Summary In 21 functionally nephrectomized dogs Na-S35-thiosulfate as extra-cellular indicator was administered in equal concentrations in blood and CSF (by means of a combined ventriculo-cisternal and subarachnoidocisternal perfusion). The concentration of electrolytes and the osmolarity of the perfusion fluid have been individually equilibrated to the CSF of the animals. Following 30–45, 90, 180 and 270 min of perfusion; samples of tissue from varions brain areas as well as plasma and CSF were taken in order to estimate the isotope concentrations as well as the water and electrolyte contents. By mean of this new method it could be shown, that the distribution space of thiosulfate amounts to 9.3% in the Cortex, 13.3% in the N. caudatus, 9.5% in the medulla, 8.5% in the white substance and 11.9% in the cerebellum. Control values of extracellular space measurement in heart and skelettal muscle amounted to about 22.2% respectrely 10.2%. The calculation of the avarage brain intracellular electrolyte concentrations showed, that although the cellular potassium concentration aggrees with that of heart and muscle, the sodium and chloride concentrations are essentially higher in brain cells. The question to discuss is if all brain cells have such a high sodium and chloride concentration or if they are only present in glia cells.
