Notes: Abstract In an investigation ofT=7/2 analogue states in51V the50Ti(p, γ) excitation curve has been measured for proton bombarding energies 1280–1480 keV and 2340–2660 keV. From the (p, γ) resonances 29 new virtual levels in the region of 9316–9510 keV excitation energy in51V were determined. The strong resonance atE p=1 371 keV has been identified as the isobaric analogue state of the51Ti ground state by determining spin and parity of this resonance to be 3/2−. There is no evidence for a strong analogue resonance in51V corresponding to the 1.16 MeV p 1/2 state in51Ti. The γ-decay of the p 3/2 analogue state has been studied by measuring branching ratios and angular distributions of primary γ-transitions with a Ge(Li) detector.M1E2 mixing ratios have been determined for these transitions. The total width of the resonance for γ-decay is found to be Γγ=1.6±0.4 eV. New bound levels in51V have been introduced at 3576, 4651 and 4661 keV excitation energy. TheJ π values of the 3085, 4770, and 4863 keV states are determined to be 5/2−, 5/2−, 3/2−, respectively. The analogue-antianalogueM1 transition strength is found to be considerably reduced compared to the situation ins-d shell nuclei.

Notes: Summary Investigations on the microbial modification of sucrose to the corresponding 3-keto-derivative were carried out with resting cells of Agrobacterium tumefaciens NCPPB 396. This highly specific oxidation to yield the 3-keto-derivative has been analysed kinetically with varying substrate and cell mass concentrations. The formation of the corresponding 3-keto-derivative depended strongly on the reaction time and the aeration rate, and was maximal at aeration rates up to 11.5 volume air/cultivation volume per minute with resting cells. The product formation increased with increasing substrate concentrations. However, the product yield was maximal at substrate concentrations below 20 g/l. Data pertaining to the production of active cell mass as well as for maximal 3-keto-derivative formation are presented in this paper. Also included are some applications for these derivatives.

Notes: Summary The kinetics and equilibria of cephalosporin C adsorption on different commercial adsorbents were investigated. Adsorption isotherms could be analysed according to the Brunauer, Emmett and Teller theory. For the interpretation of adsorption kinetics it was necessary to develop a more complex model comprising both a rapid and a slower step. An integrated approach combining kinetics and equilibria allowed for simulation of the experimental data and can be used as a basis for predicting technical approaches such as fluidized-bed technology.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Berichtet wird über den ungewöhnlichen Verlauf eines Morbus Whipple.
Notes: Summary An unusual course of Whipple's disease is reported. All clinical symptoms disappear with antibiotic therapy. Multiple control biopsies show a high grade and progressive collagen formation of the stratum proprium mucosae which takes places especially in the pericellular region and near the epithelial basal membrane. The number of lymphocytes, plasma cells and interepithelial lymphoid round cells is increased considerably. Immunologically the serum complement (C3-fraction) is decreased. Immunohistologically subepithelially and interepithelialy situated cells are found after incubation with the patients serum showing a cellular-cytoplasmatic fluorescence with anti-complement. These findings are discussed as a hyperreactive mechanism possibly leading to induction of a cellular immune process.

Notes: Summary Microbial modification of the disaccharide isomaltulose to 3-keto-isomaltulose by resting cells of Agrobacterium tumefaciens was investigated with respect to kinetics and yield. After optimization of the reaction conditions, yields of about 90 % were achieved. This specific oxidation was also applied to derivates of isomaltulose (sugar alcohol, amino alcohol).

Description / Table of Contents: The thermal polymerisation of styrene produces small amounts of dimeric and trimeric adducts as by-products. For pure styrene, these are mainly saturated, cyclic compounds. Kinetic investigations show that two independent reactions occur: in the first, 1.2 - diphenylcylobutanes are produced by cycloaddition, whilst in the second, four saturated trimers are formed from an intermediate DIELSALDER adduct, as postulated by MAYO.

Notes: During the development of atherosclerotic and fibromuscular proliferates/lesions, smooth muscle cells (SMC in the media, particularly near the lumen, are activated to migrate into the intima, where they continue to proliferate to form an intimal thickening. It is to date unclear whether SMCs situated adjacent to the adventitia possess a lower capacity to proliferate because they are a special subpopulation of medial SMCs or because the adventitia excerts an inhibitory effect. We have, therefore, developed an in vitro system whereby we have attempted to clear up this uncertainty. The following observations were made from the in vitro experiments:Media-explants from rabbit aorta were laid on a polycarbonate filter with pores 5 μm in diameter. The SMCs migrated through the pores and formed a fibromuscular proliferate on the other side of the filter.Endothelial cells were seeded on one side of the filter before media-explants were laid on the other side of the filter. The confluent endothelium inhibited migration of SMCs through the filter pores.Media-explants were placed between two polycarbonate filters (pores 5 μm diameter). In this “sandwich” arrangement SMCs migrated through both filters, i.e., in both directions. The quantity of migrating and proliferating cells through both filters was almost identical. This suggests that there is no difference in the migratory and proliferate capacity of SMCs in the inner and outer layers in the media of arteries. To investigate the influence of the adventitia on medial SMCs, media-explants were placed between a lower (5 μm) and an upper (0.2 μm) filter adventitia-explants were laid above the media-explants. The 0.2 μm filter prevented migration of SMCs from the media-explant into the adventitia and migration of fibroblasts from the adventitia into the media. Interestingly, the adventitial tissue inhibited proliferation of SMCs at the abluminal and migration and proliferation at the luminal side of the media-explant; the number of cells migrating through the 5 μm pores at the luminal side was diminished, suggesting that the adventitial tissue has an antiproliferative influence on SMCs. Moreover, it was found that in media-explants near the filter with adventitia, the medial SMCs were in a better preserved condition than at the de-endothelialised luminal side.As a control, cultures consisting of media-explants were incubated without filters (i.e., explant organ cultures). The proliferates in the concavity (luminal side) exhibited a pattern of proliferating SMCs different from that of the cells at the abluminal convexity. This finding indicates that the different texture of vessel walls near the adventitia and near the lumen may also influence cell migration and proliferation.
