Notes: Abstract The present paper deals with the isolation, and chemical and serological characterization of the O-antigens (lipopolysaccharides, LPS) of the photosynthetic gram-negative bacterium Rhodopseudomonas viridis. The LPS are extractable with hot phenol/water, but unlike the phenol-soluble LPS of the closely related species Rhodopseudomonas palustris, the R. viridis O-antigens are preferentially extracted into the water phase. A mixture of phenol/chloroform/petroleum ether (PCP-method) does not extract the R. viridis LPS. All R. viridis LPS investigated belong to the same chemotype, the polysaccharide moiety of these O-antigens being composed of 3-O-methyl-l-xylose, 3-O-methyl-d-mannose, d-mannose, d-galactose, d-glucose, in addition to 2-keto-3-deoxyoctonate (KDO), glucosamine, 6-deoxyglucosamine (quinovosamine) and galactosamine uronic acid. The R. viridis O-antigens are clearly distinguishable from the l-glycero-d-mannoheptose containing O-antigens of R. palustris by the lack of this sugar (and of any other heptose) in the R. viridis LPS. The lipid moiety (lipid A) of the R. viridis O-antigen can be split off from the LPS by mild acid hydrolysis. Like lipid A from R. palustris, it differs remarkably from the well known lipid A of Enterobacteriaceae, in that d-glucosamine is replaced by a recently identified 2.3-diamino-2.3-dideoxyhexose in the R. viridis and R. palustris lipid A. Unlike enteric lipid A the R. viridis lipid A is phosphate-free and includes as the only fatty acid β-C14OH which is exclusively amide-linked. All R. viridis strains belong to the same serotype so far as investigated, as shown by passive hemagglutination with the isolated O-antigens and rabbit antisera against heat-killed cells.

Notes: Abstract The crystal structure of Si5O[PO4]6 has been determined and refined by least-squares, using three-dimensional X-raydata fromWeissenberg photographs: space group R 3;a=7.869 andc=24.138 Å;Z=3; 418 independent reflections;R=6.0%. The crystal structure consists of isolated [SiO6] octahedra and [Si2O7] groups which are linked by [PO4] tetrahedra forming a three-dimensional network. The average interatomic distances are: Si[6]−O=1.768, Si[4]−O=1.607 and P−O=1.52i Å. The compound is isotypic with Ge5O[PO4]6.

Notes: Abstract Germanates of composition Ca2Al[AlGeO7] and Ca2Ga[GaGeO7] have been synthesized and studied by means of single-crystal photographs. The compounds crystallize with melilite structure and form a continuous solid solution. The intensity calculation for the first-named phase indicates a statistical Al/Ge-distribution, analogous to the Al/Si-distribution in gehlenite, Ca2Al[AlSiO7].

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Es wird über ein 5jähriges Mädchen mit G/G-Translokation im Mosaik berichtet (9,3% Zellen mit 2 n=46,XX,G-,t(GqGq)+).
Notes: Summary A 5 year old girl is described with a translocation G/G in a mosaic (9,3% cells with 2 n=46,XX,G-,t(GqGq)+). The intelligence of the child was rather high (EQ 0,8). Though a great number of the typical symptoms of mongolism were observed, they were mostly but faintly marked. The dermatoglyphics were changed in the way typical for mongolism.

Notes: Abstract The optical constants of the alkali metal rubidium have been measured in the wavelength region from 0,3 to 2,4 μ in the solid and liquid state at temperatures between 195 and 313 °K, by analysing intensity and polarisation of the monochromatic radiations reflected by the surface of the metal. These mirrorlike surfaces, free of any contamination and not distorted by any treatment, were prepared and measured in ultrahigh vacuum. The purity of the metal was checked by measuring the residual resistance at liquid helium temperatures. The values thus obtained forn,k, ɛ1=n 2−k 2 and ɛ2=2nk, listed in tables, and their temperature dependence permit the determination of 1. the frequency of the volume-plasmaoscillation, 2. the core polarizability, 3. the optical mass, 4. the optical conductivity resp. relaxation time, 5. and to separate the temperature dependent “Drude”-absorption from other temperature independent absorption mechanisms, particularely the interband absorption. Values of the reflectivity for perpendicular incidence and of the penetration depth are determined and given.

Notes: Abstract Optical transmission, reflexion and absorption of thin films of the alkali metal rubidium were measured as a function of thickness for ∥ and ⊥ polarised monochromatic radiations having wavelenghts between 3000 and 6000 Å, incident from the vacuum side as well as from the quartz-support side at angles of 45 ° and 30 ° resp. The films were prepared by evaporation in static ultrahigh vacuum (∼ 10−10 Torr) onto a cooled (90 °K) smooth surface of a thin, plane-parallel plate of polycrystalline quartz. The thickness of the slowly condensing films was varied continuously from zero to some thousand Angström-units corresponding to the bulk metal. The results obtained permit the identification of the volume- or the surface-character of the different plasma oscillations and, in the latter case, the surface they are attached to, the determination of their resonance frequency and a quantitative analysis of their developement with increasing film thickness.

Notes: Abstract The optical constants of the alkali metal cesium have been measured in the wavelength region from 0.3 to 2.5 μ in the solid and liquid state at temperatures between 90 and 302 K, by analysing intensity and polarisation of the monochromatic radiations reflected by the surface of the metal. These mirrorlike surfaces, free of any contamination and not distorted by any treatment, were prepared and measured in ultrahigh vacuum. The purity of the metal was checked by measuring the residual resistance at liquid helium temperatures. The values thus obtained forn,k, ɛ1=n 2-k 2 and ɛ2=2nk, listed in tables, and their temperature dependence permit to separate quantitatively the absorption due to different absorption mechanisms and to determine some of the quantities describing the behaviour of the free electrons.

Notes: Abstract Optical transmission spectra in the region of the volumeplasma-frequencyω p were measured for ⊥ polarized radiations incident on thin potassium films either from the vacuum (front) side at an angle of 45° or from the quartz-support (back) side at about 32°±2° according to wavelength. The films were prepared by evaporation in static ultra-high vacuum (∼10−10 Torr) on a smooth surface of a thin, plane-parallel platelet of polycrystalline quartz cooled either to 10 K or to 80 K, their thickness being exactly measured by means of the Langmuir-Taylor ionisation method. The minimum of the transmission curves givingω p was found independent of thickness for films condensed at 10 K, but decreasing in the same thickness region with decreasing thickness for films condensed at 80 K. This variation as well as the differences between the values of ωp determined by various authors are attributed to varying degrees of surface roughness of the films used.
