Notes: Abstract Phytoplankton photosynthesis was estimated by a simulation model of the Fraser River estuary (Canada). For this estimation, two kinds of information were considered; (1) the photosynthetic response of phytoplankton taken from the estuary to each environmental factor; (2) actual measurement of changes in each environmental factor in the estuary. As the major limiting factors, light intensity, temperature, and nitrate were taken into account. Variations in these parameters were combined together under the assumption of the “law of the minimum”; that is, only one of the environmental factors was considered to limit photosynthesis at any given time and place. From the results obtained, it could be shown which environmental factors actually limited phytoplankton photosynthesis in the Fraser River estuary at different times of the year and at different depths.

Notes: Abstract Glucose uptake was measured at three different stations in the northwestern Pacific Ocean. The measurements were made at various temperatures (5° to 35°C) and glucose concentrations (3 to 100 μg glucose/l). The uptake of almost all samples taken from the surface to 1,500 m was affected primarily by temperature. The temperature dependence of samples from near the transition region between the Kuroshio and the Oyashio current waters was twice as large as that of both current samples. Furthermore, the samples from the former, transition, region and the aphotic samples of the latter, current, regions showed an optimal temperature 15° to 30°C higher than the in situ temperature; the optimal temperature was only 5° to 10°C higher in the photic samples of the stable region. The average potential glucose uptake at/near the optimal temperature was 0.026 μg glucose/l/h in the photic zone and 0.015 μg glucose/l/h in the aphotic zone. However, after correction by the in situ temperature, the uptake was 0.024 and 0.003 μg glucose/l/h, respectively.

Notes: Summary Neurological and electrophysiological examination of 15 workers handling acrylamide in a factory revealed abnormal signs of peripheral nerve functions in all cases. Neurological abnormalities were: absent deep reflexes, decreased superficial sense and suppressed vibration sense. Action potentials in median nerve and tibial nerve were greatly reduced while conduction velocity was not greatly affected. Long-experienced workers had various complaints with ataxic gait and showed abnormal EEG.

Abstract: Zusammenfassung Die Vertebralis-Angiogramme von 30 Patienten mit Acusticus-Neurinomen wurden ausgewertet.
Notes: Summary Vertebral angiograms in 30 surgically proven acoustic neurinomas are reviewed and arterial and venous abnormalities are analyzed in detail. Previously described angiographic abnormalities are confirmed including displacement and non-visualization of the anterior inferior cerebellar artery and the petrosal veins. In addition arched displacement of the superior cerebellar artery and the marginal artery is emphasized as an important finding in these tumours. Description is given of an abnormal vein which is enlarged and displaced posteriorly in an arcuate fashion over the mass. This unnamed abnormal vein offers one of the most important findings in the diagnosis of acoustic neurinomas. It is concluded that acoustic neurinomas of more than 2.0 cm in diameter can be diagnosed accurately by vertebral angiography and important additional information for surgical removal can be obtained.

Description / Table of Contents: Résumé Les auteurs rapportent six cas rares de méningiome orbitaire primitif.
Notes: Summary Six cases of primary orbital meningioma, a rare condition, are presented. These tumours provoke bone changes, chiefly increased bone density, in the same way as intracranial meningiomas. Orbitography and orbital venography provide complementary diagnostic information. Arteriography, the most widely used and rewarding investigation, may confirm the presence of an intraorbital lesion by revealing pathological vessels and tumour staining. The most reliable criterion in the preoperative diagnosis of primary intraorbital meningioma is agreement between the appearances of the plain radiographs and those of the angiogram.

Notes: Summary An unusual case of arteriovenous communication between the ascending pharyngeal artery and the sigmoid sinus is described. The patient had pulsatile tinnitus and bruit over the left mastoid. The symptoms regressed spontaneously without therapy. This was documented by subsequent angiography.

Abstract: Zusammenfassung Bericht von zwei Fällen, mit sphenoethmoidalen Mucocelen.
Notes: Summary Two cases of sphenoethmoidal mucocele are reported and the plain reoentgenologic findings are discussed. It is emphasized that multiple curvilinear deformities of the bony walls of the paranasal sinuses affected are the most important roentgenologic sign. Careful interpretation of tomograms is essential in the evaluation of these lesions.
