Notes: Summary We consider difference methods for the solution of singular perturbations of boundary value problems. The solutions are smooth except in boundary layers of thickness ε|logε|, 0〈ε≪1. Various difference schemes with a uniform stepsizeh are considered. In practice,h is usually much larger than the boundary layer regions. Then the difference methods must be choosen with care. It is shown that only approximations of low order accuracy can be used. However, one can increase the accuracy by a Richardson procedure. Asymptotic expansions in powers ofh and ε are given for the solutions of the proposed methods.

Notes: Summary In the postoperative phase the laboratory supports the doctor in monitoring (and perhaps influencing) the vital functions, the postoperative therapy, the specific functions which may be affected by the basic condition or the operation performed, the prevention of complications, and finally the patient's rehabilitation. The necessary information is obtained from physical, physicochemical, hematological, hemostasiological, and clinicochemical tests. The main value of clinicochemical tests lies in the insight they allow into the state of specific functions. Estimation of blood cholesterol has proved to have surprising prognostic value in the assessment of rehabilitation.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Durch percutane Messungen der Strömungsverhältnisse in den frontoorbitalen Endarterien der Aa. ophthalmicase — Aa. supratrochlearis et supraorbitalis — mit Doppler-Ultraschall lassen sich etwa 90% aller hämodynamisch wirksamen Lumeneinengungen der A. carotis ohne genauere Lokalisation unblutig diagnostizieren.
Notes: Summary Percutaneous measurements with Doppler ultrasound techniques over the supratrochlear and supraorbital arteries — both terminal branches of the ophthalmic artery — may detect a stenosis in the carotid artery with a probability of 90% without giving the exact location. Subtotal or complete obstructions are diagnosed to an even higher percentage. The technique requires systematic compression of the superficial temporal, facial, and common carotid arteries, the last over 3 to 5 cardiac cycles. An average of the flow signals over 30 cardiac cycles complements the acoustic impression and the flow velocity directly registered. Flow pulse waves and mean latency of the systolic ascent in regard to the R peak of the ECG become visible. The circle of Willis compensates for most of the asymptomatic subtotal or total obstructions. If an additional much less obstructive process in the contralateral carotid artery occurs, there may be neurological symptoms originating in the hemisphere the carotid artery of which was not primarily affected. During an examination severe obstructions are indicated by pathological flow signals and pathological reactions on systematic compression of external carotid artery branches and the ipsiand contralateral common carotid artery. They are diagnosed with very high reliability, even if there is a contradiction to the clinical findings. From 350 cases 4 patients were found with asymtomatic severe obstructions or with clinical symptoms pointing to the uninvolved hemisphere. The Doppler findings are demonstrated and compared with a normal case.

Notes: Summary The relationship between $$P_{GO_2 }$$ , $$P_{aO_2 }$$ , local blood flow, and the activity of individual chemoreceptor fiber units of the cat's carotid body was studied during changes in the arterial oxygen partial pressure and the arterial systemic blood pressure. The following results were obtained: 1. In the normal physiological range $$P_{GO_2 }$$ follows $$P_{aO_2 }$$ almost linearly. 2. The curves of neuronal activity depending on $$P_{aO_2 }$$ or $$P_{GO_2 }$$ have different shapes. 3. Hypoxia and hyperoxia change the relationship between $$P_{aO_2 }$$ and $$P_{GO_2 }$$ as well as the relationship to the neuronal activity. When returning to normal conditions, the initial relationship is re-established. 4. Considerable changes in local flow do not change local tissue $$P_{O_2 }$$ and do not influence the neuronal activity.
