Notes: Summary Plasma renin could be detected in 16 nl of rat plasma by incubating at 50°C, pH 6.2 with 20 μl of a rat renin substrate. In 60 nl samples it could be estimated and differences in concentration of 20% could be detected. Plasma renin concentration was measured in blood from the superficial efferent arterioles of a rat's kidney. The concentrations of renin in different efferent arterioles of the same rat were similar. The renin concentration of efferent arteriolar blood was 361±189 (S.D.) ng Al ml−1 (blood) hour−1 which was not different from the renin concentration of simultaneously taken femoral artery blood (340±217). Plasma renin concentration can be measured in efferent arteriolar blood and will allow the control of renin secretion to be studied.

Notes: Summary The excretion of the diuretic substance DADMP (2.4-diamino-6.7-dimethylpteridine) and of DMP (6.7-dimethylpterin) was studied on single nephrons of the rat kidney using microperfusion and microinjection techniques. In the proximal tubule only DADMP was reabsorbed to a significant degree. Fractional reabsorption rate was independent of the load applied and the permeability constant was found to be 2.2·10−4 cm·s−1. Similar results were obtained in nephrons in which the substances, with inulin, were injected from middle proximal tubular puncture sites and recovered in the urine. DMP appeared in the urine quantitatively and simultaneously with the injected inulin. DADMP recovery, however, was only 20–30% of the injected load during the injection period and after 2 h some 70% was recovered from the urine of both kidneys. The reabsorbed fractions were independent of the loads applied, which varied between 2·10−13 mol·min−1 and 10−9 mol·min−1. A comparison of the microperfusion and the microinfusion data suggests that the reabsorption of DADMP occurs predominantly in the proximal convolution, and it appears that the differences between the renal handling of DMP and DADMP are explicable by their different lipid solubilities.

Notes: Abstract A new and efficient procedure for testing a pair of digraphs for isomorphism is developed. It is based on conducting a depth-first search on one of the digraphs followed by a systematic matching of edges using backtracking with very effective pruning. It is proved that for digraphs (ofn vertices) the expected time complexity of this procedure isO(n logn ). This theoretical result is verified empirically on more than 300 large random digraphs. This procedure is shown to be more efficient than any of the existing general isomorphism procedures.

Notes: Summary The effects of apomorphine on psychotic symptoms were evaluated in chronic schizophrenic patients using double-blind placebo controlled procedures. Although on the basis of dopamine theory of schizophrenia, apomorphine was expected to increase schizophrenic symptoms, in this study apomorphine substantially reduced psychotic symptoms in some chronic schizophrenic patients. No patient showed the substantial increase in psychotic symptoms previously demonstrated after the administration of IV methylphenidate. These clinical effects of apomorphine in schizophrenia may be relevant to recent pharmacological research which has indicated that apomorphine also has potent effects on presynaptic dopamine neurons, in addition to its previously described postsynaptic receptor stimulation.

Notes: Summary Rats who where administered apomorphine seven days after termination of chronic treatment with haloperidol had significantly (59%) lower level of brain HVA than saline control rats. This finding is consistent with the behavioral evidence suggesting supersensitivity of post-synaptic dopamine receptors after termination of chronic haloperidol.

Notes: Abstract We compare average values of solar wind stream amplitude, maximum velocity and half-width for periods shortly after the minima preceding Solar Cycles 20 and 21. The differences between average amplitudes and half-widths are not significant, but higher maximum velocities were observed for streams during the early part of Cycle 21. Comparing with previously published results, we conclude that, except for the large streams seen late in the solar cycle, the variation of these stream parameters is nearly as large from cycle to cycle as it is within a solar cycle.

Notes: Abstract Simultaneous soft X-ray spectroscopic and broad band imaging observations of an active region have been analyzed together to determine the parameters which describe the coronal plasma. From the spectroscopic data, models of temperature-emission measure-elemental abundance have been constructed which provide acceptable statistical fits. By folding these possible models through the imaging analysis, models which are not self-consistent can be rejected. In this way, only the oxygen, neon and iron abundances of Pottasch (1967), combined with either an isothermal or exponential temperature-emission measure model are consistent with both sets of data. Contour maps of electron temperature and density for the active region have been constructed from the imaging data. The implications of the analysis to the determination of coronal abundances and to future satellite experiments are discussed.

Notes: Abstract We examine the relationship between coronal hole evolution and solar active regions during the Skylab period. We find a tendency for holes to grow or remain stable when the activity nearby, seen as calcium plages and bright regions in X-rays, is predominantly large, long-lived regions. This is consistent with results of previous studies, using somewhat different methods. We also find that there is a significantly higher number of small, short-lived active regions, as indicated by X-ray bright points, in the vicinity of decaying holes than there is near other holes. We interpret this to mean that holes disappear at least in part because they become filled with many small scale, magnetically closed, X-ray emitting features. This interpretation, together with the previously reported observation that the number of X-ray bright points was much larger near solar minimum than it was during the Skylab period, provides a possible explanation for the disappearance of the large, near-equatorial coronal holes at the time of solar minimum.
