Notes: The polarograms of the metal complexes of Ethylenediaminetetraacetic Acid and of 1,2-Diaminocyclohexane-tetraacetic Acid are described. In a mixture, containing the metal complex MYv-4 as well as the uncomplexed cation M+v, it is usually possible to determine the concentration of the latter with high accuracy with the aid of a polarograph. Such measurements have been used for the determination of the ratios of the formation constants of the complexes of two metals M and M′, and from these ratios the individual formation constants of 49 complexes have been obtained. The best values of the formation constants (20°, μ = 0,1) of metal complexes are tabulated.

Notes: A derivative of phenolphtalein, carrying two iminodiacetic acid groups, which enable the substance to bind metal cations, is described. Complex formation with Mg+2, Ca+2, Sr+2, Ba+2 and Zn+2 has been investigated quantitatively and the absorption spectra of the different complexes are given. The new substance, called Phtalein-Complexone, is an excellent indicator for the complexometric titration of alcaline earth metals. A method for the titration of sulfate is also given.

Notes: The determination of thermodynamic acidity constants (dissociation constants) requires the elimination of all salt effects by an extrapolation to zero ionic strength. Laborious curvefitting may be necessary, and the results may be of low accuracy unless an extensive series of data is available. It is shown that the extrapolation can be reduced to a simple extension of a straight line of small slope when suitable experimental data are combined in the proper way. Measurements of spectral absorption and of e.m.f., taken together, will yield thermodynamic acidity constants not obtainable by either method alone. The procedures are illustrated by the determination of the acidity constants for three uncharged acids (p-nitrophenol, 2,4-dinitrophenol and 4-chloro-2,6-dinitrophenol) and for three cationic acids (m-nitroanilinium-ion, p-chloranilinium-ion, and N,N-diethyl-p-toluidinium-ion).

Notes: The apparent equilibrium constant of the reaction: \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ {\rm Hg}_{{\rm f1}} + {\rm Hg}^{{\rm + 2}}\,{\!=\!=}\,{\rm Hg}_{\rm 2}^{{\rm + 2}} $$\end{document} has been determined in the temperature range from 0-40° C and in a series of solutions differing in ionic strength, in order to obtain the thermodynamic value of the constant. The result is in excellent agreement with the oxidation potentials of mercury taken from the literature. The values of ΔF, ΔH and ΔS of the above reaction have been evalueated.
