Notizen: We describe an experiment that couples a high-resolution Fourier transform spectrometer (FTS) to a supersonic jet of radicals. A 1-mm-i.d. cylindrical SiC nozzle is resistively heated to 1500 K in order to decompose organic precursors and generate expansions of jet-cooled radicals. We have used this apparatus to pyrolyze alkyl nitrites to make alkoxy and nitric oxide radicals. The residence time of radicals in this hot nozzle is roughly 20 μs RONO→ΔRO+NO. We use the FTS to detect the IR absorption of the product NO (ν0=1876.1 cm−1) at resolutions as fine as 0.005 cm−1 FWHM. We observe the product NO from the pyrolysis of CH3CH2ONO to be rotationally cooled to roughly 50 K. The IR spectra indicate that the optical path length is about 3/4 cm and that the nitrites pyrolyze to produce approximately 1014 NO radicals cm−3 some 9 mm downstream from the nozzle. Our spectrometer is capable of detecting an absorption signal of 0.1% over a bandwidth of 100 cm−1 at 0.005 cm−1 resolution. Depending on the infrared cross section of the radical, this implies that we are able to monitor diatomic radical densities of roughly 5×1012 cm−3 (quantum state)−1. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: We report here on an experiment in which picosecond electron pulses, produced by a compact radiation frequency (rf) electron gun, were used to excite a rectangular waveguide, generating 5 ps pulses of radiation with a bandwidth of ∼200 GHz. The interaction of the electron pulses with the waveguide can be modeled quite simply by performing a harmonic expansion of the pulse train produced by the electron gun and employing Poynting's theorem to compute the power coupled into the modes of the waveguide by each harmonic. The resulting model for the distribution of spectral power yields good agreement with the observed spectrum. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Summary Concomitant application of 5% w/w benzoyl peroxide and 3% w/w erythromycin has previously been shown to prevent the overgrowth, on the skin of acne patients, of crythromycin-resistant coagulase-negative staphylococci, which occurs when the antibiotic is used alone. Two in vivo studies were carried out to assess the ability of the same therapeutic combination to inhibit the growth of pre-existing erythromycin-resistant propionibacteria and to prevent the selection of resistant strains during treatment. A double-blind clinical trial in 37 patients with mild to moderate acne vulgaris showed that the combination brought about a 〉 3 log10 c.f.u. reduction in total propionibacterial numbers/cm2 after 6 weeks therapy (P 〈 0.001, Wilcoxon's matched pairs) and also significantly reduced the number of erythromycin-resistant propionibacteria (P 〈 0.05). In contrast, erythromycin alone reduced the total propionibacterial count by 〈 1.5 log10 c.f.u./cm2 after 6 weeks (P 〈 0.05) and did not affect the number of erythromycin-resistant strains. The combined formulation was significantly more effective at reducing total propionibacterial numbers at 6 (P 〈 0.01, Mann-Whitney) and 12 weeks (P 〈 0.05) than erythromycin alone, although, after 12 weeks, the anti-propionibacterial efficacy of both preparations was less marked. Five patients on combination therapy, and five treated with erythromycin alone, acquired erythromycin-resistant strains de novo at week 6 or week 12. In an open study in 21 acne patients, who each carried 〉 103 c.f.u. erythromycin-resistant propionibacteria/cm2 skin pretreatment, the combination of erythromycin and benzoyl peroxide reduced the total propionibacterial count by 〉 2.5 log10 and the number of erythromycin-resistant strains by a similar amount (P 〈 0.001, Wilcoxon). This was accompanied by highly significant reductions in acne grade and lesion counts (P 〈 0.001). These data suggest that the combination of 5% w/w benzoyl peroxide and 3% w/w erythromycin has greater in vivo antipropionibacterial activity than 3% w/w erythromycin alone, and brings about significant clinical improvement in acne patients with high numbers of erythromycin-resistant propionibacterial strains pretreatment.

Notizen: This paper explains the process of defining, measuring and costing health service outputs (Health Resource Groups – HRGs). It identifies why the introduction of HRGs became necessary and how they were rolled out and became mandatory. The steps followed to achieve national uniformity are explained. Evidence is provided on the extent to which HRGs have been adopted and on the wider roles they may fulfil, such as benchmarking. The possible implications for resource allocation and the power of clinicians are discussed. Finally, attention is turned to the possible consequences of costed HRGs, as a means of achieving detailed financial accountability at operational level and to alternative means of control.

Notizen: 1. The free radical scavenger MDL 73,404 decreases infarct size and improves heart performance after myocardial ischaemia and prolonged reperfusion. In the present study the possibility that changes in receptor density might contribute to the MDL 73,404-induced increase in contractility has been investigated in rats subjected to myocardial ischaemia and 8 days of reperfusion.2. Both in saline- and MDL 73,404-treated rats a significant decrease in β1- and increase in β2-adrenoceptor densities was apparent in the infarcted tissue.3. In non-infarcted septum and right ventricle tissue ischaemia followed by reperfusion tended to increase the density of β2-adrenoceptors which was significantly increased after MDL 73,404 treatment.4. The increased density of β2-receptors in the non-infarcted tissue may contribute to the MDL 73,404 induced improvement of cardiac performance.

Notizen: 〈list xml:id="l1" style="custom"〉1We examined common polymorphisms in the genes encoding the LDL receptor, lipoprotein lipase, apoAI, apoB, apoAIV and cholesteryl ester transfer protein and related them to changes in LDL and HDL cholesterol after high fathigh cholesterol diets.2The only significant association was seen with the apoIV polymorphism, which leads to a structural change in the protein. The response to fat and cholesterol in subjects with at least one apoAIV 2 allele was only 30% of that seen in subjects with the common apoIV 1 allele (P c 0.01), accounting for 67% of the variance in response. This confirms the results of two previous studies in which dietary cholesterol intake was changed.3No associations were seen with polymorphisms of the other five genes examined.

Notizen: The characters in Plato's Socratic Dialogues and the sociocultural beliefs and assumptions they present have a historical dramatic setting which ranges over the last quarter of the fifth century b.c.—the period of activity of the historical Socrates. That this context is to an extent fictional is undeniable; yet this leaves open the question what the dramatic interplay of (mostly) dead politicians, sophists, and other Socratic associates—not forgetting Socrates himself—signifies for the overall meaning and purpose of individual Dialogues. Are we to assume, with a recent study, that Plato is entirely concerned with his contemporary world and is, as it were, borrowing his characters from the fifth century, or does the fiction reveal something of his real involvement in the values and debates of the recent past? The aim of this paper is to argue that a detailed study of the characterization and dramatic structure of one particular Dialogue, Laches, strongly suggests that Plato is using a perceived tension between past and present to generate not only a philosophical argument but also a commentary on the cultural and political world of late fifth-century Athens and in particular Socrates’ position within it.
