    Notes: Summary Specimens of human adipose tissue were cultured for one week with or without the addition of insulin. The basal as well as the noradrenaline-stimulated lipolysis were enhanced in the explants cultured with insulin, showing that the long-term effect of the hormone is lipolytic. However, an acute antilipolytic effect of insulin could be demonstrated in these explants in the subsequent short-term incubations. The basal rate of glucose incorporation into the lipids was enhanced in the explants cultured with insulin. When insulin was added in the short-term incubations these explants did not further respond to the hormone while this was the case with the explants cultured without insulin. Thus, it seems that prolonged exposure to insulin leads to a diminished acute effect of the hormone on glucose metabolism. However, the same explants responded to the antilipolytic effect showing that insulin was able to bind itself to the membrane. The activities of hexokinase (HK), glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH), pyruvate kinase (PK) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) were increased in large fat cells both in freshly excised tissue and in the cultured explants. However, the activity of phosphofructokinase (PFK) did not correlate with the cell size. The presence of insulin during the culture period enhanced the activities of G6PDH, PK, and LDH, while this was not found for HK or PFK. The data thus suggest that the metabolic capacity of human fat cells is enhanced by long-term exposure to insulin. Although enzyme induction could be shown for G6PDH, PK and LDH it seems unlikely that this is of importance for the increased rates of glucose metabolism in these explants since the rate-limiting enzymes, HK and PFK, were not increased. Most probably, then, this stimulating effect of insulin is exerted on the membrane and the rate of glucose transport.

    Notes: SUMMARY. In Lake Erken there is a regular phytoplankton peak at ice-breakup in the spring. Pechlaner (1970) studied the spring outburst of 1960. We carried out a similar study in 1973, when the climatic factors were completely different, with only 10 cm of ice and almost no snow. Thus, due to light penetration, there was a high phytoplankton biomass under the ice as early as March. Stephanodiscus astraea (Ehr.) Grun. and Asterionella formosa Hass. dominated the biomass during the spring development in 1973 instead of the normally dominating S. hantzschii v. pusillus Grun.The nutrient decrease was slower in 1973 than in 1960. A comparison of carbon assimilation and the decrease of nitrate and phosphate indicate sufficient nutrient supply in 1973. In 1960, the population grew logarithmically until the nutrients became limiting. In 1973, the average biomass was greater, but the mean probable primary production was only half that of 1960. From the activity coefficients for the 2 years it is also clear that, in 1960, S. hantzschii v. pusillus was highly productive during its short but intensive growth period. Its minute size and high surface/volume ratio enabled it to take up nutrients rapidly and efficiently. The chlorophyll content of S. astraea in 1973 was only half as much as that of S. hantzschii v. pusillus in 1960. Since the light conditions under the ice in March 1973 were more unfavourable than during the exponential phase of 1960, production was much lower.

    Notes: Summary For supplementary weaning foods, Faffa (Ethiopia), Incaparina (Guatemala), Superamin (Egypt) and Sekmama (Turkey), were studied with regard to protein quality. Three different methods for protein quality evaluation were used. 1. Chemical analysis of the essential amino acid content. Amino acid scoring of the results indicated that the sulphur-containing amino acids were limiting in Faffa (77%); lysine, threonine and isoleucine in Incaparina (77–75%); threonine in Superamin (80%) and threonine and the sulphurcontaining amino acids in Sekmama (90%). 2. Standardized nitrogen balance procedure using laboratory rats. The net protein utilization of the four weaning foods were all in the range 56–70%. Methionine supplementation (1 g/100 g protein) did not significantly improve the biological value of the test diets, but resulted in marked decreased levels of blood urea nitrogen (except for Incaparina), and decreased urinary excretion of urea nitrogen compared to total nitrogen excretion (except for Superamin). 3. Single meal plasma amino acid responses in healthy young adults. The responses of the essential amino acids after test meals with the four weaning foods were all within a range considered to indicate a well balanced supply of dietary amino acids, except for marginal deficits of methionine after the Faffa test meals, and isoleucine after the Incaparina test meals.
