Notes: In Laue experiments at the SRS Daresbury, Image Plates were used to determine the crystal structure of an olivine single-crystal, (Mg90Fe10)2SiO4. The exposure time was 50 ms. For the complete data set, five different φ settings were recorded within 20 min. This is the first time that Image Plates have been successfully used for crystal structure analysis of minerals or small crystals.

Notes: Profile and Bragg R values are discussed with respect to different versions of the Rietveld program. The R values calculated from an exemplary neutron diffraction pattern are compared. Results obtained by a modified treatment of background and by a simplified method to decompose an observed pattern into Bragg intensities are presented.

Notes: The time- and position-resolving scintillation detector JULIOS was used for diffraction experiments in a pulsed neutron beam at the ISIS spallation source at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. Angle-dispersive time-of-flight measurements with samples positioned in the primary white beam were performed on standard materials and on zinc-containing spinel oxides; cation distributions of these compounds were determined by least-squares intensity refinements. The experimental setup was used for a comparison of results obtained using white-beam diffractometry at a pulsed spallation source and results obtained using conventional diffractometry with monochromatic neutrons at a continuous reactor beam. A gain by a factor of about 50 in intensity in favour of the white-beam technology was obtained when results were extrapolated for an equal time-averaged mean neutron flux. A JULIOS-type diffractometer was designed to take full advantage of the time structure of the ISIS frame.

Notes: Abstract The ospC gene coding for the outer surface protein OspC and the fla gene coding for the flagellin have been investigated in three different Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato strains. These strains (the North American strain B31 and the European strains PKo and PBi) derive from various biological sources (lxodes dammini, human skin and human CSF) and belong to three different B. burgdorferi OspA serotypes and genospecies (OspA serotype 1, B. burgdorferi sensu stricto; OspA serotype 2, group VS461 and OspA serotype 4, B. garinii, respectively). The ospC and fla genes of the respective strains have been amplified by polymerase chain reaction, cloned in pUC8 and sequenced. The fla as well as the ospC genes were different among the three strains investigated. In general the fla genes are more conserved than the ospC genes. The fla genes have the same length of 1008 nucleotides coding for proteins of 336 amino acids, whereas the ospC genes differ in length. The ospC genes of strains B31, PKo and PBi have 630, 636 and 621 nucleotides encoding proteins of 210, 212 and 207 amino acids, respecctively. The ospC genes exhibit sequence identities between 70% and 74% among each other, sequence identities of the fla genes are in the range 96–97%. The ospC genes could be expressed in Escherichia coli to obtain proteins with and without leader peptides. The expression of the fla gene and an internal gene fragment resulted in the complete flagellin protein and a truncated protein (amino acids 129–251). The different ospC and fla gene products were immunoreactive with monoclonal antibodies and human sera and, thus, enlarge the spectrum of recombinant antigens to improve antibody detection in patients with Lyme borreliosis.

Notes: Abstract We report on first experiments to investigate the electronic structure in the normal spinels ZnAl2O4 and ZnFe2O4 and in the inverse spinels Zn2SnO4 and Zn2TiO4 using the high-resolution67Zn-Mössbauer spectroscopy. The electric field gradient for67Zn at the B (octahedral) site in ZnAl2O4 is negative, whereas the A (tetrahedral) site remains essentially cubic, however, with a more positive center shift. ZnFe2O4 orders antiferromagnetically at ≈10K. Due to superexchange a magnetic field is observed at67Zn. In the inverse spinels short range order leads to only few (Zn,Sn) and (Zn,Ti) configurations at the octahedral sites. The s-electron densities at the67Zn sites are distinct and cover a surprisingly broad range for Zn2TiO4. This strongly suggests that d-electrons of Ti play an essential role in the chemical bond of this compound.

Notes: Abstract Using67Zn Mössbauer absorption and emission spectroscopy, we have investigated the electronic structure at the A and B sites in the normal spinels (Zn)[Al2]O4, (Zn)[Fe2]O4 and (Zn)[Ga2]O4. Within each system, the center shift Sc at the A site is more positive. In all systems investigated, the electric field gradientV u at the B site is negative. The values for SC andV U scale with oxygen nearest-neighbour distance to Zn. In the Fe spinel, a transferred magnetic hyperfine field is observed at the Zn site below the antiferromagnetic ordering temperatureT N=10 K. For a more detailed discussion of the chemical bond, we have performed ab initio Hartree-Fock cluster calculations for the Al and Fe spinels. Our experimental and theoretical results show that all hyperfine parameters are essentially determined by covalency effects. Our data on the Ga spinel raise the question of a partially inverse structure.
