Notes: The evaporation and solution morphologies of ZnO single crystals have been investigated. In the case of solution etching, using HCl, the {00.1} surface develops etch pits with sharp rims while for the {00.\overline 1} surface, etch-pit rims are unstable. Similar effects are found for evaporation near 1035°C. As the evaporation temperature is increased to near 1200°C, however, the {00.\overline 1} surface becomes increasingly complex before assuming a more stable habit at still higher temperatures. Both {10.\overline 2} and {11.\overline 2} planes are developed on the {00.\overline 1} surface, but the corresponding planes on the {00.1} surface are not observed. (The development of second order pyramidal planes is also observed in vapor grown needles from ore-processing furnaces).

Notes: Summary Sixty children aged between one month and fifteen years were submitted to RIHSA cisternography and/or ventriculography for a variety of lesions affecting the CSF pathways. These included cases of hydrocephalus and other congenital malformations of the central nervous system, posttraumatic and post meningitic sequelae. The investigation has been found to be valuable not only in differentiating between arrested and progressive hydrocephalus but also in unmasking associated anomalies of CSF flow and pathways in cases of meningomyelocele and encephalocele. It is excellent for delineating a CSF fistula and can also be utilised to demonstrate the size and extent of a subdural hematoma or hygroma. Pathological concentration and delayed clearance of the isotope in the region underlying the skull defect was a consistent finding in all cases of growing fracture (craniocerebral erosion). Single or multiple sites of blocks were observed in cases of postmeningitic (tuberculous) sequelae.

Notes: Summary Peripheral venous blood from man, muntjac, and cattle were grown in medium (1) containing different serum (human AB+/FCS/autologous), (2) without serum or antibiotics (penicillin and streptomycin), or (3) without both serum and antibiotics to investigate to what extent certain essential culture components used in in vitro mammalian cell cultures affect the incidence of spontaneous sister chromatid exchanges (SCEs). The observation that exclusion of only serum from culture medium enhanced the frequency of SCEs whereas exclusion of both serum and antibiotics, which influence the cell cycle kinetics to a great extent, exhibited the lowest frequency of SCEs reported so far for lymphocyte cultures, indicates that the frequency of so-called spontaneous SCEs usually observed in normal lymphocyte cultures grown in medium supplemented with serum and antibiotics is in fact an elevated frequency.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Zwei Bevölkerungsgruppen in Assam (Indien) wurden untersucht.
Notes: Summary Two groups in Assam (India) were examined. Among 80 Khasi (Bhoi subgroup), an austroasiatic tribal group, there were 41% HbE carriers; and in 82 Ahom, a group related to the Thai population, 58% of HbE carriers were found. This high prevalence of HbE in groups with ethnic relations to Southeast Asia supports the contention that the HbE gene was introduced to India from that area.

Notes: Abstract The properties of a system of bosons interacting through a two body potential composed of a hard repulsive core followed by an attractive square well and having density of the order of that of liquid4He at theλ-point have been studied. The system is found to have a peculiar behaviour around 1 K and we assert that it may have undergone another phase transition around 1 K. Calculations on the effective mass show that them */m values lie between 2 and 9 so that the interacting bosons may have a transition temperature below 1 K. We have also plottedE k vs.k graph for temperatures below 1 K.

Notes: Abstract The oxidation kinetics of CuFeO2 in the Cu-Fe-O system have been studied between 500 and 900° C in an atmosphere containing 1 vol% oxygen in a nitrogen stream using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). It was found that addition of Fe2O3 to the CuFeO2 caused a decrease in the oxidation rate while addition of CuO caused an increase. On increasing the concentration of Fe2O3 the activation energy was found to increase from ~ 18 kcal mol−1 to ~ 45 kcal mol−1 and the exponent ‘n’ in Avrami's equationf=1-exp (−kt n) was also observed to increase, from 1.3 to 2.3. On adding CuO to the CuFeO2 in the Cu-Fe-O system the activation energy decreased from ~ 18 kcal mol−1 to ~ 8 kcal mol−1. The variation in both values indicates changes in the oxidation mechanisms. The microstructural changes associated with oxidation have been studied using optical microscopy. A model has been proposed to explain the results.

Notes: Abstract The direct and alternating current electrical conductivities of lanthanum chromite ceramic doped with 1 to 3 wt% TiO2 have been measured at temperatures from 20 to 200° C. The sample containing 3 wt% TiO2 has been studied in detail because of all the samples it showed the highest sintered density and electrical conductivity. Alternating current conductivity, σ ac, measurements taken over the frequency range 10 kHz to 1 MHz were found to follow a power law of the form σ ac ∝ ω n , where ω is the frequency and 0.5〈n〈1, indicative of a hopping conduction mechanism. In addition, a dispersion in the dielectric constant was observed. The dispersion peak frequency has been found to be thermally activated with an activation energy of 0.423±0.002 eV. The results are successfully interpreted in terms of a model proposed by Pike, wherein a classical hopping of charge carriers (over a potential barrier) between the localized states is considered. The direct current conductivity activation energy predicted from this model is found to be consistent with the experimentally obtained value.
