aminopyrine (Ap) and sodium nitrite (NaNO2) by oral administration of the compounds to the mothers by stomach tube. For measurement of induction of 8 AG-resistant mutations, the embryonic cells from treated and control mothers were cultured in MEM plus 10% FBS for 72 h and then selected in medium containing 10 or 20 μg/ml of 8 AG. The number of 8 AG-resistant colonies was markedly increased after co-administration of Ap and NaNO2, and slight induction of mutations was also observed in cells from mothers given NaNO2 alone. This treatment also caused morphological or malignant transformation of cultured cells. About 5-to 6-fold increase in the number of transformed colonies was observed in cells from mothers given Ap plus NaNO2. Cells from the transformed colonies produced tumors when implanted into the cheek pouches of young golden hamsters. These tumors were diagnosed as pleomorphic fibrosarcomas. Similar results were obtained with cells from embryos treated transplacentally with NDMA as positive controls. A single transplacental oral application of Ap at 200 mg/kg or of NaNO2 had only slight biological actions to the cultured embryonic cells. NDMA was produced in the stomach of animals treated simultaneously with Ap and NaNO2. A small amount of NDMA was also detected in the stomach after a single dose of NaNO2.
