Notes: Abstract The dependence of knock-on electron probability on the momenta of muons producing the knock-on electrons in condensed matter has been investigated by using a counter controlled cloud chamber. A search has also been made on the nature of the energy spectrum of the knock-on electrons from muons in the momentum region (0.80±0.05) to (1.70±0.05) Bev/c. It appears from the results of the measurements that there is a very weak dependence of knock-on electron probability on the primary muon momentum in the investigated muon spectral region (i.e. (0.80±0.05) to (1.70±0.05) Bev/c). The angular distributions and hence the energy spectra of the emergent electrons are found to be independent of muon momentum.

Notes: Summary Creep equations have been formulated for the multi-axial state of stress for an orthotropic medium, based on an invariant proposed by Hill for theory of plasticity. Anyone of the numerous creep laws suggested from time to time by different investigators on the basis of experiments can then be used in these equations giving a complete set of equations for the solution of creep problems in orthotropic medium. Two simple applications are also discussed. An example in which principal axes of stress do not coincide with axes of anisotropy tension of a bar is discussed. Another example, that of compression under conditions of plane strain, illustrates variation of stress with time although load is kept constant. It is shown that in this case {ie142-1} relaxes to the final value {ie142-2} after a few times the retardation time.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammmenfassung Die Frage der Torsion eines Stabes aus orthotropem Material wird analysiert.
Notes: Summary The analysis of the torsion problem for a rod of orthotropic material is presented. The analysis is based on Norton's law generalised for a multi-axial state of stress for an orthotropic medium. The components of displacement have been assumed to be similar to those given by the theory of elasticity. The resultant stress τ at the periphery of the rod has been assumed to be a function of θ. An expression giving the twist as a function of the time has also been derived.

Notes: Summary This paper deals with the distrubance due to steady rotation of axisymmetric bodies in a viscous incompressible fluid of infinite conductivity in which the uniform ambient flow field is collinear with the uniform magnetic field. The known results of Sowerby1) for the problem “Couple on a rotating spheroid” in a slow stream in an incompressible viscous fluid are generalized to apply to all ellipsoids of revolution and a special case of the circular disc has also been investigated in detail. The conditions of flow are assumed to be such as to permit the use of Oseen's approximation in the equations of motion. The coefficient of couple has been found to the first order approximation in terms ofR(1−S) orR(S−1) whereR is the Reynolds number andS=H 0 2 /4πρ′W 2 the pressure number which plays an important part. The couple exerted on the body is computed for various values ofS andR.

Notes: Summary In this paper we have studied the problem of the unsteady flow of an electrically conducting incompressible viscous fluid through a circular pipe under the influence of a uniform applied transverse magnetic field when the walls are non-conducting. It has been assumed that the velocity vanishes on the non-conducting walls and initially the fluid is at rest. The velocity field and the induced magnetic field are calculated by an iteration procedure and have been found up to second order terms inM (Hartmann number) which is taken to be small. We have also neglected the term involving β (= 4πμση/ρ) the self inductance of the fluid, which is valid for small values ofM. Since the pressure gradient is not necessarily a constant in unsteady flow, we have assumed it to be an arbitrary function of time. A particular case when the pressure gradient is an exponential function of time has also been investigated in detail. For a constant pressure gradient the curves for the velocity field and the induced magnetic field have been drawn (at different values of Hartmann number and time). It has been found that for small values of time the fluid is accelerated near the centre in contrast to the case of a non-conducting fluid.

Notes: Summary In this paper, two dimensional boundary layer equations for Reiner-Philippoff fluids have been obtained for the two limiting cases when the shear stress parameter is small or large. These equations have been integrated using Karman-Pohlhausen's method in the inlet of a straight channel. Analytical expressions for the inlet length and the boundary layer thickness in both cases have been obtained. The pressure drop has also been obtained from kinetic energy end-correction.
