    Notizen: Application of near-field optical second harmonic microscopy to nanometer scale crystal and strain analysis of thin polycrystalline ferroelectric films is described. The near-field signal is shown to be sensitive to local crystal orientation by experimental and theoretical studies of polarization properties of second harmonic generation from a poled single crystal of BaTiO3. Spatial resolution of the order of 80 nm has been demonstrated by recovery of the local poling direction of individual ferroelectric domains in polycrystalline thin Pb(ZrxTi1−x)O3 films. Near-field strain induced second harmonic generation from thin BaxSr1−xTiO3 films has also been studied, and an agreement between theory and experiment has been established. Thus, the technique described provides a tool for nanometer scale crystal and strain analysis of polycrystalline samples. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: A La0.7Ca0.3MnO3−δ single crystal was oxygen-plasma treated at 200 °C. Our electrical and magnetic measurements indicate that the oxygen-plasma treatment can be an effective low temperature method of oxygen stoichiometry modification of colossal magnetoresistance manganites. The oxygen plasma is also shown to introduce structural defects, whose effects are prominent near the Curie temperature (Tc), giving rise to anomalies in the resistivity and magnetic behaviors. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: A two-step rf plasma oxidation technique of an insulating layer has been performed to enhance electrical and structural properties of magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) devices. Comparison was made by analyzing properties of the MTJ oxidized by conventional rf and two-step rf plasma oxidation methods. Experimentally observed results give improved surface imaging and sufficient oxygen contents of the insulating layer under the two-step oxidation method. In addition, electrical breakdown voltage and magnetoresistance of the MTJ were increased from 0.7 to 1.8 V and from 4.5% to 6.8%, respectively, correlated with improved structural information. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Gamma irradiation was used to reduce the N-nitrosamines and residual nitrite in model system sausage during storage. Aerobic or vacuum packaged sausage was irradiated at 0, 5,10, 20, and 30 kGy. The residual nitrite levels were significantly reduced by gamma irradiation, and, in vacuum packaging, the reduction was dose dependent. The N-nitrosodimethylamine of the sausage irradiated at 10 kGy or above reduced in aerobic packaging, while a dose of 20 kGy was needed in vacuum packaging. The N-nitrosopyrrolidine reduction was found at 20 and 30 kGy-irradiation. Results indicated that high dose irradiation (〉 10 kGy) was needed to reduce the carcinogenic N-nitrosamine and nitrite levels in pork sausage during storage.

    Notizen: : The 21 peptides purified from the bitter fraction of tryptic hydrolysates of soybean 11S glycinin by using gel-permeation high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and a series of 3 C18 reverse phase (RP)-HPLC were in the molecular weight range of 200-1400 Da and showed mostly the hydrophobicity of less than 1400 cal/mol. Although the primary structures of the bitter peptides from 11S glycinin were not exactly the same as those of the proglycinin, many bitter peptides were basic mimics of the common structure, indicating the significance of the primary structure of a peptide playing a role in the bitter taste perception.

    Notizen: This study was performed to investigate the neurochemical characteristics of the vagal ganglia of the goat by immunohistochemical methods using calbindin D-28k (CB), calretinin (CR), parvalbumin (PA), substance P (SP), calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and galanin (GAL) antibodies. In the proximal vagal ganglia (jugular ganglia), CGRP- (57.1%), SP- (48.2%), GAL- (8.6%), PA- (8.7%), CB- (8.5%) and CR-like (5.3%) immunoreactive cells were observed. In the distal vagal ganglia (nodose ganglia), CGRP- (40.5%), SP- (30.2%), CB- (22.0%) and CR-like (18.1%) immunoreactive cells were present. The double immunohistochemical study showed, that in the proximal vagal ganglia, CGRP immunoreactivity was co-localized in SP- (84.8%), GAL- (100%), CB- (5.6%) and CR- (5.7%) immunoreactive cells; SP immunoreactivity was co-localized in the CGRP- (80.0%), GAL- (100%), CB- (5.3%) and CR- (5.6%) immunoreactive cells; GAL immunoreactivity coexisted in the CGRP- (4.4%) and SP- (19.8%) immunoreactive cells, but not in calcium-binding proteins (CBP)-immunoreactive cells; PA immunoreactivity was absent in the CGRP- and SP-immunoreactive cells; CB and CR immunoreactivities were seen in the CGRP- (0.8%) and SP-immunoreactive (0.9%) cells. On the other hand, in the distal vagal ganglia, CGRP immunoreactivity appeared in SP- (66.6%), CB- (1.0%) and CR- (1.2%) immunoreactive cells; SP immunoreactivities were observed in the CGRP- (44.1%), CB- (1.0%) and CR- (1.2%) immunoreactive cells; CB immunoreactivities were present in the CGRP- (0.5%) and SP- (0.8%) immunoreactive cells; CR immunoreactivities were contained in the CGRP- (0.5%) and SP- (0.8%) immunoreactive cells. These findings indicate that the goat is distinct from other mammalian species in the distribution and localization of neurochemical substances in the vagal ganglia, and suggest that these differences may be related to physiological characteristics, particular those of the ruminant digestive system.

    Notizen: Recent in vitro and in vivo studies have shown that glucocorticoids have a profound influence on the survival of hippocampal neurones, and that the depletion of glucocorticoids as a result of adrenalectomy (ADX) reduces nerve growth factor levels in the hippocampus. It is also believed that ADX is associated with the seizure susceptibility of the Mongolian gerbil. In the present study, the choronological changes of c-jun immunoreactivity were investigated after ADX in the hippocampal formations in the seizure-prone gerbil model. In the sham hippocampus, c-jun immunoreactivity was not observed in the neurones of the hippocampus proper and dentate gyrus. C-jun immunoreactive neurones appeared 3 h after ADX in the neurones of the CA1 area and dentate gyrus, and these immunoreactivities peaked 24 h after ADX and then gradually decreased. These results suggest that, in the adrenalectomized gerbil, c-jun may be expressed in the neurones of the hippocampus in compensation for glucocorticoid deficit. The result of enhanced c-jun expression of the hippocampal formation provides anatomical support for the hypothesis that c-jun may play a role in the reduction of seizure activity.
