    Notes: Summary The thermomechanical behaviour of a particle composite was evaluated under the assumption that a boundary interphase between the matrix and the filler particles develops, upon the thermomechanical properties of which the overall behaviour of the composite depends. This interphase exists in reality and it contains both areas of adsorption interaction in polymer surface layers onto filler particles as well as areas of mechanical imperfections. Under the assumption that the interphase is homogeneous and isotropic exhibiting perfect adhesion with both main phases a theory was developed providing quantitative means of assessing the adhesion efficiency between the phases and its effect on the thermomechanical behaviour of the composite. Experimental results are in good agreement with theoretical predictions.

    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé Une équation intégrale du type de Cauchy singulière le long d'un intervalle fini réel et avec une fonction pondérante ayant des singularités complexes aux extremités de l'intervalle d'intégration peut être résolue numériquement par réduction à un système d'équations linéaires, en utilisant une règle appropriée d'intégration numérique associée aux polynômes de Jacobi, exactement de la même manière que dans le cas des singularités réelles. La façon la plus appropriée de trouver la solution numérique de cette équation telle qu'elle se présente dans les problèmes de fissure en élasticité plane et d'évaluer les facteurs de contrainte aux extremités da la fissure est la méthode d'intégration numérique de Lobatto-Jacobi.
    Notes: Summary A Cauchy type singular integral equation along a finite real interval and with a weight function with complex singularities at the end-points of the integration interval can be numerically solved by reduction to a system of linear equations, by using an appropriate numerical integration rule associated with the Jacobi polynomials, in exactly the same way used for the case of real singularities. For the numerical solution of such an equation arising in plane elasticity crack problems and the evaluation of stress intensity factors at crack tips, the Lobatto-Jacobi numerical integration rule is the most appropriate.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Es wird das ebene elastostatische Problem eines symmetrischen gegabelten Risses für den unendlichen, isotropen und mit senkrecht zur Riss-Hauptachse belasteten Körpers untersucht, und zwar unter Anwendung der Methode der komplexen Potentiale. Das Problem wird auf ein Systen von drei singulären Integralgleichungen reduziert und weiter auf ein System linearer Gleichungen transformiert, vermittelst einer Näherung der Integrale mit Hilfe des leicht lösbaren numerischen Quadraturverfahrens von Gauss und Lobatto. Die Spannungsintensitätsfaktoren in den Spitzen des gegabelten Risses werden rechnerisch ermittelt und mit experimentellen Ergebnissen verglichen.
    Notes: Summary The plane elastostatic problem of a symmetrically branched crack in an infinite isotropic body loaded by normal stresses perpendicular to the main crack axis at infinity was studied by using the method of complex potentials. The problem was reduced to a system of three singular integral equations. By means of an approximation of the integrals through the Gauss and Lobatto numerical quadrature procedures, these singular integral equations were transformed into a system of linear equations, which can be readily solved. The stress intensity factors at the tips of the branched crack were computed directly from the solution of the above system of linear equations and were compared with the already existing experimental solutions.

    Notes: Summary A previous study (1) on the thermomechanical behaviour of metal-filled Epoxies led us to conclude that the concept of the boundary interphase is a very useful tool for describing quantitatively the quality of adhesion between the matrix and the filler particles. It was shown that this interphase exists in reality and is an area between filler and matrix, which contains both areas of adsorption interaction in polymer surface layers into filler particles, as well as an area of mechanical imperfections. In the present paper, under the assumption that the interphase is homogeneous and isotropic, exhibiting perfect adhesion with both main phases, a theory was developed to describe the thermomechanical behaviour of this interphase. Thermal expansion coefficients and volume fraction of the interphase of a large number of composites were determined and the effect of various parameters, such as temperature, volume fraction of filler and particle size, were examined for specimens exhibiting imperfect as well as perfect adhesion between matrix and filler.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Es wird das Verhalten während der Polymerisation von reinen und plastifizierten Epoxydpolymeren in einem Doppel-Schubversuch mit einer gleichzeitig wirkenden Normalspannung untersucht. In dieser experimentellen Untersuchung wird der Reibungswinkel ermittelt und seine Abhängigkeit von der Belastung und der Polymerisationszeit festgelegt. Als Reibungswinkel wird definiert der Winkel, dessen Tangente das Verhältnis der Schubspannung zu der Normalspannung darstellt, bei welchem ein Bruch des Verbundes bei dem Doppel-Schubversuch auftritt. Die ebenen Flächen der aus plastifizierten Epoxydpolymeren bestehenden Schubprobekörper sind durch dünne Schichten von plastifizierten Epoxydpolymeren verbunden. Die Schubkraft, die einen Bruch des Verbundstoffes zwischen den Schubprobekörpern unter der Wirkung verschiedener Normalkräfte hervorruft, wird gemessen. Das System wird in verschiedenen Zeitabständen während des Polymerisationsprozesses, angefangen beim Gießen bis zum Ende der Polymerisation des Verbundstoffes, belastet. Aus den Versuchen werden sowohl die Abhängigkeit der Schubkräfte, die zu einem Bruch des Verbundstoffes führen, von den Normalkräften wie auch die Abhängigkeit des Reibungswinkels von der zum Bruch führenden Schubspannung ermittelt sowie der Einfluß des in der Mischung vorhandenen Anteils an plastifizierendem Material und der Polymerisationszeit untersucht. Die Ergebnisse finden sowohl bei der Untersuchung von mehrschichtigen als auch von nicht vollständig polymerisierten Systemen Anwendung.
    Notes: Summary The behaviour of pure and plasticized epoxy polymers submitted to double shear and a simultaneous normal stress is studied with respect to time, during the period of polymerization. In this experimental investigation the angle of friction was studied and its dependence on the loading conditions and the polymerization time was measured. As angle of friction is defined the angle whose tangent expresses the ratio of the shear stress rate to the applied normal stress rate, necessary to fracture the bond in a double shear test. Thin layers of plasticized epoxy polymers were used to cement together the plane surfaces of identical shear specimens made of plasticized epoxy polymers. Various amounts of plasticizer were added in these cements and the shear force was measured, necessary to brake the bonds between cemented beams held together by normal forces of different amounts. The shear forces were applied at different times as the polymerization of the cement progressed from zero time during casting, up to the end of the polymerization process. Nomograms derived from these measurements expressing the variation of the shear force versus the normal force for failure of the bond as well as the friction angle versus the shear stress for fracture disclosed the influence of the amount of plasticizer and the polymerization time on these quantities. These results may be applied for the study of multilayer systems as well as to systems only partly polymerized.

    Notes: Summary The dynamic mechanical properties of a class of plasticized epoxies were investigated over a wide temperature range by means of a Rheovibron Viscoelastometer. Master curves for storage and loss moduli were produced by means of the frequency-temperature superposition principle, as well as for relaxation modulus by a conversion formula. The effect of plasticizer percentage on the said parameters, as well as the loss peaks, corresponding toγ andα relaxations was investigated.

    Notes: Abstract A method is presented for the numerical inversion of Mellin transforms in which the inverse is obtained as an expansion in terms of Laguerre polynomials. The coefficients of this expansion are obtained as linear combinations of values of the transformed function or, equivalently, in terms of forward differences of this function. Thus, the Mellin transform of the series can be written as a forward interpolation series. Consequently the error of the numerical inversion procedure can be estimated. The practical advantage of the method is that values are needed for real arguments only.
