Notes: We have investigated the effect of cooling rate, followed immediately after the isothermal annealing, on the magnetic properties of melt-spun Fe88Zr7B4Cu1 alloy. As the cooling rate is increased, the effective permeability, 2×104, improved by 50% on annealing at around 650 °C. The remanence ratio is also found to concomitantly decrease with the increasing cooling rate. The increase of permeability and decrease of remanence ratio are consistent with the expected suppression of the induced magnetic anisotropy. From an analysis of the transmission electron microscopy micrographs, and the x-ray diffraction spectral intensities, we find that the volume fraction of the amorphous matrix to that of the nanocrystallized magnetic entities to be about 20%, at which the permeability has the maximum value for this system. Scanning electron microscopy and antiferromagnetic investigations show a much smoother surface morphology with a finer grain distribution in the rapidly quenched sample. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We compared the dose–response relationship and the neuromuscular blocking effects of mivacurium during infusions of esmolol in 40 anaesthetised rabbits. Train-of-four stimuli were applied every 10 s to the common peroneal nerve and the force of contraction of the tibialis anterior muscle was measured. Plasma cholinesterase activity decreased by 13% after esmolol infusion. The ED95 of mivacurium increased significantly from 29 (4.8) μgkg−1 with placebo to 61 (9.8) μgkg−1 during esmolol 100 μgkg−1.min−1, 49 (8.2) μgkg−1 during esmolol 300 μgkg−1.min−1 and 54 (7.3) μgkg−1 during esmolol 500 μgkg−1.min−1, respectively (p 〈 0.001). The duration of neuromuscular block with mivacurium 0.16 mgkg−1 was prolonged by 30% with esmolol due to diminished plasma cholinesterase activity (p 〈 0.05). Heart rate and mean arterial blood pressure decreased by 15% with esmolol (p 〈 0.05). The results of this study show that, in rabbits, esmolol decreased plasma cholinesterase activity, antagonised the neuromuscular blocking potency of mivacurium and prolonged its neuromuscular blocking effect.

Notes: Abstract. Two cases of rare lymphoepithelial cyst (LEC) of the pancreas are presented. Although the histogenesis of this lesion is not known, it can be histologically differentiated from other pancreatic and retropancreatic cysts. The importance of its recognition is in the distinction from cystic neoplasm of the pancreas.

Notes: Abstract. We report a case of fetus-in-fetu located in the scrotal sac of a newborn male infant. Plain radiography (including specimen radiography), ultrasonography and MRI clearly demonstrated vertebral column, ribs, skull, pelvic bones, femurs and a portion of tibiae and humeri. The diagnosis was confirmed by pathological examination.

Notes: Very large-scale motions in the form of long regions of streamwise velocity fluctuation are observed in the outer layer of fully developed turbulent pipe flow over a range of Reynolds numbers. The premultiplied, one-dimensional spectrum of the streamwise velocity measured by hot-film anemometry has a bimodal distribution whose components are associated with large-scale motion and a range of smaller scales corresponding to the main turbulent motion. The characteristic wavelength of the large-scale mode increases through the logarithmic layer, and reaches a maximum value that is approximately 12–14 times the pipe radius, one order of magnitude longer than the largest reported integral length scale, and more than four to five times longer than the length of a turbulent bulge. The wavelength decreases to approximately two pipe radii at the pipe centerline. It is conjectured that the very large-scale motions result from the coherent alignment of large-scale motions in the form of turbulent bulges or packets of hairpin vortices. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Significant improvements have been achieved in the accuracy and reliability of broadband frequency-swept (FM) reflectometer measurements on DIII-D. This has been achieved through several improvements, the most important of which has been the application of digital complex demodulation (CDM) analysis software, which can extract signal phase with subfringe accuracy. Using this new analysis technique, results from the broadband FM system look very promising: reflectometer measurements show excellent agreement with Thomson profiles in Ohmic and H-mode plasmas, and good agreement with Thomson data in L-mode. Clear resolution of the steep edge density profile in H-mode plasmas, where very small phase shifts are involved, confirm the accuracy of the system calibration and performance. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Divertor density profiles, asymmetries, turbulence, and MARFE diagnosis are extremely important and affect the divertor design process for ITER and other future devices. In addition, a functioning divertor density profile system will be essential for the operation of these machines. It is thus critical to prototype and demonstrate diagnostics capable of operating in a divertor environment. To meet these needs a divertor reflectometer system has been designed and installed on DIII-D. The design stresses flexibility, modularity, and simplicity. It consists of a circular, smoothwall, overmoded waveguide followed by a TE11⇒HE11 mode converter (the HE11 mode is a low loss Gaussian mode with a very symmetric radiation pattern, optimal for this use) thus allowing use of an arbitrary polarization (fpe,fLH,fRH). The design provides for testing of a variety of antennas/probing directions including: upward to probe the X-point region, including MARFEs, sideways to probe outboard/inboard divertor legs, and oppositely directed to probe both divertor legs simultaneously. System design, operational considerations, and experimental data are presented. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.
