Notes: In an investigation of 541 members of a hospital cleaning department, a prevalence rate of occupational skin diseases of 15.3% was found. During their hospital employment, 39.1% had it skin disease. Higher prevalence in the younger age groups can be explained by the selection of those with skin diseases for work away from the cleaning department. A large number developed their disease shortly after employment began. This was an indication that the observed prevalent conditions were irritant diseases. The distribution by diagnosis confirms this conclusion in as much as 75% of the occupational skin diseases were irritant dermatitis, 21% allergic contact dermatitis, and 4% monilia of the finger webs. The causes of allergic contact dermatitis were found to be formaldehyde, glutaraldehyde and chloramine in addition to nickel and rubber. Among the causes of irritant dermatitis were detergents, alkaline substances, acids and sodium perborate as well as hypochlorite, and hypobromite combinations. In order to reduce occupational skin diseases among cleaning personnel, it is necessary to extend both local and more general prophylactic measures.

Notes: Summary 1. The development of taste hairs and tactile hairs of the fly Protophormia terraenovae is described using light microscope, scanning, and transmission electron microscope methods. 2. The development of taste hairs proceeds in the same way on tarsi, labella, and wings. First the dendritic outer segments of ciliary origin become visible above the hypodermal cell surface [2 days after pupariation (AP) at 19° C]; then the dendritic sheath starts growing out and finally the trichogen process follows. In a typical intermediate stage (‘stage C’) the distal sections of the dendrites float freely in the fluid surrounding the pharate adult. The more proximal sections are enclosed by the dendritic sheath around which the trichogen process is wrapped (4 days AP). The protruding dendrites disappear when the cuticle starts being deposited on the fully grown trichogen process, and the sheath vanishes later (9–10 days AP or 1 day before eclosion). The development is discussed with respect to the known structural organization of the adult hair. 3. In the tactile hairs the single dendrite which grows outwards is completely covered by the dendritic sheath and lies beside the trichogen process [stage C(m)]. 4. The taste and tactile hair development proceeds in the same way on legs isolated from the pupa after disc eversion in an artificial medium containing ecdysterone. 5. To check that both these patterns of development are widespread the development of taste and tactile hairs of the first instar cercus of the cricket Acheta domestica was studied with the light microscope: Both hair types pass through identical early stages.

Notes: Summary Normal and diabetic rats were given daily injections of human growth hormone for four days (5 mg per rat per day). Injected rats showed no differences from uninjected controls with respect to kidney weight or renal content of protein, RNA or DNA. Kidney weight increased by 7% after two days of diabetes and by 20% after four days, but growth hormone caused no augmentation of the hypertrophy. It is concluded that growth hormone plays no role in the initiation of diabetic renal hypertrophy.

Notes: Abstract We report on a female newborn baby with a “myopathic” stiff face, open mouth, high-arched palate, microgenia, generalized muscular hypotonia, limited extension of elbows, wrists and knees, flexed adducted thumbs, velopharyngeal insufficiency, and hypertrichosis. Death occurred at 3 months due to respiratory insufficiency. Muscular biopsy revealed myopathic abnormalities.

Notes: Summary Renal hypertrophy in rats with streptozotocin diabetes or after unilateral nephrectomy was studied by sterological techniques. — After 4 days of diabetes total glomerular volume had increased by 30%, and after 47 days by 43%. Glomerular growth was more pronounced than whole kidney growth during the first 4 days, but subsequently whole kidney growth exceeded glomerular growth. In control rats glomerular volume was 4.9% of total kidney volume; after 4 days of diabetes it was 5.4% and after 47 days 4.1%. — Proximal tubule length increased from 366 m/kidney in control rats to 447 m/kidney after 47 days of diabetes; tubular luminal diameter increased from 26.8 μm to 31.4 μm in the same rats. Tubular length and luminal diameter were, however, not increased after 4 days of diabetes. — In unilaterally nephrectomised rats there was no early rapid glomerular growth. Glomerular fractional volume was 4.9% in controls, 4.4% at four days, and 4.2% at 24 days after nephrectomy. — The results indicate a disturbed glomerulo-tubular balance in the early phases of diabetic renal hypertrophy.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die Lumineszenzspektren der Verbindungen Crha6J3, Crha 6 * J3 (ha* = Deuteroharnstoff), Cr3+∶Mha6J3 und Cr3+∶Mha6(ClO4)3 (M∶Al, Ga) werden bei Stickstofftemperatur und der Temperatur des flüssigen Heliums untersucht.
Notes: Abstract The luminescence spectra of the compounds Cr ur6I3, Cr ur 6 * I3 (ur* = deuterated urea), Cr3+∶M ur6I3 and Cr3+∶M ur6(ClO4)3 (M∶Al; Ga) are studied at temperatures of liquid N2 and He. With the He-Ne-laser as excitation source, the4 T 2-level will be excited. The splitting of the2 E-level will be discussed. It results in two zero-phonon transitionsE 1/2→4A2;E 3/2→4 A 2. From isotope effect and a comparison with IR-data, the side bands can be assigned to the excited vibrations of the ground level4 A 2. In mixed crystalls Cr3+∶Ga ur6I3 an important splitting of the chrom dublett at longer wavelengths would be observed.

Notes: Abstract The present paper deals with the low-temperature polarized absorption spectra of single crystals Ti3+∶Al(ur)6X3 (X∶Cl, Br, I), Cr3+∶Al(ur)6 (ClO4)3 und Cr(ur)6I3 in the wavelength range from 7500 Å to 3500 Å. The crystal point group isD 3d , the metal ions occupy sites ofD 3 symmetry. Experimental values of the cubic parameterDq and the trigonal parametersν andν′ are reported. The hexaureatitanium(III)-complexes are strongly Jahn-Teller-distorted in the2E excited state. The distortion in the ground state is likely to depend on the anion.
