    Notes: Abstract The26Al(n, p)26Mg reaction has been studied using neutron spectra which closely resembled Maxwell-Boltzmann (M.-B.) distributions with thermal energies ofkT=40 ×10−6, 31 and 71 keV and also forE n =270–350 keV. These energies correspond to stellar temperaturesT 9=4.6×10−7, 0.36, 0.82 and 3.1–4.1, whereT 9 is in units of 109 K. The partial cross sections for thep 0-(p 1-)transition are found to equal 26±10(1,850 ±150), 13±6(124±17), 16±13(84±14) and 21±8(72±15) mb for the above neutron spectra, respectively. The astrophysical reaction rate is determined for the combinedp 0- andp 1-transitions to beN A 〈σν〉=(0.324±0.026, 20.5±2.7, 22.6±4.3 and 38.7±11.1) ×106 cm3 mole−1 s−1. The results are compared with previous investigations and with statistical model calculations.

    Notes: Abstract All reaction products in the range from target- and projectile-like to fission-like fragments were measured for the system84Kr+27Al at 5.9 MeV/u beam energy. They are assigned to the various reaction mechanisms on the basis of experimental signatures (energy dissipation, mass and angular distribution). The sum of the measured partial cross sections, including the evaporation residue yield obtained previously, agrees with the total reaction cross section derived from elastic scattering. A small fast-fission component was found, discernible from deep-inelastic reactions by its 1/sin θ angular distribution, and distinguished from compound-nucleus fission by an incomplete mass asymmetry relaxation.

    Notes: Abstract Angular distributions for inelastic scattering, for 1 and 2-nucleon transfer reactions were studied at 18.2 MeV/u beam energy. Owing to sequential decay of excited reaction products the nuclide yield measured at various angles and in different regions of total kinetic energy loss (TKEL) does not represent the yield of primordial nuclides A Z. Monte Carlo calculations were applied in order to reconstruct the primary double-differential cross-sections d2σ/dΩdTKEL for values of TKEL up to 80 MeV. By comparing the probability of inelastic scattering and that of transfer reactions it is found that the former dominates for TKEL〈 10 MeV, whereas the situation is reversed above 20 MeV. No evidence is found for the excitation of giant resonances with significant cross section.

    Description / Table of Contents: Summary The accuracy of astronomical positions at sea is discussed from various points of view: Single or serial observations, number and distribution of position lines, systematical and random errors, possibilities of compensation, and ascertaining of errors increasing with time. The remarks are elucidated by examples of star observations obtained during the “Meteor” cruise of 1937.

Die Ausführungen werden durch Beispiele von 1937 auf „Meteor“ gewonnenen Gestirnsbeobachtungen erläutert.

    Description / Table of Contents: Summary By comparing the course of two rays of light — measurement over a known distance with vertical base lines at the mark and at the observer — and by determining the height at which a ray of light passes a number of staffs, the refraction near water surfaces was investigated. The appertaining formulae reveal the sensitivity to variations of the temperature gradients of the measurable results at different heights. Hence, it is practically impossible to compute the course of a ray of light with precision from temperature measurements; one may, however, be able to obtain an insight into the thermical structure of the lowest atmospheric layers by optical measurements.
    Abstract: Résumé En comparant le cours de deux rayons lumineux — mesure de la distance à l'aide des lignes verticales de base auprès de l'observateur et de la marque — et en observant la hauteur dans laquelle un rayon lumineux passe plusieurs bâtons géometriques on a étudié la réfraction immédiatement au-dessus de surfaces d'eau. Les formules correspondantes montrent qu'en divers hauteurs les résultats mensurables dépendent très sensiblement des variations du gradient de la température. Pour cela il n'est pas possible de dériver avec précision de la température le cours d'un rayon lumineux; cependant, les mesures optiques permettent de caractériser la structure thermique des couches inférieures de l'atmosphère.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Die Strahlenbrechung über Wasseroberflächen wurde durch Vergleich des Verlaufs zweier Lichtstrahlen — Entfernungsmessung mit vertikaler Basis am Ziel und am Beobachter — und durch Beobachtung der Höhe, in der ein Lichtstrahl verschiedene Meßlatten passiert, untersucht. Die einschlägigen Formeln zeigen die Empfindlichkeit der meßbaren Ergebnisse gegen Änderungen der Temperaturgradienten in verschiedener Höhe. Es ist daher praktisch nicht möglich, aus Temperaturmessungen den Verlauf des Lichtstrahls genau zu berechnen, wohl aber ergibt sich umgekehrt durch die optischen Messungen ein Einblick in den thermischen Aufbau der unteren Atmosphärenschichten.
