Summary A two year old red-deer stag gave the first rutting sound (Sprengruf — the sound normally given by the stag before attacking his rival) regularly, in a standing position, first after having driven the hind, and the same is true later with his roar. The relationship between sound production and the preceeding movement, with its connected increase in respiratory rate furnish edvidence to the possible evolutionary, origin of the rutting calls.
Abstract:
Résumé Ce n'est qu'après avoir poursuivi le cerf femelle qu'un cerf mâle de deux ans a émis, de façon régulière et à l'arrêt, le premier son propre à la période du rut (sorte de meuglement explosif); de façon identique, il a laissé entendre par la suite la plainte du „brâme”. Que l'émission d'un soit précédée d'un mouvement de locomotion et, partant, d'une respiration plus rapide, semble indiquer que les sons émis au moment du rut ont une origine phylogénétique.

Zusammenfassung Ein zweijähriger Rothirsch hat den ersten Brunftlaut (Sprengruf) zuerst regelmäßig im Stehen abgegeben, nachdem er das Tier getrieben hatte; in gleicher Weise später das Röhren. Der Zusammenhang der Lautäußerung mit vorhergehender Bewegung und damit verbundener gesteigerter Respiration gibt Hinweise auf die mögliche stammesgeschichtliche Entstehung der Brunftlaute.
