Notes: Abstract In this paper we introduce techniques that allow us to define a posteriori error estimators via well-known recovery techniques. These allow us to construct a posteriori error estimators for relatively general problems. Further, we introduce new adaptive procedures that make use of these estimators and, in particular, describe anh-p procedure that is simple to implement and that, as numerical experiments have shown, attains an accelerated rate of convergence expected from theh-p version.

Notes: An a-posteriori error estimator for finite element analysis proposed by Zienkiewicz and Zhu is analysed and shown to be effective and convergent. In addition we analyse wider classes of estimators of which the Zienkiewicz-Zhu estimator is a special case. It is shown that some of these estimators will be asymptotically exact. Numerical evidence is presented supporting the analysis.

Notes: This note reports numerical experiments on the efficiency of simple error estimates derived earlier1 applied to incompressible mixed or related penalty type formulations. The rate of convergence and performance of various mixed elements is compared. Numerical results from a driven cavity and an incompressible elastic problem demonstrate that the T6B1/3D and T6/3C elements give a faster rate of convergence than the T6/1D element. However, in the case of a plane extrusion analysis (stronger singularity), the rate of convergence for the T6B1/3D element drops and is inferior to that of the T6/1D, while the T6/3C element still proves superior to the other two elements.

Notes: The Zienkiewicz-Zhu error estimator is shown to be effective in problems of plate flexure. When used in conjunction with triangular elements and an adaptive mesh generator allowing a prescribed size of elements to be developed, very fast adaptive convergence for results of specified accuracy is achieved.

Notes: The paper presents first a general formulation of the elasto-plastic matrix for evaluating stress increments from those of stresses for any yield surface with an associated flow rule. A new ‘initial stress’ computational process is proposed which is shown (1) to yield more rapid convergence than alternative approaches (2) to permit large load increments without violating the yield criteria and thus simply to establish lower bound solutions. Several solutions showing stress distribution, strain development and growth of plastic enclaves are given both for the von Mises and for Coulomb (Drucker) type yield surfaces. Load reversal and thermoplastic behaviour are dealt with.

Notes: Introduced herein is a generalization of Newmark's time marching integration scheme, called the β-m method. Like the SSpj method (introduced in Parts 1 and 2 of this series), the β-m method provides a gcneral single-step scheme applicable to any set of initial value problems. The method is specialized by specifying the method order m along with rn integration parameters, β0, β1, …, βm-1. For a particular choice of m, the integration parameters provide a subfamily of methods which control accuracy and stability, as well as offering options for explicit or implicit algorithms. For the most part, attention is focused on the application to structural dynamic equations. Most well-known methods (e.g. Newmark, Wilson, Houbolt, etc.) are shown to be special cases within the β-m family. Hence, one computationally efficient and surprisingly simple algorithm unifies old and new methods. Stability and accuracy analyses are presented for method orders m = 2, 3 and 4 to determine optimal parameters for implicit and explicit schemes, along with numerical verification.

Notes: This paper presents a simple extension of the patch test to mixed formulations to provide the necessary and sufficient conditions for convergence. The general algebraic conditions of Babuska and Brezzi are given a simple form and a conceptual application of the patch tests serves to point out the instability of several well known formulations for incompressible problems. The test is also applied to mixed displacement - strain formulations of elasticity, and limiting formulations are noted.

Notes: ‘Dynamic’ or ‘viscous’ relaxation procedures have not gained much popularity in finite element analysis in which the direct (Gaussian elimination) solution dominates. Reasons for this are various - the most important being the rather slow convergence generally achieved for such procedures. However, it is possible to accelerate this quite dramatically and a method of doing so is shown in this paper. With the use of such acceleration and the inherent advantages of greatly reduced storage requirements and simplicity of programming, relaxation procedures promise an exciting possibility for the solution of large two- and three-dimensional problems in both linear and nonlinear ranges.
