Notes: Summary Vertical velocities at the 800, 600 and 400 mbar surfaces over India have been calculated, making use of a 3-level geostrophic baroclinic model. Further, the effects of non-adiabatic heating is included into the model and vertical velocity due to diabatic heating is obtained for the same period. A numerically obtained vertical velocity field due to baroclinicity and diabatic heating is seen to be in agreement with the observed weather patterns.

Notes: Summary With a view to examine the effect of pre-sowing exposure of seeds to gamma radiation (3000 r) on the drought resistance behaviour of barley plants (Hordeum vulgare L., Var. K12), a pot-culture experiment was conducted at a glasshouse attached to the Department of Plant Physiology. The plants were subjected to wilting treatments at tillering stage and were maintained so for ten days. Subsequently, observations on survival capacity, growth behaviour and physiological changes were made during the wilting period. The data obtained were subjected to statistical analysis. Reduction in soil moisture causes a set-back in the physiological status of barley plants and thereby inhibits the crop growth. Presowing exposure of seeds to gamma-radiation induced drought tolerance in barley plants. It not only improved the growth behaviour but also maintained an active metabolism in plants even under wilting condition. Although the investigation is of preliminary nature, but it certainly offers newer scope of research towards useful utilization of gamma radiation in relation to drought tolerance in crops.

Notes: Summary A pot-culture experiment was undertaken to assess the physiological significance of ascorbic acid in relation to drought resistance in two high-yielding varieties of rice — Taichung Native — 1 and I.R. 8. The soil-moisture stresses were maintained at 7–10 and 15–20 per cent moisture at field capacity. The wilting treatments were given only at tillering and shooting stages. Observations pertaining to survivality of rice plants and determinations of ascorbic acid, acorbigen and ascorbic acid utilization in fresh leaves were made. The two varieties of rice,i.e. Taichung Native-1 and I.R. 8 were not identical in their drought tolerance. Taichung Native-1 was more drought resistant which may be presumed in view of their differences in morphological make-up and demand for water at different stages of growth. The leaves of Taichung Native-1 showed greater contents of ascorbic acid and ascorbigen following increased rate of ascorbic acid utilization as compared to I.R. 8. These values were significantly reduced during shooting stage, a critical period to drought. This confirms the significance of ascorbic acid towards drought resistance in plants with special reference to rice.

Notes: Abstract The sulphur nutrition of three isolates ofAlternaria tenuis Auct., isolated from the diseased leaves ofMangifera indica L.,Musa paradisiaca L. andPsidium guajava L., was studied. They were grown on the medium devoid of sulphur as well as on media containing various sources of sulphur viz., ammonium sulphate, sodium hyposulphite, sodium thiosulphate, magnesium sulphate, potassium sulphate, potassium metabisulphite, zinc sulphate and thiourea. Sodium hyposulphite, sodium thiosulphate, magnesium sulphate, potassium sulphate and zinc sulphate were generally found to be satisfactory sources for the growth of all the isolates under study. Poor growth of the different isolates was observed on the medium devoid of sulphur.

Notes: Abstract Three isolates ofA. tenuis isolated from the diseased leaves ofMangifera indica l. Musa paradisiaca l. andPsidium guajava l. were investigated. They were grown on different sources of nitrogen viz., potassium nitrate, sodium nitrate, calcium nitrate, ammonium nitrate, sodium nitrite, ammonium sulphate, ammonium chloride, glycine, DL-valine, L-glutamic acid, urea, thiourea, L-asparagine and peptone. They were also grown on the medium lacking nitrogen. A wide variation was observed in the growth and reproduction of the different isolates. The growth of all of them was good on potassium nitrate, calcium nitrate, glycine, DL-valine, L-glutamic acid, L-asparagine and peptone but the sporulation was satisfactory on calcium nitrate only. Sodium nitrite supported moderate growth of banana leaf isolate whereas there was no growth of the other two isolates. None of the organisms could grow on the medium lacking nitrogen as well as on thiourea. The results obtained with the isolates under study have been compared with those of earlier investigators and it has been clearly established that the different isolates ofA. tenuis could show marked differences in their nitrogen requirements.
