    Notes: A dynamic rescaling method is used to simulate numerically the dynamics of a collapsing wave packet in three-dimensional Langmuir turbulence, governed by the vector Zakharov equations. Subsonic and supersonic regimes are considered. For a large class of initial conditions with a single maximum for the field intensity, the collapse is found to be nearly self-similar and weakly anisotropic, while in the subsonic or near subsonic limit the electric field may develop strong anisotropy at early times and break apart into two peaks.

    Notes: Summary The thermomechanical behaviour of a particle composite was evaluated under the assumption that a boundary interphase between the matrix and the filler particles develops, upon the thermomechanical properties of which the overall behaviour of the composite depends. This interphase exists in reality and it contains both areas of adsorption interaction in polymer surface layers onto filler particles as well as areas of mechanical imperfections. Under the assumption that the interphase is homogeneous and isotropic exhibiting perfect adhesion with both main phases a theory was developed providing quantitative means of assessing the adhesion efficiency between the phases and its effect on the thermomechanical behaviour of the composite. Experimental results are in good agreement with theoretical predictions.

    Notes: Abstract A theoretical model for the evaluation of the elastic modulus in particulate composites has been developed. The method takes into account the existence of a mesophase between main phases, which constitutes an important parameter influencing the behaviour of a composite material. This layer between the matrix and filler develops different physico-chemical properties from those of the constituent phases and variable ones along its thickness. The effect of the progressive variation of the elastic modulus of the mesophase on the modulus of the composite was estimated by applying various simple laws of variation. Convenient laws of variation were introduced, varying from a simple one, assuming a linear law, to a more refined one using a parabolic law. Experimental results with particulates, based on iron-filled epoxy composites, compared satisfactorily with other models. However, the model based on a parabolic law was superior to all others on physical grounds.

    Notes: Abstract We consider a system of interacting diffusions. The variables are to be thought of as charges at sites indexed by a periodic one-dimensional lattice. The diffusion preserves the total charge and the interaction is of nearest neighbor type. With the appropriate scaling of lattice spacing and time, a nonlinear diffusion equation is derived for the time evolution of the macroscopic charge density.

    Notes: Summary A previous study (1) on the thermomechanical behaviour of metal-filled Epoxies led us to conclude that the concept of the boundary interphase is a very useful tool for describing quantitatively the quality of adhesion between the matrix and the filler particles. It was shown that this interphase exists in reality and is an area between filler and matrix, which contains both areas of adsorption interaction in polymer surface layers into filler particles, as well as an area of mechanical imperfections. In the present paper, under the assumption that the interphase is homogeneous and isotropic, exhibiting perfect adhesion with both main phases, a theory was developed to describe the thermomechanical behaviour of this interphase. Thermal expansion coefficients and volume fraction of the interphase of a large number of composites were determined and the effect of various parameters, such as temperature, volume fraction of filler and particle size, were examined for specimens exhibiting imperfect as well as perfect adhesion between matrix and filler.

    Notes: Summary The role of the boundary interphase on the adhesion efficiency between fiber and matrix in the case of polymers reinforced with unidirectional fibers was investigated. A theoretical model was introduced considering that the composite material consists of three phases; that is, the fiber, the matrix and the interphase, material which is the part of the polymer matrix lying at the close vicinity of the fiber surface. The interphase material, having different physical properties from those of the bulk matrix, affects the overall behavior of the composite. Moreover, the quality of adhesion between the two main phases depends greatly on the nature of the interphase material. In this study we have considered that the interphase material is inhomogeneous in nature, with properties varying continuously from the fiber surface to the bulk matrix. The theory developed resulted in a criterion of the adhesion quality and in a prediction of the longitudinal modulus of elasticity of the fiber-composite.

    Notes: Abstract Water absorption in particulate composites at ambient temperature influences their thermomechanical properties. Second Fick's law of diffusion was used in this paper to predict the diffusion coefficient of the composite materials tested. In all cases the matrix material was a diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A polymer cured with 8 phr triethylene tetramine and filled with iron particles with an average diameter 150 μm at five distinct volume fractionsv f =0, 0.05, 0.10, 0.16 and 0.20. The modification of the modulus of elasticity, ultimate stress, breaking strain and breaking energy due to moisture absorption was examined. Moreover, differential scanning calorimetry was used to study the influence of the time exposure into water and the filler concentration of the particulates on their glass transition temperature. Finally, the void occupancy in the composite was evaluated from free volume considerations.
