Notes: [Auszug] This fact is contrasted by sparse data on their function. Farooqui and Huehns9 have obtained oxygen dissociation curves on nucleated erythroblasts of human embryos which contained more than 30% embryonic Hbs, and found no significant difference compared with the oxygen-binding properties of human ...

Notes: [Auszug] The oxygen-binding characteristics of hagfish haemoglobin offer an opportunity to obtain information on the evolution of the respiratory function of haemoglobin. It seems4"10 that hagfish haemoglobin, unlike all known haemoglobins of higher vertebrates which carry four haems per molecule, has only ...

Notes: Abstract Using thick targets the continuous X-ray spectra arising in the collision systems Al+p (0.5–7 MeV), Si+p (0.6–6 MeV), Si+14N (6 MeV, 14 MeV), Ti+p(1 MeV) and Ti+14N (14 MeV) were measured by means of a Si(Li) detector. Total yields were derived and compared with numerical results of calculations for secondary electron and nuclear bremsstrahlung. For Si and Ti the continuous spectra from one and the same target bombarded with protons and14N ions of equal velocity were investigated. Drastic deviations from theZ 1 2 scaling have been found. They could be attributed to contributions of MO radiation originating by recoil of target atoms. The influence of characteristic line profiles on the measured spectra is also discussed.

Notes: Abstract K-shell X-ray production cross sections of Si, Ti, Cu and Ag were measured for incident protons,4He and14N ions in the energy range of 0.17≦E 1/A 1≦2 MeV/amu. The experimental ionization cross sections are compared with calculations according to the simple Plane Wave Born Approximation (PWBA) theory as well as the corrected PWBA model (PWBABC). Strong deviations of the experimental cross sections from theZ 2 1 scaling are observed and discussed quantitatively.

Notes: Abstract About 160 mutants of Schizosaccharomyces pombe with altered activity of the nonspecific acid phosphatase located on the cell surface were isolated. The following kinetic parameters were determined by automatic techniques on the mutants: (1) residual activity vs. wild type, (2) K m , (3) V max , (4) optimal pH, (5) percent pH curve. The ability of the various parameters to discriminate between genetic variants was investigated by applying to the results a suitable statistical quantitative index, R (resolving power), previously defined by us. The last two parameters had least resolving power, whereas the first three had about equal resolving power. This was found to be consistent with current concepts of enzyme and protein structure. These results could serve as guidelines in the choice of biochemical parameters for the study of polymorphisms in systems not previously investigated. Moreover, they provide information about the relative effects on the various parameters of mutations which give rise to the genetic variants and also about the molecular nature of mutations occurring at different loci involved in the control of acid phosphatase in S. pombe.

Description / Table of Contents: Securing screws of stainless steelsThe author emphasizes the importance of screwed connections in technology and discusses the conclusions which must be drawn from existing standards with respect to the utilization of stainless steel screws. Examples are shown to demonstrate the corrosion resistance of such connections (tests in sea water, 3% NaCl, tap water, salt spray) giving prominence to the problems resulting from the use of spring elements (crevice corrosion danger).

Description / Table of Contents: Allowable limits for loads under heads of fasteners out of stainless austenitic chromium nickel steels. Safety and load carrying capacity of fastened joints are determined through the strength of the fasteners, the pressure under the head and nuts which can be endured without plastic deformations and the variation of the actual preload. The strength of screws of stainless steels are known with its variations since long time. The allowable pressure under the head and nut of fasteners for the various austenitic chromium steels in the solution annealed and cold formed condition are not known so far. The result of such investigations for the important austenitic chromium steels are published herewith. The now known loadability limits must be recognized. After loading above these limits a recreational effect was observed for which interpretations and explanations still have to be found.
