The Behaviour of Copper Anodes in Cyanide BathsCopper can be mechanically passivated in solutions of Sodium Cyanide and Sodium Copper Cyanide by mens of anodic treatment. The resultant phenomena obey the time laws of covering passivity of Müller-Machu. Coincident with a rapid drop in current potential and at the time of the commencement of passivity, the surface of the electrode becomes completely covered with a greenish layer of copper cyanide. The rapid drop in current potential is also accompanied by a strong rise in the copper potential. The passivating layer is easily soluble in electrolytes. The commencement of passivity is rendered more difficult with an increase in the concentration of NaCN and Na Cu (CN)2, i.e., the solubility of the copper anode is increased. Free NaCN also in-creases the solubility of the anodes, and to a relatively greater extent than does the total concentration of of cyanide. There is no linear relation between the concentration of free NaCN and the specific passivating constant B, the relation is exponential. Thus, a small addition of free NaCN to a bath of pure NaCu(CN)2 has a considerably greater effect on the solubility of the anodes than would be the cse if a greater quantity of NaCN were added to a bath that already contained free NaCN. NaOH and Na2CO3 have practically no influence on the solubility of the anodes. The potentials of the copper anodes in the active and the passive states also manifest the great influence of the total concentration and that of free NaCN on the polarisation of copper.
Notizen:
