Notes: Abstract The effects on spermatogenesis of a series of contiguous non-overlapping Y-chromosome deficiencies were examined using both the light and electron microscope. The deficiencies were constructed by combining elements of different X-Y translocations; they subdivide the Y into seven segments, six of which are required for male fertility (four in the long arm and two in the short arm). Spermatogensis was examined from the primary spermatocyte through to the formation of mature sperm and the earliest departures from normal development identified. Two deficiencies result in the absence of the same structure from the axoneme of the sperm tail-the dynein-containing outer arm extending from the A subtubule of the peripheral doublet; they also result in the absence from primary spermatocyte nuclei of aggregates of tubuli in one case and reticular material in the other. A third deficiency causes the appearance in the primary spermatocyte of the crystals characteristic of X0 males and the irregular distribution during meiosis of nuclear and cytoplasmic elements to the spermatids. The fourth deficiency results in the misalignment of the developing axoneme with the mitochondrial derivatives and is first detectable in the onion nebenkern stage of the spermatid. Finally for two deficiencies the first abnormalties detected were during later stages and comprise a syndrome found in most of the steriles. We attribute this phenotype to the indirect effects of earlier lesions.

Notes: Astaxanthin-rich oil extract from Louisiana crawfish by-product imparted a salmon-red coloration to the flesh and integument of rainbow trout on a diet containing 45 mg astaxanthin/kg feed. Carotenoids deposited in fish flesh were stable (ca 90% retention) in air-packed samples at 1 - 2°C. Oxygen-evacuated and CO2-enriched packaging gave adverse color stability. Lowest pigment levels were in frozen samples, with 53% of the absorbed pigment degraded in 14 days. Visual color scores were consistent with quantitative pigment analyses (r = 0.77). Higher pigment contents were observed in air-packed (1 - 2°C) samples, possibly due to astacene or other breakdown products of astaxanthin. Maximal TBA values were observed in air-packed (1 - 2°C) samples. The effect of tissue enzyme homogenate on fading of trout flesh is discussed.

Notes: [Auszug] The B-cell populations in BALB/c spleen (Figs 1, 2) are resolved into two subsets on the basis of the amount of IgM expressed. The predominant population (labelled I in the diagram), which has relatively little surface IgM, expresses intermediate to high levels of surface IgD and constitutes -60% ...

Notes: [Auszug] All IgM-bearing cells in the spleens of 2-week-old animals express BLA-1 (recognized by rat monoclonal antibody 53-10.1)6, whereas less than half of the IgM-bearing spleen cells in adults carry this antigen (Fig. 2). BLA-1 therefore appears to be absent from the late-developing more 'mature' ...

Notes: [Auszug] Mouse monoclonal anti-dansyl antibodies with the same antigen-binding sites but different heavy chain constant regions were generated. The extent of segmental flexibility in times of nanoseconds and the capacity to fix complement were greatest for IgG2b, intermediate for IgG2a, and least for IgG1 ...

Notes: The rates of polymerisation of styrene and vinyl acetate under the influence of preirradiated polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) film are almost indistinguishable from the corresponding uncatalysed rates of these monomers. This observation is consistent with the calculated rate of bimolecular decay of radicals in a polymer film swollen with monomer. The radicals disappear rapidly even if the monomer is distilled slowly on to the film. If the monomer is added in the form of an aqueous emulsion the rates of the diffusions of the monomer into the film and of small radicals out of the film are so balanced that a proportion of the radical activity escapes into the emulsion where it initiates a very long-lived emulsion polymerisation.

Notes: The kinetics of the emulsion polymerisation of styrene initiated by previously gammairradiated polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) films have been investigated. The rate of polymerisation was independent of the number of radicals in the film. After an induction period the polymerisation followed a SMITH-EWART Case II mechanism. The ARRHENIUS factors for the propagation rate constant were 8-10 kcal./mole and 107-109 l./mole sec. The average activation energy of the transfer reactions which regulated the degree of polymerisation was 11-13 kcal./mole.

Notes: The validity of turbidimetric titration in the analysis of polymer mixtures was tested using mixtures of known composition. In some cases, which included three out of four mixtures of block or graft copolymers with homopolymers, the method was not even semiquantitative.Electron micrographs of samples of the suspension taken during titration of single polymer solutions show that assumptions of uniform size or regular geometrical shape of the particles are invalid.
